18. A Lesson in Leavin' - Dottie West Total: 258 Average: 19.84 Std Dev: 8.71
Year Released: 1980 Billboard Hot Country Songs Peak: #1
Next up is the second oldest song in the rankdown from 1980 that Jo Dee Messina re-recorded and took all the way to #2 in 1999. Two lose a top 10 ranking while four others lose a top 20; only bboat11 placed this one outside of the top 30. Almost ten years had passed since Dottie last scored a solo top 10 single; she had a string of #1's and top 5's in the late 70's as part duo with Kenny Rogers. She would go on to notch two more #1 songs after "A Lesson in Leavin'." {Songs Remaining}80’s Ladies 9 to 5 Can’t Even Get the Blues No More Eighteen Wheels And A Dozen Roses I Fell In Love Again Last Night I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool My Arms Stay Open All Night Never Had It So Good Nobody Queen of Hearts Seven Year Ache Timber, I’m Falling in Love Turn It Loose Who’s Cheatin’ Who Whoever’s in New England Why Not Me Why’d You Come In Here Lookin’ Like That

17. I Fell In Love Again Last Night - The Forester Sisters Total: 256 Average: 19.69 Std Dev: 10.93
Year Released: 1985 Billboard Hot Country Songs Peak: #1
Our only female country group is next to leave with their 1985 #1 hit "I Fell In Love Again Last Night." This song ended up exceeding all of my expectations and am very happy to see it reach the top 20. Glove Slap loses a top 5 while two more lose a top 10; four of us lose a top 20 while bboat11 loses a bottom 5. My first introduction to the group came from a Christmas album my mom was playing one night while she was putting up Christmas decorations and I heard the song "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree"...I've been a fan of theirs ever since! The Forester Sisters will return in Cody's Country Group Mania rankdown with their song "Just in Case." {Songs Remaining}80’s Ladies 9 to 5 Can’t Even Get the Blues No More Eighteen Wheels And A Dozen Roses I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool My Arms Stay Open All Night Never Had It So Good Nobody Queen of Hearts Seven Year Ache Timber, I’m Falling in Love Turn It Loose Who’s Cheatin’ Who Whoever’s in New England Why Not Me Why’d You Come In Here Lookin’ Like That

16. My Arms Stay Open All Night - Tanya Tucker Total: 244 Average: 18.76 Std Dev: 9.82
Year Released: 1989 Billboard Hot Country Songs Peak: #2
Tanya Tucker is out next with her second song selected for the rankdown. Tanya has always proven to be a divisive artist on Pulse so I'm not surprised to see her miss the top 15; someguy loses a second top 10 while .indulgecountry also loses a top 5; LBTrocks loses a bottom 5 (second to last?!?) while quite a few of us lose a top 20 ranking. "My Arms Stay Open All Night" was released as a single from her first Greatest Hits album under Capitol Records. Tanya was just beginning to hit her stride again and she would go on to see even more success in the early 90's. {Songs Remaining}80’s Ladies 9 to 5 Can’t Even Get the Blues No More Eighteen Wheels And A Dozen Roses I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool Never Had It So Good Nobody Queen of Hearts Seven Year Ache Timber, I’m Falling in Love Turn It Loose Who’s Cheatin’ Who Whoever’s in New England Why Not Me Why’d You Come In Here Lookin’ Like That

Encore! We say goodbye to five more 80's Ladies of Country including Tanya Tucker who exits with her last remaining song in the rankdown.
Suzy Bogguss "I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart" Released as Suzy's first single from her debut album Somewhere Between, this only managed to peak at #77. That yodel though
Janie Fricke "Don't Worry 'Bout Me Baby" This was Janie's first #1 in the 80's and probably is one of my favorites from her.
Dottie West "Here Comes My Baby" My all time favorite song by the great Dottie is her first top 10 song way back from 1964. The song would go on to win her a Grammy for Best Female Country Vocal Performance.
The Forester Sisters "Men" Another favorite of mine that I remember hearing a lot growing up. This song is just a lot of fun!
Tanya Tucker "I’ll Come Back As Another Woman" I came really close to choosing this song to showcase early 80's Tanya as it has always been one of my favorites from her. This was a #2 hit for her in early 1987.

No complaints except that "Cross My Broken Heart" deserved a bit better, but at least it made the top 20. I'm not even a huge fan of Suzy Bogguss, but that song is exquisite!
I love "Lesson In Leavin" but Jo Dee Messina did it WAY better!
I also thought that the person who sang "Jose Cuervo" was a man when I heard it on the radio for the first time, but I soon realized that couldn't be the case when I heard the lyric "did I kiss all the cowboys' cuz I seriously doubted that the industry/radio would have embraced a song from an openly gay male in the 80s, lol.
I like Shelly West though! "You're The Reason God Made Oklahoma" is a great song, especially the lyric 'Santa Montica freeway, sometimes makes a country girl blue' <3 the vocal arrangement in that part is STUNNING!

I like Tanya Tucker, but I prefer her 70s and 90s stuff to her 80s stuff in general. "Delta Dawn" is one of my favorite songs, and I remember hearing a lot of "If Your Heart Ain't Busy Tonight" and "It's A Little Too Late" on the radio when I was growing up.

Janie's always been under appreciated so I'm not surprised to see her miss the top 15 but she was one of the more successful women on this list and I'd advise for people unfamiliar with her work to listen to some of her awesome singles from the 80's!
Suzy's voice is one of my favorites in country history, it's got this crystal clear quality to it that I can never get enough of. Combined with an amazing song like "Cross My Broken Heart" and it's an all time favorite.

I love the guitar work in "I'll Come Back As Another Woman"! I might have heard "Don't Worry 'Bout Me Baby" somewhere before, but I'm not 100% sure...

Yeah, I was surprised how much I disliked the original version of "Lesson In Leavin'"... Jo Dee's is straight fire! I guess that's one song that really benefitted from a modern production and vocal arrangement.

Yeah, I was surprised how much I disliked the original version of "Lesson In Leavin'"... Jo Dee's is straight fire! I guess that's one song that really benefitted from a modern production and vocal arrangement. Same. I wouldn't say I disliked Dottie's by any means, but it very easily pales in comparison to Jo Dee's rendition, and it's not even close to being one of my favorite JDM songs, either, fwiw. Not sad about any of tonight's eliminations except for the Tanya Tucker song, because that was my favorite discovery from doing this RD. Loved that one. I know she's polarizing though on these so I wasn't expecting it to make it any higher than it did though tbh.

I like the way this rankdown is going so far. The only real surprise was Dear Me being eliminated before top 20. I knew Trouble in The Fields didn't stand a chance and I'm just happy that it didn't end up in last place.

The Golden Girls were true Ladies of the 80's! 15. 80's Ladies - K.T. Oslin Total: 242 Average: 18.61 Std Dev: 10.94
Year Released: 1987 Billboard Hot Country Songs Peak: #7
Much to my disappointment K.T. Oslin is the first to leave tonight with her signature hit "80's Ladies." Both myself, Kanenrá:ke , and BackwoodsBarbie lose a top 5 while bboat11 loses a top 10; somehow this also managed to get a bottom 5 ranking! It was with this song that K.T. Oslin went on to become the first female to win a CMA Song of the Year award in 1988; that same year she would go on to win CMA Female Vocalist of the Year as well as the Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. I've always considered K.T. Oslin to be one of the greatest female vocalists of the 80's and her music has always stood out as very unique and often underappreciated on Pulse. {Songs Remaining}9 to 5 Can’t Even Get the Blues No More Eighteen Wheels And A Dozen Roses I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool Never Had It So Good Nobody Queen of Hearts Seven Year Ache Timber, I’m Falling in Love Turn It Loose Who’s Cheatin’ Who Whoever’s in New England Why Not Me Why’d You Come In Here Lookin’ Like That

I guess my references to songs by the bands Queen and Heart went over everyone's head... 14. Queen of Hearts - Juice Newton Total: 223 Average: 17.15 Std Dev: 10.67
Year Released: 1981 Billboard Hot Country Songs Peak: #14 Billboard Hot 100: #2 Billboard Adult Contemporary: #2
Juice Newton's crossover hit from 1981 is the next song to leave the rankdown. Kanenrá:ke loses his second top 5 in a row while three others lose a top 10; although I put this just inside my top 20 I definitely think I underranked this one just a bit. Speaking of underranking...how did this manage to get not one but two bottom 5 rankings?!? This song was Juice's first top 20 country single and was quickly followed by her #1 hit "The Sweetest Thing (I've Ever Known)." {Songs Remaining}9 to 5 Can’t Even Get the Blues No More Eighteen Wheels And A Dozen Roses I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool Never Had It So Good Nobody Seven Year Ache Timber, I’m Falling in Love Turn It Loose Who’s Cheatin’ Who Whoever’s in New England Why Not Me Why’d You Come In Here Lookin’ Like That

"What about love Don't you want someone to care about you What about love Don't let it slip away"
because you've... 13. Never Had It So Good - Mary Chapin Carpenter Total: 220 Average: 16.92 Std Dev: 10.38 Year Released: 1989 Billboard Hot Country Songs Peak: #8/div] "What About Love" by Heart was also foreshadowing our next song to leave the rankdown "Never Had It So Good" by Mary Chapin Carpenter who is also the last of the Class of '89 in the rankdown. I lose my second top 10 of the evening joining two others while two more lose a top 5 including a #2 ranking. This song flirted with the top 10 for a while but couldn't escape some of the lower rankings that came in for it. This song was Mary's second single and first top 10 hit in late 1989. She'd go on to have one more top 10 and top 20 singles from her State of the Heart album before going on to achieve greater success in the early 90's. {Songs Remaining}9 to 5 Can’t Even Get the Blues No More Eighteen Wheels And A Dozen Roses I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool Nobody Seven Year Ache Timber, I’m Falling in Love Turn It Loose Who’s Cheatin’ Who Whoever’s in New England Why Not Me Why’d You Come In Here Lookin’ Like That

12. I Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool - Barbara Mandrell Total: 216 Average: 16.61 Std Dev: 9.72
Year Released: 1981 Billboard Hot Country Songs Peak: #1
The living legend herself Barbara Mandrell misses the top 10 with one of her signature songs from 1981. This only received one top 5 ranking and top 10 ranking, but was able to notch seven top 15 rankings which all but assured this one a place just outside of the top 10 (and what about that bottom 5 ranking Glove Slap ?!?). This song really is a classic and will live on forever; I remember hearing it quite often on the radio growing up and can still hear it on the radio today. {Songs Remaining}9 to 5 Can’t Even Get the Blues No More Eighteen Wheels And A Dozen Roses Nobody Seven Year Ache Timber, I’m Falling in Love Turn It Loose Who’s Cheatin’ Who Whoever’s in New England Why Not Me Why’d You Come In Here Lookin’ Like That

Here's a nice video I discovered while doing this rankdown... You've gotta love an artist who always goes out of their way to honor the people who paved the way for them! By the way, how about that surprise special guest, tim?

I love the lyrics of 80s ladies, but none of the other elements reach even halfway to that level for me.
I can take Juice Newton in certain doses, but this might be my favorite single from her. It's helped by AOTM being driven into the ground for me.
I don't like the Barbara Mandrell song. It's on the lesser side of familiarity for me, but I have heard it before and didn't enjoy it then either. If my ranking kept it out the top 10 then I'm glad, especially since my bottom ranking is still in.

11. Who's Cheatin' Who - Charly McClain Total: 215 Average: 16.53 Std Dev: 10.39
Year Released: 1980 Billboard Hot Country Songs Peak: #1
Our last song to be revealed tonight that just misses the top 10 is "Who's Cheatin' Who" (and later covered by Alan Jackson). Kanenrá:ke loses yet another top 5 tonight as does bboat11 ; two more lose a top 10 while two others lose their #31. This was Charly's first #1 hit in 1981 and will forever be her signature song that never gets old! {Songs Remaining}9 to 5 Can’t Even Get the Blues No More Eighteen Wheels And A Dozen Roses Nobody Seven Year Ache Timber, I’m Falling in Love Turn It Loose Whoever’s in New England Why Not Me Why’d You Come In Here Lookin’ Like That

Nice to see "Queen of Hearts" finally go. I didn't care for that one at all, especially the production. It felt very dated and cheap, in ways that many of the other songs didn't for me (because obviously all of these are *technically* dated).
