What are some songs that, while they were hits, seriously hampered the career the artists who performed them?
A good example of this imo is Donkey by Jerrod Nielsen -- he was coming off a fairly big country hit and the song rose quickly out of novelty, but it had a very fast rise and fall and he was never heard from again. A similar case happened to a lesser extent with Red Solo Cup by Toby Keith, though he was too big of a name to have his career completely ruined by one song.
You could also argue this happened with The Reason by Hoobastank -- even after it became a huge hit on both rock formats before crossing over to HAC/CHR, it seemed to kill their rocker cred, at least partly, and their subsequent hits seemed to have much less of an impact on the rock charts then the hits that preceded The Reason.

Are we crazy? Livin' our lives through a lens Trapped in our white picket fence Like ornaments So comfortable, we're livin' in a bubble, bubble So comfortable, we cannot see the trouble, trouble Aren't you lonely Up there in utopia Where nothing will ever be enough? Happily numb So comfortable, we're livin' in a bubble, bubble So comfortable, we cannot see the trouble, trouble Ah, so good Your rose-colored glasses on And party on (woo) Turn it up, it's your favorite song Dance, dance, dance to the distortion Turn it up, keep it on repeat Stumblin' around like a wasted zombie Yeah, we think we're free Drink, this one's on me We're all chained to the rhythm To the rhythm, to the rhythm Turn it up, it's your favorite song Dance, dance, dance to the distortion Turn it up, keep it on repeat Stumblin' around like a wasted zombie Yeah, we think we're free Drink, this one's on me We're all chained to the rhythm To the rhythm, to the rhythm Are we tone deaf? Keep sweepin' it under the mat Thought we could do better than that I hope we can So comfortable, we're livin' in a bubble, bubble So comfortable, we cannot see the trouble, trouble Aha, so good (so good) Your rose-colored glasses on And party on (woo) Turn it up, it's your favorite song Dance, dance, dance to the distortion Turn it up, keep it on repeat Stumblin' around like a wasted zombie Yeah, we think we're free Drink, this one's on me We're all chained to the rhythm To the rhythm, to the rhythm Turn it up, it's your favorite song (oh) Dance, dance, dance to the distortion Turn it up, keep it on repeat Stumblin' around like a wasted zombie Yeah, we think we're free Drink, this one's on me We're all chained to the rhythm To the rhythm, to the rhythm (woah) It is my desire Break down the walls to connect, inspire Ay, up in your high place, liars Time is ticking for the empire The truth they feed is feeble As so many times before The greed over the people They stumblin' and fumblin' and we're about to riot They woke up, they woke up the lions (woah) Turn it up, it's your favorite song (hey) Dance, dance, dance to the distortion Turn it up (turn it up), keep it on repeat Stumbling around like a wasted zombie (like a wasted zombie) Yeah, we think we're free (ah) Drink, this one's on me (ah) We're all chained to the rhythm (we're all) To the rhythm, to the rhythm (we're all chained to the rhythm) It goes on, and on, and on It goes on, and on, and on (turn it up, it goes on and on and on and on) It goes on, and on, and on (on and on and on it goes) 'Cause we're all chained to the rhythm

It also hasn't helped that her singles since then have become everything she was totally against at the beginning of her career. She was an Alternative Pop girl then she became the Jejune Appropriating Pop Girl and no one liked her anymore.

Didn't even make Top 40. He's had four songs now that have made it farther than "Donkey" since then so idk that he was 'never heard from again' though he's definitely not a big star... tho he never was to begin with... 2) "Red Solo Cup" actually revived Toby's career and actually extended it an extra couple years after he was already beginning to be phased out tbh.

Whoops you can tell I don't know what I'm talking about : p Didn't Donkey do pretty well on the hot 100 though? Iirc at minimum he hasn't had any new singles outpeak Donkey in that metric, which says something since his single prior to Donkey was pretty big, and he had a few minor but still notable hits before that I believe. Young and Menace by Fall Out Boy. Not even remotely a hit, it bombed everywhere.

Blurred Lines is definitely the best example of a career killer. How does someone go from being a decade-long B-list r&b singer to written off as a one-hit-wonder pop singer in less than six months??? Bless his heart. Made all the worse by his partner in crime Pharrell not only escaping unscathed, but releasing two even bigger smashes the next year.
MC Hammer's Pumps and a Bump - peaked at #3 on rap, though just #26 on the Hot 100. The song on its own was ridiculous eneough but thee original video is what really sealed the deal. He became the immediate butt of all jokes and even got banned from heavy rotation on MTV because of his Speedos lmao. He filmed an alternative video to get around it, but the damage was done. He was probably about to be phased out anyway b/c gangsta rap had just blown up, but this blatant attempt to stay on trend sped up the process tenfold.
(Side bar: I am still convinced He Like That flopped b/c 5th Harmony's fanbase and target pop audience are either too young or too far removed from 90s and hip-hop culture to appreciate the hilarious genius of flipping a Pumps and a Bump sample.)
This didn't kill her career, as we obviously know now, but an honorable mention should go out to Mariah and Loverboy. It definitely put her on ice for a few years. Like MC Hammer, the video seemed to hurt her more than the song.

It didn't make the Hot 100 at all, lol. It flamed out super fast and I think the label pulled it from radio like a little over a month into its chart run and sent out a new single. He had been seeing diminishing returns on each subsequent single he'd released after his #1 breakthrough hit "Lover, Lover" in 2010 until "Drink to That All Night" brought him back to #1, but releasing "Donkey" as the follow-up definitely wrecked all of the comeback momentum he had, so you're half right that it did serious damage to his career (he hasn't had a hit since -- though his current single is showing signs of taking off and looks like it could do something)... "Donkey" just wasn't a hit single.

So who's gonna post "Look What You Made Me Do"? Most would kill to have flops that peak as high as LWYMMD, ...RFI, and EG. Nicki Minaj - "Starships" "Anaconda" did pretty well after that. And she did do fine on Rhythmic and Urban with subsequent singles though her going Pop for a while did make things harder.

Intuition by Jewel - peaked at #20 and was her biggest hit(on that chart anyway) in 5 years but damaged her brand and she's only had 2 other charting hits since, both in the 80s range.

Made all the worse by his partner in crime Pharrell not only escaping unscathed, but releasing two even bigger smashes the next year. It didn't help that "Give It 2 U" was so overly sexual and not in the way that you want and after that shocking VMA performance. But then his marriage blew up and he released that awful album as a "tribute" to Paula Patton. That was really sad though watching him humping the stage and gyrating while singing a heartfelt song to win Paula back. Girl...

^BL was such a good album, it's really confusing that with the options he had for single #2 he thought GI2U was a good idea. Paula is actually a decent album too IMO - it's more similar to his pre-BL material - he just shouldn't have named it Paula and tried to publicly guilt her into taking his funky ass back. That only guaranteed no one would take him seriously.
I guess it's fairer to say that it wasn't BL's success that killed him, but his inability to handle the success. He seemed to lose all sense of self-awareness as soon as hee beceem a hotshot.

โMe Tooโ was a hit as well tho Carry On by fun.? Fun hasn't released a single since CO lmao. Also even Me Too was a hit, I would say it arguably underperformed since it only peaked in the teens and tanked after peaking, and she hasn't had a hit since (though we will see how No Excuses does). This doesn't necessarily mean they never had a hit again, just that their career had significant damage done to it and they never returned to the level of success before that song was released.

The king of career killers, including the video which is super rapey and objectifying. I feel like only a few years later, no one would have tolerated this video.

Although it was technically a Guetta song, I'd say Sexy B!tch for Akon. He was on his way out, it seemed, but since that song, he hasn't made it back to even the top 20, as a lead or featured artist.

Toby Keith's career was on a downward slope starting in like 2005.
"Red Solo Cup" just happened to be a strange outlier. Somewhat of a viral hit I believe.
I don't see why somebody would believe that Toby Keith's career was somehow "ruined" or "ended" by such a big song.
"Bullets in the Gun" and "American Ride" both performed really poorly in comparison to the rest of his career. Those were the albums before "Red Solo Cup".

Somebody said "Fancy" by Iggy Azalea?
"Fancy" is Iggy's first charting song. If it wasn't for "Fancy", she probably wouldn't have any career at all.

There's a difference between a song that becomes an artist's last major hit and a song that becomes a hit but somehow hurts the artist's credibility or reputation. Let's not start listing artist's last hits as if they're somehow responsible for them never having another hit again.
