This is honestly incredibly stupid, the charts are no longer a true representation of what’s popular. At least recurrence doesn’t change a song’s position... and u can still see recurrent charts... Explain why streaming exists. Why does streaming exist? Because people were pirating songs and spotify’s founders argued that labels should put artists’ music on Spotify so they get payed a fraction of a penny (which adds up over millions of streams) per stream instead of 0 Is streaming a true representation of what’s popular? Yes, and it is by far the most accurate, especially considering non-programmed streams. Radio is manipulated by payola to a great extent and people do not get to directly choose what they are listening to. Sales are better, but there is no way of measuring if someone who buys a song listens to it once or 100 times. Streaming accurately portrays what people are seeking out to listen to. I really don’t understand why so many people say that streaming has “ruined music”. If you think that your favorite genre of music is underrepresented with streaming services, then stream it.

So good to see "Finesse" at #2, even if the gap is still so substantial. At this point, it seems likely that "LOVE." and "Him & I" will not crack the top 10. Wonder how well "How Long" fares. Gotta say, I don't care much for that one, give the Boyz II Men collab some attention, would be great seeing them back in the chart.
And seriously lol, is the new 50 Shades song just not gonna be a hit then? It's by no means a remarkable one, but it's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than Zayn and Taylor's.

On the streaming thing, sure, it seems to be a good way to measure what is popular by simply # of streams however,
I don't agree that sales isn't as good because you can't measure the #times listened. Sales means you give up money to commit to a song or an album, in streaming, depending on your payment plan, you may not have to.
Streaming has a demographics issue, it is heavily skewed towards the younger crowd, that has enough time in their day to stream the same songs over and over again.
So quick example, what is more popular?
A new Migos song that is streamed 200 times in a week by a single 17 year old, with lots of time on their hands or songs off the new Justin Timberlake album bought at Target by a 25 year old for 12 dollars?
Soundscan factors out the possibility that a person with a lot of money can buy 200 copies of a JT album and have it count as 200 sales but does Spotify factor out that possibility with streaming?

Regardless of quality, of course a Swift/Zayn duet was going to blow up bigger than a Rita Ora track.

Glad "Shape of You" is overcoming finding continued success by following Billboard's sick and twisted games fair and smart rules that truly embody the concept of the Hot 100 being “hot.” Fixed it for you. Are you insinuating that the USA doesn't have a chart for song popularity? Only a chart for song "hotness"? That seems like a huge oversight. Seems like having a song popularity chart would be really useful and interesting.

Soundscan factors out the possibility that a person with a lot of money can buy 200 copies of a JT album and have it count as 200 sales but does Spotify factor out that possibility with streaming? That's why a single sale/download counts for like 200 streams. Would fix this issue if smartphones cached people's listening habits and sent the data to Nielson. Then we could ignore the sale/download itself and just count how many times the song was listened to like we do with streaming and radio. But in reality, sales will become irrelevant before anything like that is actually done. A stream also counts for more than a radio impression. Big problem that seems easy to fix. Billboard is so slow in adjusting these things that I think nearly everybody will move to streaming before they get around to fixing it.

Looking at Spotify's data, I would guess that at least in regard of streaming, the entire world is just about as slow as the US in term of turnover. And the only reason the UK charts have faster turnover at the moment is because of the ACR rules applied last year (where the streaming ratio is doubled after 10 weeks on the chart and 3 consecutive weeks of decline). Reading this abomination makes me so proud to be an American. Lmao.

On the streaming thing, sure, it seems to be a good way to measure what is popular by simply # of streams however, I don't agree that sales isn't as good because you can't measure the #times listened. If I'm not mistaken, it's just as possible to play songs over and over again through technologies other than streaming, and some older adults have just as much time on their hands to do so as say a 17 year old. Are you arguing that sales should count more than they do now? If it were weighed too much to that side, wouldn't that be unfairly skewed to an older, more affluent population. I believe this has been brought up many times before, but the fact that one download sale already counts for so much more than one stream more than makes up for the inability to measure the # of times a download sale is listened to, in addition to it taking into account the much higher revenue it generates. Good point though with streaming that there should be a mechanism in place to catch people who mass stream a song just to increase its chart points, although I wouldn't imagine too many people (at least those who have some idea what the formula is) would do that, as you would have to stream the song over 100 times to equal one sale. It seems like just buying 5 copies would be the far more efficient thing to do (assuming they have the money lol), but as you mention Soundscan screens out mass purchases of music. I wonder how many times a person can buy something more than once from the same account before Soundscan screens it out?

Aside from 50 Shades hype, I Don't Wanna Live Forever has that Taylor Swift's 1989's success glow so it was really going to do well. I like For You (and also Hailee Steinfeld's Capital Letters from the same movie) but that sound is not the type that does well on Spotify US right now. And if you don't click with Spotify, chances of charting high on HOT 100 is slim. Best shot is airplay but it's not doing well there as well
Poor Rita Ora. I initially thought she would never really get a big hit in the US but I remember she has one top 10 already with Iggy Azalea's Black Widow lol
