Oslin will be featured (I also happen to be a huge fan of her)! There'll be plenty of the greats featured plus quite a few surprises along the way. Looking at the calendar I think I'm going to hold off one more week before kicking this off so expect reveals to start sometime next Sunday or Monday. Looking forward to this too! Reba, Tanya, KT, Dolly, Kathy...great decade for women! Yes it was!!!

Out of curiosity, how long is this rankdown going to be? Is it like 100 songs? 50 songs?

I really wanted to start the reveals tonight, but daylight savings time has just wiped me out and got me feeling like... On top of that I’m feeling a bit ill so hopefully a good nights rest is all I need.

Barbara Mandrell Our first reveal goes to the first performer and third woman to win the CMA Entertainer of the Year award twice (1980 and 1981)...the one and only Barbara Mandrell! Barbara's career first began in 1969, however she would not see much commercial success until 1978 when she scored her first number one record "Sleeping Single in a Double Bed."
In 1980, Barbara launched her own music-variety TV series on NBC called Barbara Mandrell and the Mandrell Sisters. She was joined by both Louise and Irene as well numerous musical guests that included comedy sketches. The series went on to tape approximately 35 episodes and lasted until 1982.
She is of course best known for her 1981 chart topping hit and our first song of the rankdown "I Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool."

Crystal Gayle Born Brenda Gayle Webb, Crystal Gayle's career first began in 1970 on Decca Records with a song written by her older sister Loretta Lynn called "I've Cried (The Blue Out of My Eyes)." It wouldn't be until 1975, however, when Crystal would find real success after she switched labels to United Artists and teamed up with producer Allen Reynolds. With his encouragement he persuaded her to record what would go on to become her biggest hit..1977's "Don't It Make Your Brown Eyes Blue."
Crystal's success would continue well in the the 1980's beginning with the her number one song in the spring of 1980 and our next song "It's Like We Never Said Goodbye."

Dottie West With a career starting in the 1960s, we celebrate the first female country artist to receive a Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance for her 1964 top 10 hit "Her Comes My Baby."
Prior to my research I did not know that Dottie was present at the March 5th, 1963, concert in Kansas City with Patsy Cline and had asked Patsy to ride back with her; unfortunately Patsy was anxious to get back home and opted to fly instead. How country music history would forever be different had Patsy rode back in the car with Dottie.
The country music world lost Dottie West way too soon as she passed in away in 1991 due to injuries she received in a car accident en route to the Grand Ole Opry.
Dottie would score her first solo #1 hit with our next song "A Lesson in Leavin'" which would also mark a historic moment in country music when a week before it reached the No. 1 spot all Top 5 spots were all held by women.
Shelly West As the daughter of the great Dottie West, Shelly would go on to achieve success of her own in the 1980s. She is best known for her many duets with David Frizzell, including the No. 1 "You're the Reason God Made Oklahoma."
Shelly would score her own solo number one record in 1983 with our next song "José Cuervo."

Terri Gibbs We celebrate the first country music artist (and female!) to win the CMA Horizon Award in 1981...Terri Gibbs!
Terri's debut single and the next song in our rankdown "Somebody's Knockin'" would go on to become a crossover hit and reach the top 10 on the country charts.

Barbara!! Crystal!! Dottie!!! Never new a lot of Shelly's stuff but I do know "José Cuervo" and I love that one! I always wondered what Terri could've sounded like if she was given more hits. I'd have liked to heard what a 90's sound would be like with her.

There's a station here in Austin that plays "José Cuervo" frequently, but honestly I didn't know that was Shelly West singing it this whole time. Now I just feel dumb I also wasn't at all familiar with Terri Gibbs until I started researching artists for the rankdown and knew she had to be included since she's the inaugural winner of the Horizon Award (I still wish they called it that!).

Yeah looked it up she's easily had the weakest career after winning. I find it funny how Terri was the first winner of that award and yet she's probably one of the biggest flops to have won it lol I looked back at the nominees for the Horizon Award in 1981 and she was up against the likes of Rosanne Cash, T.G. Sheppard, David Frizzell and Shelly West (listed together as a duo I believe), and Boxcar Willie of all people. I would’ve went with Rosanne Cash as she went on to be one of the most successful female acts of the 80s. I think the crossover success of her debut single “Somebody’s Knockin’” is what proppeled Terri Gibbs to win the Horizon Award; not only was she nominated for Single of the Year but she sneaked in a nomination for Female Vocalist of the Year as well.

Pretty much all of the other nominees had more success lol
In hindsight Rosanne should've got the award, but good for Terri at least.

I've heard "Jose Cuervo" on the radio several times and every time it takes me about half the song to remember that it's actually a woman singing the song. The first time I heard it, I was deadass confused why they were playing a song where a man got away with singing a line about "kissing all the cowboys."

Charly McClain Charly McCain's career began in the late 70's and she scored her first top ten record in 1978 with"That's What You Do to Me." In 1980, Charly released her third album Women Get Lonely which featured another top ten song "Men" as well as the Top-20 duet with Johnny Rodriguez, "I Hate the Way I Love It."
Charly's success continued well into the mid 1980's with such top five songs as "Sleeping' with the Radio On," "Dancing Your Memory Away," Sentimental Ol' You," and her final No. 1 song "Radio Heart in 1985.
Charly also appeared as a guest star on such shows as Hart to Hart and CHiPS.
It was in 1981 that she would hit No. 1 with her most famous song and our next reveal "Who's Cheatin' Who."

Lacy J. Dalton Once likened to a country equivalent of Bonnie Raitt, Lacy J. Dalton had a string of hits in the early 1980's, including "The Tennessee Waltz," "Hard Times," "Everybody Makes Mistakes," and "Dream Baby (How Long Must I Dream)".
Lacy continued to tour and release albums well into the late 80's. Her final top twenty record of the decade was with "The Heart" in 1989; she would hit the top twenty one more time in early 1990 with "Black Coffee."
Lacy's biggest hit of the early 80's is our next song in the rankdown, "Takin' It Easy."

For the next two reveals I went back and forth on wether to include them or just feature them in a showcase during the rankdown, but I felt they were too influential to not include so at the last minute I made some changes and am going to feature them next.
Hint for the first artist: Her son is a former member of the band BR5-49 and is currently the bass guitarist for Marty Stuart's Fabulous Superlatives.
Hint for the second artist: Her original recording of a song went on to become a major hit for a famous actress/singer that won the Grammy for Song of the Year in the early 90's.

Gail Davies Having influenced such artists as Suzy Bogguss, Kathy Mattea, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Pam Tillis, Gail Davies became the first female producer in country music as she self-produced and arranged her second album The Game which included one top ten record and two top thirty songs.
Gail is married to Gary Scruggs (son of Earl Scruggs and brother of songwriter Randy Scruggs) and whose son Chris Scruggs is currently the bass guitarist for Marty Stuart's Fabulous Superlatives band.
I wasn't quite sure what song to include, however, I chose her No. 4 1980 hit "I'll Be There" as the next song in the rankdown.

Nanci Griffith I couldn't leave out a fellow Austin native, so I'm happy to introduce the great Nanci Griffith as our next artist to spotlight.
Most of you are already familiar with her work; she wrote Kathy Mattea's first hit "Love at the Five and Dime" and co-wrote "Outbound Plane" which Suzy Bogguss took to the top ten in 1991. Nanci also recorded the first version of "From A Distance" for her 1987 album Lone Star State of Mind. That song would later be recorded by Bette Midler and win the 1991 Grammy for Song of the Year.
Although Nanci never had a top ten record of her own, she certainly has had a lasting impact and so I wanted to make sure to showcase her work here. I decided to include her 1987 single "Trouble in the Fields" and have provided links to both the original recording as well as a version she recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra in 1999.

Janie Fricke Initially an in-demand background vocalist for such artists as Dolly Parton, Barbara Mandrell, Crystal Gayle, Conway Twitty and Eddie Rabbit, Janie Fricke went on to be one of the most successful female country artists of the early 1980's. She accumulated a string of hit records over a span of ten years from 1977 and 1987, including "Down to My Last Broken Heart," "Don't Worry 'Bout Me Baby," and "It Ain't Easy Bein' Easy."
For her success Janie was awarded the CMA Female Vocalist of the Year Award in 1982 and 1983.
Our next song to be included is Janie's 1983 No. 1 song "He's a Heartache (Looking for a Place to Happen)."
