The point margins get a little tighter for the rest of the bottom 10; #56 is only 8 points ahead of #57. Rounding out the bottom 5 is the first song with 2 top half ranks, though neither of them will deliver much pizzazz. It actually only has two bottom 10s, but they're a bottom 5 and the last 60 of the night. Fittingly, this earned the 6th lowest SD. This song bombed quickly, then bobbed in and out of the bottom 5.

#55 has the 5th lowest SD, as evidenced by the fact that only one person even thought to place it in this region (that's a bottom 5, btw). This song, too, has 2 low top half rankings, but it also has 6 placements in the 40s area. The true weight of its lack of love hit moreso at the beginning and the end of the movements.

#54 is the first song to spend any time in the top half, though that time was just part of its slow and excruciating downfall, only hitting rock bottom at the very end. One top 15 is lost, but so are 2 bottom 10s and a bottom 5.

#53 spent a fair amount of time in the 30s and 40s before ending up here. It has both a top 20 and 25, contrasted with 4 bottom 10s. Some of you feared much worse would happen to this song.

Already down a top half ranking early, though with how many people are losing top 20 and even top 10 rankings...I suppose I can't complain too much. Are my 59 and 60, the only two songs I didn't really care for, going to be the last of my bottom ten to survive?

#52 is where our other top 10 of the night is found. Unfortunately for that panelist, it only has one other top half rank as backup, and otherwise carries 3 bottom 10s and 2 bottom 5s. This song never left the bottom 10, and other than an early appearance at 51, this was its peak.

At #51, let's finish the bottom 10 with the first song to cross 200 points. It has two half rankings, one being a top 15. The majority of rankings, however, are in the bottom 15, and one person each put this in their bottom 10 and 5. This was a consistent bottom dweller, although it escaped the bottom 10 as late as the second-to-last submission.

Yea, I wasn't just going to stop doing extras with the metal rankdown. The reasons why these songs aren't in the rankdown proper are various--other rankdowns called dibs on them, or I came to them a little late, or I just didn't want to put too much on your plates, or I forgot, or I wasn't sure if they'd fit. I'll post them 5 per set for the first 5 sets. Expect this one to appear in 1991 Alt, as well as peacebone's Dream Pop Rankdown. I wanted to make sure this rankdown was clearly identifiable as an alternative rock list, so I avoided dipping deep into alternative metal. But if I had, there were a number of options, starting with this. I think it'll be an extra in both 1992 (or '93, can't tell) rock rankdowns too, lol EXTRA

First off, these were all first time listens. 60. The Hymn for the Cigarettes - HefnerFirst time listen. The bass guitar surely gives it a peppy vibe. I'm guessing I would have ranked this quite high. 59. Does Love Last Forever? - BrighterAnother first time listen. I definitely like the vocals better. This is also the type of uptempo Alt song I would boost on my list. 58. Turn It On - Sleater-KinneyWell these songs are surely better than I imagined they would be. Great vocals here. I didn't expect this much uptempo vibe. I like, Three for three. So far so good. 57. Echos Myron - Guided By VoicesEven this one wasn't so bad. Sounds ready made for AAA. 56. Stars 'n Stripes - Grant Lee BuffaloThe artist name sounds familiar, but the song doesn't. This not really my cup o tea. 55. How Could I Be Wrong - The AuteursAnother first time listen. This band reminds me a bit of The Animals or The Zombies. This is a good song. 54. Fractured (Like Chandeliers) - PolvoI was expecting Spanish lyrics? Anyway, this sounded out of tune. I'll pass. 53. Gold Dust - DusterNever heard of this band. I'm not much for instrumentals either. 52. Hot Water & Milk - SpiderbaitMore like Doc Indie Party Rock bait. This one grabbed me from the start. favorite song so far, and Love the Psychedelic guitars and female vocals in this. Gonna have to check more of their songs now. 51. Alcoholiday - Teenage FanclubI might not have followed Alt music too much in the 90's, but I did follow 91x and none of these appeared on their year end lists. Anyway, this was good too.

EXTRAS: All first time listens, except one. Drive That Fast - Kitchens of DistinctionDamn! This one was great. Sounds like Spanish Rock vibe. Probably would have been in my top 10. BTW, where is peacebone 's Dreampop rankdown? I like Dreampop. Roses - dEUSThat artist name almost looks like an alternate way to write Deuce. LOL! The song isn't bad, it just didn't get my blood pumping. Whisper - MorphineI like the horns or brass section. Unsung - HelmetThis band I know. This song is good. That vibe of guitar works for me. At first listen, thought It was Ozzy on vocals. Grace Cathedral Park - Red House Painters"slowcore" huh? More like "borecore". This style isn't for me.

These rankdowns have taught me indirectly that everybody thinks my taste in music sucks. Keep in mind that, I'm pretty sure, the consensus among the participants is this list was really good on the whole. So, where people ranked songs was more fungible and swung by personal taste quirks than on, like, a usual Year-End rankdown or something. Also, as a now-twice personal RD host, it's pretty cool when you get a list that's contrary to what other people may have ranked low; it means even the lesser-regarded offerings were worth including because they found someone who considered them favorites. Also for what it's worth many of your high rankings made me happy for one reason or another

Going into this rankdown I wasn't sure how I'd do but I definitely did not think I'd be doing this well. I liked pretty much every song that was included here. The songs that ended up in my bottom 10 just weren't as memorable or meaningful to me compared to the rest.
I would've ranked "Drive That Fast" slightly higher than "Railwayed". "Roses" wouldn't have been as high for me as "Instant Street" but that one took quite a few listens to really get into though. "Whisper" would've ended up around #40 on my list. I would've had "Unsung" in my top 5 for sure. Finally, I likely would've ranked "Grace Cathedral Park" in my mid-40s.
