Beat me to it, so I'll add early Kesha, Chris Brown, and the lead singer of Rascal Flatts. Fixed :)

*drumroll*

Ellie Goulding Melanie Martinez Miranda Lambert
I would say Selena Gomez, but I think you have to actually have some kind of vocal talent for there to be an issue of tone

I appreciate everyone's participation! I was confused to see selections such as Eminem, Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj. Perhaps I should have more concretely specified singers? It was in the title and description but...

Agree about Adam Levine's falsetto. It's really grating.

I love these ladies so much, but Jennifer Hudson and MJB can put me on edge at times. Sometimes it's just too much.

Madonna the last decade. I canāt think of another act who I used to enjoy whose newer material I canāt even stand to listen to just because of their vocals.

Demi Lovato is like two different singers to me. When she's belting and over-emoting I CANNOT. I can't stand her on Sorry Not Sorry either. That chorus is a killer in the worst way. But on breezy upbeat songs like No Promises, Instruction and Cool for the Summer... she's great. I always want to like her, but most of the time she's trying way too hard or something. It's grating.

One of my most favorite artists is Etta James. Her earlier work is just incredible to me (āAnythinf To Say Youāre Mine š). However I literally cannot listen to her later music because I hate how her tone changed with age. Same as Aretha actually. She sounds like a ghoul now.

Bob Dylan (mentioned before), Janis Joplin, Axl Rose, Kurt Cobain, and both AC/DC singers (Bon Scott and Brian Johnson) all had or have often harsh, unpleasant tones, but in their cases it was probably by design and a deliberate hallmark of their "sounds" and styles. I actually like those harsh tones, in the proper context.

Madonnaās tone has drastically changed. Managed to listen to Borderline and Living for Love back to back and it doesnāt even sound like the same person. Granted, these were recorded decades apart but thereās not even a semblance of people the same person who recorded them.

The number one offender is Asaf Avidan. Literally, the only singer I have had to stop playing because his voice was so horrible and grating.
And also RaeLynn.

Madonnaās tone has drastically changed. Managed to listen to Borderline and Living for Love back to back and it doesnāt even sound like the same person. Granted, these were recorded decades apart but thereās not even a semblance of people the same person who recorded them. I feel like her tone was really nice starting with True Blue and all throughout the 90s. Her vocal ability peaked with Evita, but her tone on I'm Breathless/Erotica/Bedtime Stories is everything. I liked her tone on Music/American Life/COADF but there was a lot of effects intermixed and still not comparable to the late 80s and 90s. Seems like she started to try and recapture her youthful 80s vocals starting with Hard Candy and it's been very hit or miss for me. It's often hard to tell if the heavy processing is intentional for a sound/style or if it's because she lost confidence in her ability to just sing. One thing is true of everyone - tone changes over time. Sometimes it can age well, sometimes not, but it's always going to be different. I think her best bet would be to get her vocals back on track with some coaching and do an introspective album along the lines of American Life, but without all the vocal efx. She can still sound really pretty when she's not trying to sound like her 27 year old self.

I think Brandy Nās voice is straight up WEIRD. Never got the W. Houston comparisons.
Paula Abdul has one of the worst tones of all time.
