Alice Merton Makes Billboard Hot 100 Debut With 'No Roots'
4/3/2018 by Xander Zellner
The song previously topped the Alternative & Adult Alternative Songs charts.
German-Irish-Canadian singer-songwriter Alice Merton, 24, earns her first entry on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (dated April 7), as "No Roots" debuts at No. 100.
The song, which has already found success on Billboard's rock charts, garnered 19 million radio audience impressions, 3.1 million U.S. streams and sold 10,000 downloads in the tracking week, according to Nielsen Music.
In February, Merton became the first woman to hit No. 1 on the Rock Airplay chart since Lorde, with "Royals," in 2014. A week later, Merton became just the ninth solo woman to hit No. 1 as a lead on the Alternative Songs airplay chart (which began in 1988).
Merton first led the Adult Alternative Songs airplay chart for four weeks beginning Dec. 30.
Now in its 32nd week on Alternative Songs and its 26th frame on Adult Alternative Songs, "Roots" has taken hold at pop formats. It keeps at its No. 16 high in its 19th week on Adult Pop Songs and climbs 31-29 in its seventh week on Pop Songs.
Merton, Billboard's Chartbreaker spotlight artist in October, says that her nomadic lifestyle inspired "Roots," as she has lived in Germany, Canada, England and the U.S. While visiting her parents in England three years ago, she realized, "I didn't have just one place where I could say, 'That's my home.' "
Merton ranks at No. 12 on the Emerging Artists chart (after hitting No. 8), while "Roots" places at No. 8 on Hot Rock Songs (after reaching No. 5).
The hit appears on Merton's debut EP No Roots, released in February 2017.

Panic! at the Disco's 'Say Amen (Saturday Night)' Debuts on Hot 100
The single also lands at No. 5 on the Hot Rock Songs chart.
Panic! at the Disco scores its highest entry on the Billboard Hot 100 in three years, as the act's latest single, "Say Amen (Saturday Night)," debuts at No. 60 (on the chart dated April 7).
Following its first full week of tracking after its March 21 release, "Amen" arrives with 6.8 million U.S. streams and 23,000 downloads sold in the week ending March 29, according to Nielsen Music, prompting a No. 14 debut on the Digital Song Sales chart. The single also boasts 2.9 million radio audience impressions.
Panic! at the Disco has now earned 12 total entries on the Hot 100, dating to its first, "I Write Sins Not Tragedies," which peaked at No. 7 in 2006, marking the act's only top 10 to date. "Amen" makes the band's second-highest debut, after only "Hallelujah," which launched and peaked at No. 40 in May 2015.
Panic! at The Disco's Biggest Billboard Hot 100 Hits Rank, Title, Peak Position, Peak Date 1. "I Write Sins Not Tragedies," No. 7, Aug. 26, 2006 2. "Nine in the Afternoon," No. 51, April 26, 2008 3. "The Only Difference Between Martyrdom and Suicide Is Press Coverage," No. 77, May 6, 2006 4. "Emperor's New Clothes," No. 68, Nov. 14, 2015 5. "Hallelujah," No. 40, May 9, 2015
Panic! at the Disco's Biggest Billboard Hot 100 Hits is based on actual performance on the weekly Billboard Hot 100 through the chart dated April 7, 2018. Songs are ranked based on an inverse point system, with weeks at No. 1 earning the greatest value and weeks at No. 100 earning the least. Due to changes in chart methodology over the years, certain eras are weighted to account for different chart turnover rates over various periods.
"Amen" concurrently charges 12-5 in its second week on the Hot Rock Songs chart, earning the act its third top five hit, following "Hallelujah" (No. 3 peak) and "Emperor's New Clothes" (No. 5). The song also surges 36-21 on the Alternative Songs airplay chart and 40-27 on the all-rock-genre Rock Airplay survey.
"Amen" is one of two releases from Panic! at the Disco's sixth studio album, Pray for the Wicked, due June 22. The other song so far available from the set, "(f**k A) Silver Lining," bounds 25-10 in its second week on Hot Rock Songs.

Yeah, though I'm surprised that it's been a rock hit already, because doing a blind listen of it, it doesn't sound like a rock song to me. But it will be nice if it continues to cross over and be huge.

But it will be nice if it continues to cross over and be huge. Well, much like long time country fans lament the current state of country music, I think long time rock fans are doing the same. Recent rock hits by twenty one pilots, Portgual the Man, and now Alice Merton (regardless of their quality) aren't exactly "rock" as most people think of rock. I do like "No Roots" and hope it becomes a "Feel It Still" type of hit.

What does "alternative rock" exactly mean? Isn't that where tøp |-/ is classified?

Hot 100 Chart Moves: Camila Cabello's 'Never Be the Same' Hits New High & Reaches Radio Songs Top 10
Plus, a record-extending feat for Maroon 5 & the Hot 100 is suddenly big on Japan.
As previously reported, Drake becomes the first male soloist to have tallied two 10-week No. 1s on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in a lead role, as "God's Plan" reigns for a 10th week (encompassing its entire run on the survey so far). His "One Dance," featuring WizKid and Kyla, ruled for 10 weeks in 2016.
"God's Plan," meanwhile, is just the 36th No. 1, of 1,071 total in the Hot 100's 59-year history, to have led for at least 10 weeks, and the fifth to have spent at least its first 10 weeks on top.
Plus, Shawn Mendes surges 72-22 with "In My Blood" and debuts at No. 64 with fellow new track "Lost in Japan"; Panic! at the Disco earns the chart's top debut of the week, as "Say Amen (Saturday Night)" starts at No. 60; and, Alice Merton makes her Hot 100 entrance at No. 100 with "No Roots," her former No. 1 on the Alternative Songs and Adult Alternative Songs airplay charts.
In addition to all that action, who else makes notable Hot 100 chart moves this week?
"Never Be the Same," Camila Cabello
The song ascends to the Hot 100's top 15 for the first time, jumping 19-14, while also rising to the Radio Songs top 10 (13-10; 66.1 million in all-genre airplay audience in the week ending April 1, according to Nielsen Music). Cabello earns her third solo Radio Songs top 10, following "Bad Things," with Machine Gun Kelly (No. 3, February 2017), and "Havana," featuring Young Thug (No. 1 for four weeks, beginning Dec. 23).
Fifth Harmony, of which Cabello was a member until she departed in December 2016, tallied two Radio Songs top 10s (both with her in the group, which last month announced its hiatus): "Worth It," featuring Kid Ink (No. 9, 2015), and "Work From Home," featuring Ty Dolla $ign (No. 4, 2016).
As "Havana" ranks at No. 9 on Radio Songs (and No. 10 on the Hot 100), a spot above "Never Be the Same," Cabello is the first female soloist to chart two titles in the Radio Songs top 10 simultaneously as the sole lead artist on each hit in over two years, since Adele ranked at No. 4 with "Hello" and No. 10 with "When We Were Young" on Feb. 27, 2016.
Wait," Maroon 5
The track hits a new high on the Hot 100 (29-26) and the top 10 (12-10) on the Adult Pop Songs airplay chart, where it's the band's record-extending 23rd top 10. Dating to the Adult Pop Songs chart's premiere in the Billboard magazine dated March 16, 1996, here's a look at the acts with the most top 10s: 23, Maroon 5 17, Taylor Swift 16, Kelly Clarkson 15, P!nk 14, Goo Goo Dolls 14, Katy Perry 14, Train 13, matchbox twenty 11, Bruno Mars 11, John Mayer 11, Nickelback
"Japan," Famous Dex
As noted above, Shawn Mendes debuts at No. 64 on the Hot 100 with "Lost in Japan." Six notches lower, rapper Famous Dex bows at No. 70 with "Japan" (from his first LP, Dex Meets Dexter, due Friday, April 6). With that easy set-up, let's look at the highest-charting Hot 100 entries with "Japan" in their titles: No. 36, "Turning Japanese," The Vapors, Nov. 29, 1980 No. 64 (to date), "Lost in Japan," Shawn Mendes, April 7, 2018 No. 66, "Big in Japan," Alphaville, Jan. 12, 1985 No. 70 (to date), "Japan," Famous Dex, April 7, 2018 No. 74, "Me Japanese Boy I Love You," Bobby Goldsboro, Sept. 12, 1964 Unsurprisingly, this is the first week that two titles with "Japan" in their names have debuted, or even charted, simultaneously. As for what music is actually big in Japan this week? Check out this week's Japan Hot 100.
