“Whiskey, If You Were A Woman” better be nowhere near the bottom 5. I think it definitely makes the top half of the rankdown.

I literally have no. idea. how this'll go; this is a very fantastic collection of songs and knowing that some of these will have to miss the top 10 is just too painful to deal with imo. 1. What will the Top 5/Bottom 5 look like?I really don't know...If I were to guess, I would say that "Whoever's in New England" and at least one of Dolly's solo songs are shoo-ins for the top five. As for other top five contenders, I'd probably pray for something like "Daddy's Hands" and "Why Not Me" to make it up there as well. The only ones I could think of as bottom five contenders are "Could I Have This Dance" and "Lock, Stock, and Teardrops". 2. What will be #1/#40?See above...:kii: 3. Where will the original "80's Ladies" by K.T. Oslin place?I actually think both of K.T.'s songs will place somewhere in the mid-20s. 4. Which 80's Ladies of Country will have the most songs in the top 10?I actually think Dolly is more likely, but Reba wouldn't be much of a surprise to me imo. 5. Which Class of '89 will have the highest ranking song ("Cross My Broken Heart" by Suzy Bogguss; "Never Had It So Good" by Mary Chapin Carpenter; "Dear Me" by Lorrie Morgan)?MCC ftw! I actually discovered that song on Prime Country less than two years ago! It's really cool imo! Hoping it can make the top 10, too! 6. Who is your favorite 80's Lady of Country and why?You mean, I have to choose?!? Well, if I had to choose, I would actually say the Judds. However, I would also consider Kathy, Tanya, Reba, and Dolly as well.
Lookin forward to seeing the results! I'm *this* close to chompin' at the bit btw!

1. What will the Top 5/Bottom 5 look like?Top 5 - Whoever's In New England, 9 To 5, I Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool 2. What will be #1/#40?#1 - Whoever's In New England #40 - Lock, Stock & Teardrops 3. Where will the original "80's Ladies" by K.T. Oslin place#9 4. Which 80's Ladies of Country will have the most songs in the top 10?Dolly Parton 5. Which Class of '89 will have the highest ranking song ("Cross My Broken Heart" by Suzy Bogguss; "Never Had It So Good" by Mary Chapin Carpenter; "Dear Me" by Lorrie Morgan)?Never Had It So Good 6. Who is your favorite 80's Lady of Country and why?Dolly Parton. She's my all-time favourite singer and I could write a whole essay just explaining the reasons. In brief - she is a great singer, she has great of humour, she plays many instruments, she is an amazing songwriter (I love how her songs are so relatable, how she writes about so many different topics (and some of them are (or were at the time when song was released) quite controversial)), how she went from country to pop and then back to country and she did some bluegrass and some gospel albums in between. But the thing that I admire about her the most is how she made something of herself from absolutely nothing - I mean she was born in a one-room shack and now she is a music legend, with a movie career, a bunch of successful businesses and her own charity foundation.

Pre-Reveal Questions:1. What will the Top 5/Bottom 5 look like?
For Top 5: Reba McEntire's "Whoever's In New England", Patty Loveless' "Timber, I'm Falling In Love", Dolly Parton's "9 to 5", Holly Dunn's "Daddy's Hands", and either of The Judds songs. Kathy Mattea, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Suzy Bogguss should be there as well but at least they need to be in the Top 10!!!
For Bottom 5: k.d. lang, Nanci Griffith, Gail Davies, Lacy J. Dalton, and Terri Gibbs. Would love to see Trio in the bottom 5 because I don't care for that song even though they sound great but one of the weakest songs of this group. Anne Murray does not belong in the Bottom 5 like some have suggested.
2. What will be #1/#40?
#1 is easily "Whoever's In New England" though I could see "Timber, I'm Falling In Love" having a minuscule shot at it lol
#40 I think will be one of the songs I think could be Bottom 5
3. Where will the original "80's Ladies" by K.T. Oslin place?
Top 20 but I don't see it being Top 10
4. Which 80's Ladies of Country will have the most songs in the top 10?
Reba, easily!
5. Which Class of '89 will have the highest ranking song ("Cross My Broken Heart" by Suzy Bogguss; "Never Had It So Good" by Mary Chapin Carpenter; "Dear Me" by Lorrie Morgan)?
Suzy Bogguss or more likely Mary Chapin Carpenter.
6. Who is your favorite 80's Lady of Country and why?
this is hard. This is between Patty Loveless, Suzy Bogguss and Reba McEntire for me. I love all three. I think I would put Patty the highest though because the way she can break your heart when she sings is really unlike no other singer. I just love her voice so much.

40. "Lock, Stock and Teardrops" - k.d. lang Total: 439 Average: 33.76 Std Dev: 7.65
Year Released: 1988 Billboard Hot Country Songs Peak: #53
The first song to leave 80's Ladies is k.d. lang's cover of Roger Miller's 1963 hit "Lock, Stock and Teardrops." This song received seven bottom 5 rankings and remained last place throughout the entire time. Unfortunately for Kanenrá:ke and LBTrocks they immediately lose one of their top 20 songs. I was hesitant to initially include this song but once I saw her live performance I was hooked. This song and its album Shadowland was produced by the great Owen Bradley (known for producing Patsy Cline). {Songs Remaining}80’s Ladies 9 to 5 Baby I Lied Can’t Even Get the Blues No More Could I Have This Dance Cross My Broken Heart Daddy’s Hands Dear Me Eighteen Wheels And A Dozen Roses He’s a Heartache (Looking for a Place to Happen) Heaven Only Knows I Fell In Love Again Last Night I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool I’ll Always Come Back I’ll Be There It’s Like We Never Said Goodbye Jose Cuervo A Lesson In Leaving’ Love Me Like You Used To My Arms Stay Open All Night Never Had It So Good Nobody Queen of Hearts Satisfy You Seven Year Ache Some Girls Have All the Luck Somebody’s Knocking’ Takin’ It Easy There’s No Stoppin’ Your Heart Timber, I’m Falling in Love To Know Him Is To Love Him Trouble in the Fields Turn It Loose The Way We Make A Broken Heart Whiskey, If You Were A Woman Who’s Cheatin’ Who Whoever’s in New England Why Not Me Why’d You Come In Here Lookin’ Like That

"Lock, Stock and Teardrops' did NOT deserve to be out first!!!! K.D's vocals are absolutely gorgeous, as is the song.

39. "Trouble In the Fields" - Nanci Griffith Total: 405 Average: 31.15 Std Dev: 9.03
Year Released: 1987 Billboard Hot Country Songs Peak: #57
Our next song to leave is Nanci Griffith's "Trouble in the Fields." rgreen0625 and LBTrocks are the next ones to see their last place song leave while bboat11 and castleoblivion26 also lose a bottom 5. BackwoodsBarbie is the only one to place this song in the top 10; for most of us this song fell somewhere within the 30's. Nanci if of course best known to most of you as the songwriter for such hits as "Love at the Five and Dime" by Kathy Mattea and "Outbound Plane" by Suzy Bogguss. {Songs Remaining}80’s Ladies 9 to 5 Baby I Lied Can’t Even Get the Blues No More Could I Have This Dance Cross My Broken Heart Daddy’s Hands Dear Me Eighteen Wheels And A Dozen Roses He’s a Heartache (Looking for a Place to Happen) Heaven Only Knows I Fell In Love Again Last Night I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool I’ll Always Come Back I’ll Be There It’s Like We Never Said Goodbye Jose Cuervo A Lesson In Leaving’ Love Me Like You Used To My Arms Stay Open All Night Never Had It So Good Nobody Queen of Hearts Satisfy You Seven Year Ache Some Girls Have All the Luck Somebody’s Knocking’ Takin’ It Easy There’s No Stoppin’ Your Heart Timber, I’m Falling in Love To Know Him Is To Love Him Turn It Loose The Way We Make A Broken Heart Whiskey, If You Were A Woman Who’s Cheatin’ Who Whoever’s in New England Why Not Me Why’d You Come In Here Lookin’ Like That

Good! I was hoping "Trouble In The Fields" would be next lol. I was shocked that it escaped the bottom spot.
Nanci Griffith's tone is absolutely atrocious. Tried listening to this one while compiling my list and couldn't do it. I had to turn the volume SO far down and even then I was hella annoyed! So glad to see this out now.

I had TITF lower originally. I agree that the vocal is on the more jarring side and a smoother tone would suit the song better.

38. “Takin’ It Easy” - Lacy J. Dalton Total: 401 Average: 30.84 Std Dev: 7.99
Year Released: 1981 Billboard Hot Country Songs Peak: #2
This song never managed to escape the bottom three as it received multiple bottom 5 rankings. This ended up being Lacy’s highest charting country single at #2, although she would go on to see four more top 10 hits throughout the 1980’s. This song was a discovery for me as I wasn’t all that familiar with Lacy’s discography and I found that it was one of the songs I came back around least to listen to again. {Songs Remaining}80’s Ladies 9 to 5 Baby I Lied Can’t Even Get the Blues No More Could I Have This Dance Cross My Broken Heart Daddy’s Hands Dear Me Eighteen Wheels And A Dozen Roses He’s a Heartache (Looking for a Place to Happen) Heaven Only Knows I Fell In Love Again Last Night I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool I’ll Always Come Back I’ll Be There It’s Like We Never Said Goodbye Jose Cuervo A Lesson In Leaving’ Love Me Like You Used To My Arms Stay Open All Night Never Had It So Good Nobody Queen of Hearts Satisfy You Seven Year Ache Some Girls Have All the Luck Somebody’s Knocking’ There’s No Stoppin’ Your Heart Timber, I’m Falling in Love To Know Him Is To Love Him Turn It Loose The Way We Make A Broken Heart Whiskey, If You Were A Woman Who’s Cheatin’ Who Whoever’s in New England Why Not Me Why’d You Come In Here Lookin’ Like That

37. “Could I Have This Dance” - Anne Murray Total: 382 Average: 29.38 Std Dev: 9.7
Year Released: 1980 Billboard Hot Country Songs Peak: #1 Billboard Adult Contemporary Peak: #3
The song most made famous by the movie Urban Cowboy doesn't manage to escape the bottom 5. Anne didn't see a lot of support from the group and I'm sure a lot of you will be happy to see this one leave. She did manage to receive four top 20 rankings but in the end the six bottom 5 rankings sunk it. {Songs Remaining}80’s Ladies 9 to 5 Baby I Lied Can’t Even Get the Blues No More Cross My Broken Heart Daddy’s Hands Dear Me Eighteen Wheels And A Dozen Roses He’s a Heartache (Looking for a Place to Happen) Heaven Only Knows I Fell In Love Again Last Night I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool I’ll Always Come Back I’ll Be There It’s Like We Never Said Goodbye Jose Cuervo A Lesson In Leaving’ Love Me Like You Used To My Arms Stay Open All Night Never Had It So Good Nobody Queen of Hearts Satisfy You Seven Year Ache Some Girls Have All the Luck Somebody’s Knocking’ There’s No Stoppin’ Your Heart Timber, I’m Falling in Love To Know Him Is To Love Him Turn It Loose The Way We Make A Broken Heart Whiskey, If You Were A Woman Who’s Cheatin’ Who Whoever’s in New England Why Not Me Why’d You Come In Here Lookin’ Like That

Surprised to see it this low, though bottom 10 not so much. Familiarity helped this one for me.

36. “To Know Him Is to Love Him” - Trio Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris Total: 373 Average: 28.69 Std Dev: 12.1 (3rd highest!)
Year Released: 1987 Billboard Hot Country Songs Peak: #1
Not even Dolly could help this one escape the bottom 5 as it received six bottom 5 rankings and two bottom 10 rankings; unfortunately for Glove Slap and bboat11 they lost a top 10. Overall this was the 3rd most polarizing song of the rankdown. The album Trio went on to be widely successful in 1987 and has sold over 4 million copies worldwide. "To Know Him Is to Love Him" was written by Phil Spector and first recorded back in 1958 and has been covered by the likes of Nancy Sinatra and Bobby Vinton. {Songs Remaining}80’s Ladies 9 to 5 Baby I Lied Can’t Even Get the Blues No More Cross My Broken Heart Daddy’s Hands Dear Me Eighteen Wheels And A Dozen Roses He’s a Heartache (Looking for a Place to Happen) Heaven Only Knows I Fell In Love Again Last Night I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool I’ll Always Come Back I’ll Be There It’s Like We Never Said Goodbye Jose Cuervo A Lesson In Leaving’ Love Me Like You Used To My Arms Stay Open All Night Never Had It So Good Nobody Queen of Hearts Satisfy You Seven Year Ache Some Girls Have All the Luck Somebody’s Knocking’ There’s No Stoppin’ Your Heart Timber, I’m Falling in Love Turn It Loose The Way We Make A Broken Heart Whiskey, If You Were A Woman Who’s Cheatin’ Who Whoever’s in New England Why Not Me Why’d You Come In Here Lookin’ Like That

Encore! During the reveals I'm going to include an encore section with one additional song for each 80's Lady of Country that leaves us. Some of the songs featured will be ones that I almost included or were significant hits for the artist.
k.d. lang "Honky Tonk Angels Medley" with Kitty Wells, Loretta Lynn, and Brenda Lee This was the first song I selected for k.d. lang but at the last minute swapped it for “Lock, Stock and Teardrops." This is also from her 1988 album Shadowland and was performed live at the 1988 CMA Awards.
Nanci Griffith "Listen to the Radio" Below is a live performance by Nanci from an Austin City Limits taping in the late 80s. Her voice really matured over the years and you'll probably notice a big difference between this and her earlier work from the early 80s. Also in the video you might catch a glimpse of an up-and-coming country female star.
Lacy J. Dalton "Black Coffee" This is my favorite song by Lacy and was her last top 20 hit in early 1990.
Anne Murray "A Little Good News" This song went on to be a big hit for Anne in 1983 and won her the Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance in 1984. The song would also go on to win the 1984 CMA Single of the Year Award. I think we all could use a little good news today.
Trio "Telling Me Lies" This was my original selection to feature Dolly, Emmylou, and Linda for the rankdown but later switched it to include the first single from their Trio album. This was the album's second single and peaked at #3.

Most of the reveals so far have been totally fine with me. I don't even remember most of the songs... Lol. However, "To Know Him Is To Love Him" is SHOCKING!!!!!!!!! What is so bad about that song??!?! I would like to hear some thoughts here... The melody is beautiful and lullaby-ish, and their harmonies are so soothing.
Now I am really curious to see how "To Know Him Is To Love Him" will finish in the Martina McBride Everlasting rankdown when it comes time for that album... I never pegged that for one that might finish towards the bottom!

I never pegged that for one that might finish towards the bottom! For me, the verse is dreadful. The song has such an abysmal melody! The instrumentation is sickly. There's absolutely nothing pleasant about this song whatsoever. I LOVE Linda Ronstadt and Dolly Parton, but even they couldn't save this for me. As for Emmylou Harris, I've never been a fan of her voice so the chorus is lost on me too, even though it's definitely better than the verse. Even that is underwhelming to say the least. Also, I hate the repeated words. To know, know, know him is to love, love, love, him. .....sounds awful. Did those words need to be repeated three times? No.

I don't think this song will perform well in Martina's Everlasting rankdown.

I hate it so much lol it does seem that "Some Girls Have All The Luck" is probably leaving us next. I do think it deserves to last a little longer but I'm also not sad if it is what leaves next
