"Right Where I Need To Be" wins the Gary Allan rankdown and it had a decent gap over the rest of the songs. "Smoke Rings In The Dark" also performed terrific however.
"Smoke Rings In The Dark" was released in August of 1999 as the lead single to Gary's album of the same name. It snuck into the R&R top 10 in January of 2000, while "Right Where I Need To Be" was released in September of 2000 and peaked in late May/early June of 2001. Billboard changed their chart to 60 songs from 75 at the end of the year, so while this song's chart numbers were re-calculated, it did spend 48 total weeks on the chart and 35 weeks in the R&R top 50, which were records in the modern era, before "Baby Girl" by Sugarland came along and broke the 60 song Billboard chart record and R&R record (36 weeks) in 2005.
"Smoke Rings" has always been in my top 2-3 Gary singles and is probably my favorite if I had to choose just one. I love the production, instrumentation and vocals. It's so haunting and it extremely well-written. I just can't see that song being released nowadays on Country radio because the way it is written. It's also my dad's favorite Gary single lol. It's also among the most beloved songs from Gary fans.
"Right Where I Need To Be" charted in the spring the first year my dad, nephew and I got season passes for the first time to Six Flags Darien Lake NY. We went most weekends and I heard it so may times from recurrent play that summer on the drives. So whenever I hear this song, I think of those times. It's also got a fantastic melody, the guitar riff is infectious and the lyrics are relatable for a ton of people, including myself. It's easy to get caught up in work and trying to advance in life goals, when in reality, your significant other is the most important one of all.
Hope you all had as much fun as I did. :)
