What was political about this year's show? Unless you think Michelle Obama being there is a political statement. No I donβt mind her being there. Someone in the opening performance was holding a paper with a political headline. The whole thing is political. Last year women complain not enough women won, this year a bunch of women won. Politics.

Jennifer Lopez was definitely the most entertaining performance of the night. Didn't feel like a tribute though.

Well, there's no denying the backlash last year played a huge part in the Grammies trying to be extra nice to women. I think we got 23 main female performers and 7 male this year. And all the tributes were about women or done by women. They really made an effort to avoid another backlash.

To be fair - three males who made sense for the show were invited but didn't want to perform (Drake, Gambino, Kendrick). If they had, it would have tipped the balance.
In terms of nominees who made sense as performers, the only cases where there conceivably could have been a "deliberate diversity" component were not inviting Luke Combs (who was contextually the most successful of the Best New Artist nominees, plus they really could have used a true country radio hitmaker) and Greta Van Fleet (BNA nominee, multi-time rock nominee, and one of the only "big" mainstream rock acts around right now). But even those have caveats - if you dive deeper into the BNA pool, you also have to think about inviting the female Bebe Rexha. Plus, despite its success, Greta Van Fleet has received tepid reviews -- and been inconsistent in its previous TV performances.
I guess you could say there was also an absence of the bluesy, instrument-driven jam they sometimes have (and those tend to skew male), but I think that's in part due to a (likely inaccurate) concern that modern TV/awards viewers aren't as into those performances. Because there are definitely talented FEMALE guitarists and drummers that they could have included in such a segment.

Yeah, but even if they included Drake, Gambino and Kendrick it'd still seem off. The night had 18 performances, 14 of them were by or led by women, 4 by men.
On a side note, I wonder if they made a conscious effort to give screen time to all those acts the general public is still not aware of or if it's simply that all the big names turned down the offer. Chloe x Halle don't even get one million monthly streams on Spotify.

What is this ridiculous mess about Grande and Mac Miller's parents? She loves to be messy.

What is this ridiculous mess about Grande and Mac Miller's parents? She loves to be messy. It's late and done. She spoke her opinion and thought Mac should've won Best Rap Album, and some of her fans thought it was a waste flying his parents out to watch thier deceased son lose.
