No idea what's up with the Tuesday airdate or why they're shifting the show back nearly 6 weeks. Very bizarre. :|

This is weird, especially the move to a weekday. But then I also have this pipe dream that this would lead to an eventual push for the Grammys to move to November (i.e. cut down on the ridiculously long period b/t voting deadline and when awards are handed out). So I really hope this works out for the AMAs.

I'd love for the Grammys to shorten the voting period, but personally I'd prefer they extend the eligibility through October or so and have the awards in January or something. Then it would feel like it was about the actual year in music that just ended.

To go further than your thoughts, if the Oscars can manage to find a way to have calendar year eligibility, I do not get why the Grammy's cannot do it also.

To go further than your thoughts, if the Oscars can manage to find a way to have calendar year eligibility, I do not get why the Grammy's cannot do it also. In a general sense sure, but there are two reasons: 1.The Grammys have a lot more eligible product and categories (and voters), so the process will take longer. 2. The Grammys don't want to compete with the Oscars, and the Oscars kind of mark the ends of awards season, so the Grammys want to air before the Oscars.

The AMA's are a little over a month away and there's no word on any nominations or performances yet?
Also, I don't like how they are now airing early October. I like it better when the music award shows are spaced 3 months apart (February-Grammys, May-BBMAs, August-VMAs, November-AMAs).

Maybe since they'pushed moved up the date over a month, they wanted to give as much time for the eligibility period and wait until the last possible moment for nominations to be compiled? Noms should be coming soon, though, because they just announced today that Tracee Ellis Ross is returning as host. www.theamas.com/2018/09/tracee-ellis-ross-returns-as-host-for-the-2018-amas/

I'm sure a lot of it comes down to logistics and artist availability to make it all worthwhile... or happen at all. As we know, awards shows are not doing well... so maybe they were able to put together a better and/or more affordable show in October this year. And I'm sure they cut some costs by moving it to a weekday, too.

There are a few things off with these nominations IMO. - No nominations for NTLTC (I think the album missed the eligibility period cutoff, but the song definitely didn't) - Cardi, Drake, and Post Malone being able to 'double up' in genre categories (I already knew this was allowed but I still don't like it) - No nominations for Love Lies - I wasn't expecting much but I thought it would at least be a lock for soul/r&b song. But they nominated a less successful Khalid song instead...v. strange. - on that note, how the hyuck is Khalid a 'new artist' nominee in 2018??? But like Wave. said...can't really take it seriously anyway. Just add it to the pile of shows where I'm only checking for the performances.

AMA is compiled by chart data, is it not? I do wish they had 4 nominees per category, though. I kind of like that they're not 5 like everyone else and make the nomination a bit more "special" but 3 just seems too little. I would llike a compromise between 3 and 5 and do 4 -- just to potentially diversify the nomination pool just a bit.

anyone saying the nominations are ''rigged'' or off is ridiculous... The Billboard Awards, like the AMAS are based on chart stats and radio play !! the AMA's eligibility period was from November to August.. Cardi/Taylor/Camilla clearly had bigger success in that time period than Ariana.. that's pretty obvious.

Nominations are what I expected but how was Ariana not nominated for any of the major awards? My expectations are now low this year.

The nominations and winners are always shit anyway. People only tune in for the performances but the AMA's should be ashamed of themselves with the Ariana snub.

The Billboard Awards, like the AMAS are based on chart stats and radio play !! the AMA's eligibility period was from November to August.. Cardi/Taylor/Camilla clearly had bigger success in that time period than Ariana.. that's pretty obvious. Complaining about perceived sunbs is not the same as saying 'rigged' and as far as I can tell no one has said or implied anything was outright rigged. The AMA nomination criteria is semi-opaque. The AMA website only says that "American Music Awards nominees are based on key fan interactions as reflected in Billboard Magazine and on Billboard.com, including album and digital song sales, radio airplay, streaming, social activity and touring." So we know it's stats based, but it isn't clear what 'formula' is used to balance sales against airplay against social media mentions (I would presume social media only factors into the artist categories and not the song/album ones, but again this is a conclusion I have to reach on my own b/c the website doesn't clarify). I had to hunt just to find what the eligibility period was (September 15, 2017 to August 2, 2017) and literally not until today's announcement of nominees could that answer be found on the AMA website or in any official press release. I had to find it on some other site that was advertising sales to the show. I also agree with others that 3 nominees is just too few. I get that it's an attempt to make the award feel more prestigious by having fewer nominees, but I'm not even sure that worked back when the winners weren't determined by fan vote; it certainly doesn't do anything to boost cred now.

If they want to nominate Cardi, Migos or Drake in rap/hip-hop + general that fine, but it still seems weird to be nominating all these rap/hip-hop artists in pop/rock categories. Also how did Rihanna get nominated for Soul/R&B? Was she really nominated there just for releasing Lemon? I'd think other artists would have something more suitable and successful for that category? I'm surprised Dua Lipa didn't get any nominations in any of the pop/rock categories.

Also, a few more things that I've noticed about the nominees:
- How the hell is Drake and Cardi B nominated for both Favorite Artist Pop/Rock and Favorite Artist Hip Hop/Rap. Put them in their correct genre and open up two other spots. Also, Migos are the least pop/rock out of all three of them...
- Why is there a "Favorite Artist R&B/Soul" but then a "Favorite Female Artist R&B/Soul"? The first one should be changed to just favorite male since it's only men nominated. Or just have one Favorite Artist R&B/Soul with both male and female nominees. And why is Rihanna nominated? I love her but the only thing she had out this year was Lemon which didn't really do much
-What is Favorite Aritst Contemporary? Like favorite AC Artist? That just seems like a very random category to get Shawn and Ed more nominations.
- I really wish the AMAs expanded nominations to 4 or 5 per category. I agree with everyone else that 3 is way too few.
All I know is that the performances better be on point this year.

"Favorite Artist R&B Soul" is supposed to be "male" and Favorite Artist Contemporary is indeed Adult Contemporary. If back-catalog sales and streams are factored into artist categories Rihanna's presence is understandable. And if social media factors in, 'WHERE IS R9???' has probably generated enough social media mentions for her to be nominated on that alone, lol. Female r&b is still very thin at the moment - Beyonce didn't release anything as a solo artist this time around, and Normani only has one song - so it's easy for Rihanna to slide in. Still seems odd, though.

Considering how last year's show was the Kelly Clarkson & P!nk Show, I'm kind of shocked that they only gave P!nk one nomination and Kelly zero.

Favorite Album Rap/Hip-HopDrake Lil Uzi Vert
Post Malone This doesn't seem right considering the trio of Post, Drake, and Cardi are ruling the other Rap/Hip-Hop categories.
