I buy a few CDs a year from artists that I really like but I never buy them from Best Buy though. All my CD shopping is done at Target (usually for the Target exclusives). But with Target also planning to stop the sale of CDs, I guess no more Target exclusives? It’s all gonna be Spotify or Apple exclusives from now on. I do hope Target at least keeps one small section of CDs for new releases. I wouldn't be surprised if they continue to stock "Target exclusive" CDs, which would obviously be a much smaller footprint than a whole section of CDs and allow them to continue their relationships with the labels.

Barnes & Nobles sells cds. Usually at higher prices than Target/Best Buy/Walmart... Two Best Bys here, and one no longer sells CDs (still has some vinyl). The other one does still have its music section. We'll see how long it lasts.

CD sales overtook cassettes in 1991. I remember in 1994 some people were still buying cassettes. While most stores were already reducing their cassette inventories, it was either late 94 or early 95 when at least one major music retailer (Sam Goody) removed cassettes from stores entirely.
Physical music sales are WAY down, while overall industry revenue is picking back up due to paid/subscription streaming. CDs aren't going to last much longer in my opinion. When big retailers start to remove a format, it's a big red flag if history has anything to say about it.
Nostalgia is always toying with bringing back things like cassettes, etc, but obviously it's not a going to become a substantial format again. There's always a market for nostalgia, but it's only that, nostalgia. Vinyl is an anomaly in my opinion because it's the OG of modern recorded music that has been around since the mid-century - unique in sound and experience. Vinyl is like the anti-mp3 for many people (including myself) who enjoy the warm & fuzzy sound and the process of playing them. I don't own a ton of vinyl relative to CDs or mp3s, but I continue to slowly expand my vinyl collection, new and used. Mostly just for fun, not as a main listening format.
We still have people who grew up with the non-streaming formats, so of course they're not obsolete yet. But looking forward, as they/we die off, people aren't going to care about these objects that aren't anywhere near as convenient as the thousands of songs we have in our clouds or on our phones, let alone on streaming services, etc. It just doesn't make good, common sense to me to believe today's and tomorrow's youth are going to bring back inconvenience on a large scale.
I personally believe we'll see a streaming-only industry in the not-too-distant future (save for some relatively limited nostalgia formats). Not sure exactly how long it will be, but all the signs I see are pointing in that direction.

Who remembers the cd longbox? tedium.co/2018/02/06/compact-disc-longbox-history/Ban The Boxby Ernie Smith 06 Feb 2018 The defining debate of the early compact disc era centered around the longbox, a wasteful form of packaging pushed by retailers and paper manufacturers. Today in Tedium: Thirty years ago, the record industry decided it didn’t want to be the record industry anymore. It wanted to be the CD industry, with maybe some cassettes on the side. It was getting rid of all that vinyl! This situation, oddly enough, may just repeat in 2018—except, this time, not by choice. Best Buy is about to throw out its record racks entirely; Target is making the idea of selling physical CDs less financially advantageous for record labels. It’s a move that’s likely to have a big impact on the industry—and also likely to create some awkward situations at retail, just like dropping all that vinyl did in 1988. Today’s Tedium ponders one of those awkward situations—the longbox, a dumb solution to a dumb problem...

Who remembers the cd longbox? I saw a few around 1992 or 1993 for several Madonna, Miami Sound Machine, and Prince CDs at Musicland. It was super random. I didn't know all the history and background info of it.

I'm not ready for the end of the physical albums. They literally give me life, I hope they'll keep releasing for like 20 years. Or until I die lol

seriously physical sales are so dead. it was very expected. many previous physical generation moved to digital, then new generation don't even bother to buy digital.
what the label/artist need to do is make special versions like taylor did, sell it as exclusive/limited item.

But not everyone will be able to actually sell an item like that. Taylor has built up a brand and a loyal audience over a decade. I could see it working for some but not for most.

They have been charging $16.99 lately for that special edition of Witness. I tend to spend a lot on clothes, shoes, and food, but I just cannot justify spending that much. $11.99 to $12.99 would be okay though.

Agree! "Dance With The Devil" in particular. It's better than like 2-3 pieces of garbage you can find in the standard edition.

I've actually thought about jumping harder on the vinyl trend. It doesn't degrade like cassettes and CDs do and I do have a record player

I can't imagine Target completely dropping their "Exclusive" line. If anything, it will just be 1 endcap with ~20 releases on it. And they will get rid of the rest of the aisles. My store now is already just 1 aisle and the new release end cap.
There is STILL a market for CDs, as many of us said, I mean with the right artist/exclusive, you can move units. Taylor Swift did just this.
Labels want to start charging $16.99 for deluxe cds, then they need to make it an experience again. Throw in a poster, give a special bonus track, include contests, etc. The magazines for tAylor, while not my cup of tea, was still smart. Especially since they did TWO magazines and many fans bought BOTH which is TWO albums.

Physical CDs I can understand going away. I haven't brought much CDs within the last year besides Taylor's album. I can't see Digital Download Stores like iTunes,Google Play and Amazon MP3 disappearing at all. iTunes still has exclusive remixes for some artists and exclusive tracks that premiere on iTunes that you won't find in other Digital Download Stores. Music Streaming is the future but there will always be digital downloads Stores as not all artist keep their music on streaming services for fans to listen to.

The last CD I bought is Adele's 25. Here in the Philippines, the CD as a mass-consumed product is essentially dead. So many record stores in malls have closed down in the last few years and the few ones surviving have few CDs/DVDs in their shelves with karaokes, speakers and headphones as their main merchandise now. And actually a lot of the record labels have either closed shop or already stopped manufacturing new CDs here. Taylor's reputation was not sold here on a bigger scale but only limited copies that were imported from the US so it was very expensive. The local releases y still have CDs but mostly sold at the artist mall shows, concerts and gigs only with autograph sessions.I think CD will still be part of an artist merchandise but mainly for the superfans only so they can get the CD signed as memorabilia
I'm sad the medium is dying but you have to move forward. I migrated to Spotify Premium just cheaper so definitely more practical. But I do sometimes check out an online seller of USED CDs for old titles as collector's item.

I've actually always said that if labels weren't so greedy as to charge up to $17-18 dollar for a CD, the sales decline wouldn't look so bad. Sure it would still exist, but it could be slower?
The price for a standard edition should max out at $8 and $11 for a deluxe. They haven't made the physical market appealing at all.

The price for a standard edition should max out at $8 and $11 for a deluxe. They haven't made the physical market appealing at all. The industry is responsible for its own funeral in a lot of ways. - hiking up CD prices in the late '90s/early '00s, then stuffing those CDs with a bunch of filler just b/c they had the space for it - dwindling focus on artist development, which gives the artists little chance to build up a unique identity; lack of distinguishing factors between artists/songs in turn make casual music listeners less inclined to find or care about supporting new faves - spending the better part of a decade fighting Napster and torrenting, instead of immediately recognizing the benefits of easy access and turning it into a profitable endeavor from the get-go (people don't mind paying reasonable prices for convenience) - letting Spotify start its pricing at $10 a month, which a) emphasized the perception that music is/should be cheap to the public, when it's really not; b) basically left no room for discounts or lowered rates later as an incentive to attract more consumers; and c) made it difficult if not impossible to fairly divide the pie so that everyone involved in the royalty system (artists, writers, sometimes producers) could see reasonable returns for their efforts It's like the men in suits went out of their way to devalue the perception of their own product as much as possible, then wonder why fewer and fewer people want to keep paying a premium price for it.

Here in my country 90s and early 00s cassettes dominated over CDs because it is cheaper ($2-$3) and CDs were mostly for the affluent then tapes died in the mid 00s and CDs got a little cheaper but not as cheap as cassettes were back in the day
One thing I will miss with physical media is the packaging

I think $10 is fine for a new cd, but i simply don't care enough about anybody anymore to actually invest $10 in them. Plus I don't have a cd player in my car, I wouldn't even do it in the first place.
Vinyl does attract me, tho. When I buy my own place and make the perfect man cave, I'll save some space for a turntable for sure.

I'd love to buy CD's if I could find them anywhere. Literally no where around downtown Winnipeg sells them. When I do get to a place like Walmart the selection is abysmal. Even amazon.ca sells out of a new release on the first day and often they are backordered for months. Vinyl is nice but is often more expensive than CD's. I don't like Spotify as I prefer to not rent my music. I love the experience of buying physical copies of music. Thankfully I've been stocking up on all my favorite CD's the past few years so when and if physical sales go away I'll still have that at least. I guess I'll go kicking and screaming against streaming until I am forced to use it...
