Yeah...I was just referring to Mario saying the song samples a #1 hit with a huge-ass melody, when technically, it samples the club remix of the song, which has a different melody, from what I can hear in the sample. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I was able to listen to the preview of Emotionless and the MJ track, and I liked them both on first listen. Nonstop is not my favorite style of Drake song, but I sure dig the slick production.

Mariah's been performing the intro live as well in the past few years. I mean it is recognisable. The lyrics, the vocals.. the girls can just Shazam it and bam!

This is tied with Views (which I actually love, LOL) as ChampagneLiterallyPapi's lowest reviewed album. His highest remains the So Far Gone mixtape.

Introspective. I love it. I just expect Drake to be Drake, and he delivered. Not gonna rate it yet, tho.

I didn't realize until I was close to finished with the A side that I literally do not have time to focus on this rn so it's just been playing in the background and I've barely caught any of the lyrics. Eff Spotify for not having this up when I was awake and had the time. With that said my hot takes atm:
- Side B > > > Side A. It's not entirely singing per se but it's definitely the softer/'for the ladies'/'click here for hooks' side, while Side A is his 'rapper' side. The issue is that a lot of the album is slow to mid-tempo, which works for the B side but not for the A side where it feels like he's lacking energy. Strangely enough most of the more energetic songs are on the B side. Well, that and tbh he's almost always sounded more inspired when singing than rapping. He only gets fired up when he's beefing.
- Summer Games needs to be a single, but I'm dying at it sounding like 808s Kanye and Red Taylor Swift had a baby.
- the radio DJ at the end of After Dark literally sounds exactly like the guy who used to host the Quiet Storm on my local UAC station back in the '90s/early '00s and that cracked me up for some reason
- why does MJ's voice sound like that? If it weren't for the credit (which the MJ estate likely demanded) I wouldn't know it was him at all...and I probably wouldn't think it sounds bad. But knowing that it is supposed to be MJ brings the song down several notches b/c I can't stop thinking, 'wth that's not what MJ sounds like.' Maybe I'll get over it eventually.
Emotionless gets its own section because I'm such a lamb lol, but I'm thinking the fact that it's the only A-side track that really caught my ear right away doesn't bode well for that side's repeatability.
- Drake kind of has a habit of not crediting the artists he samples in his features. On this album alone he has uncredited Aaliyah, Mariah, and Nicki vocals. A lot of times he just speeds up the clip or gets an unknown to sing it - interpolations are generally less expensive than a direct sample of the original vocal, and an established artist or estate would command a much bigger payment or even royalties for using their name. So I'm thinking this is a budget/clearance issue more so than pettiness. But with that in mind he might as well have gone ahead and given Mariah that credit even if she didn't ask for it; it's one of the few times he kept the original, undistorted vocals AND he's giving her royalties as a songwriter, so he's already paying out the ass anyway.
- Emotionless would be a smash at urban, but it's Drake: almost anything he chose to send to urban would be 'single worthy.' It's not a pop hit, in structure or subject matter (any other pop singles will likely come from the B side). And it's the song where he addresses his kid's existence (and contains most of the Kanye sneak disses that I was expecting to happen once J Prince shut down his response to Adidon) so I'm thinking he won't be inclined to release it b/c it's not something he'll always feel like performing. However, due to the subject matter and early placement on the A side it will get attention and high streams regardless.

You guys are trippin with the Drake not giving credit. As if this is ANYTHING new for Rap or music in general. LOL
You do not give Nicki a credit when it is reusing a live vocal sample lol. You don't credit Mariah for an existing piece of work either. It reminds me of Eminem song "Sing For THe Moment" which was a pretty big hit that sampled Aerosmith's "Dream On"... it was literally the chorus for the song and they had no credit. That's just not how it works. they get the royals and its all agreed upon with the artists and/or labels.
TL;DR - Drake is not being petty or doing anything different than any other rap or pop artist.

I think the case with Dido is different since it was still a "current" song and it was sort of used as cross promotion? Plus, she was in the video. Dido released that as a single in December 2000 while Eminem released it on his album in May 2000. So they were definitley co-existing.

Sounds OK and as polished as you'd expect, but he's just a commercial heavyweight for me at this point - I no longer find what he does particularly interesting or compelling.

I don't think anyone is implying that it's a new thing to not credit an artist for a mere sample (as I mentioned above, it's probably just a $$$ issue for any artist). However, it has happened enough in recent years that it can be commanded, especially by someone of Mariah's stature. I even kind of get Choco's theory that if Mariah had asked for credit, Drake would have dropped the sample, but it likely would have been because he or his label simply didn't want to pay that much for one loop.

I highly doubt Drake would've dropped the sample if Mariah wanted to be credited. lol Why would you think he would do that? He didn't use the JLO sample because they broke up. Would you want to be associated with your ex on your CD?? I don't think so... Also, how do we know that it wasn't JLO herself that didn't revoke the clearance?
And yes, Dido was credited. as I said, the song was current at the time. and aren't/weren't they on the same label?

I highly doubt Drake would've dropped the sample if Mariah wanted to be credited. lol Why would you think he would do that? I literally gave the reason he would do that in the same sentence that I mentioned it. I even kind of get Choco's theory that if Mariah had asked for credit, Drake would have dropped the sample, but it likely would have been because he or his label simply didn't want to pay that much for one loop.Features and samples cost money. Interpolations are cheaper than straight samples. Even for someone like Drake, who is surely bringing in a bunch of money, he probably already paid a lot of money or gave up a sizable royalty % to use the sample; crediting Mariah might have cost even more (either in royalty points or an upfront payment) and at some point he might decide it's too much or that it takes up too much of his overall production budget. This completely contradicts your earlier assertion that Drake "isn't being petty." If you don't want to be associated with your ex, why use her song at all? I personally don't think he's petty about other artists he doesn't credit, but the JLo situation was the definition of petty. JLo doesn't own any of the rights to IYHML so she couldn't have revoked anything.

Listening to the album in full for the first time right now. Side A started strong but died down quickly after "God's Plan" and "I'm Upset".

The B-side has more replay value than the A-side. I'm enjoying the f**k out of "After Dark" and "Don't Matter To Me". The singles work so much better on the album.

Done with the A-side. Best track so far is "Emotionless", with "Nonstop" as second. But man, the second half of that side isn't anything special at all imo. Lots of filler again.
Onto Side B now.

I agree, I can't remember much from the second half of Side A. The only thing I can remember after I'm Upset without looking right now is the Jay-Z feature and its amazing production, although I've only listened to the whole thing twice.

"After Dark" gave me more Aaliyah than "Is There More" which actually samples Aaliyah.
This album is already better to me than More Life and maybe Views. I think I like more tracks overall. Of course a lot of the album is going to take time to sink in. But YAS Drake! You did this!

Alright, Side B is definitely the better of the two. Standouts are "Summer Games", "In My Feelings" and "Don't Matter To Me", with the latter two so far being my favorite off of the album (with Nice For What). It's a pretty bloated album (again) but thats not to say it's bad.
My initial thoughts will probably change over the next couple of days.

When that intro hits I choke up immediately then the bass hits and I'm in love. Halfway in I realize it's typical Drake.
