Purple has been a hot topic in music for a while from Flying purple people eater to purple rain, it just makes sense this might take a while to die.
Sorry, couldn't resist.
Still not big on the song, it isn't growing on me like I thought it would.

Surprised this isn’t taking off as fast as Kenny Chesney’s latest. His single came out not even a full week before Carrie’s, and yet he’s 12 spots higher on Mediabase. Oh wait, I forgot Carrie Underwood is a female.

Oh wait, I forgot Carrie Underwood is a female. TBH Get Along is selling a lot better than Cry Pretty now (#17 vs #63). Of course you can say Kenny's selling better due to radio "spamming" his songs, but it doesn't help the fact that Carrie's not selling that great to "force" radio to start playing Cry Pretty more frequently.

Oh wait, I forgot Carrie Underwood is a female. Carrie is the ONLY female who can’t use being female as an excuse. The fact is, this is a song that will be amazing being performed live at concerts, but it’s not great for radio. I’m thinking we may have a more radio friendly single released in the next month or so that acts more like a lead single and this more of a “hype” single.

I’m not surprised by the slower go of this song, as older acts such as Zac Brown Band, Rascal Flatts, Brad Paisley, and Lady Antebellum have definitely slowed down as well. I’m still confident that this will go number 1 or 2 but maybe not in less than 20 weeks.

And on the flip side they have enough time to release another single and have it peak around the album release date. There's enough time for them to do exactly that... without pulling this song and letting it go early or calling it a "hype single." This is definitely going at least Top 3 like all her other radio singles have done, because I'm positive that was the goal with releasing this, and it'll do that long before the album comes out.

Probably my least favourite CU single since Mama's Song.....perhaps 2nd least favourite ever. Excited to hear what else she's got :).

Well that answers that. Not just a hype single release.

Well that answers that. Not just a hype single release. Was just a theory.... just like people are saying maybe a visual album... hopefully this helps sales because they are piss poor for a Carrie Underwood lead single considering how well "The Fighter" sold.

Carrie has some of the best “stans” out there but to think this song will end anywhere but #1 on the country charts is insanity. No way Capitol doesn’t work this to #1. It’s her first radio single with them. They won’t drop that ball. Well that answers that. Not just a hype single release. Was just a theory.... just like people are saying maybe a visual album... hopefully this helps sales because they are piss poor for a Carrie Underwood lead single considering how well "The Fighter" sold. That wasn’t even her song and it sold well after radio success but it’s not a real comparison for “Cry Pretty”. “Champion” sold well and this one will Still be a big RIAA certified hit for her. Relax. Everything is fine and just where it should be for her.

Not sure why "The Fighter" was mentioned since it wasn't a single from a Carrie project. You also can't compare sales totals at this point since digital sales have completely eroded. Position comparisons are a better one. Obviously no other Carrie lead single was #1 on Digital Songs like "Cry Pretty," but it had the ACMs to help it. It debuted on Digital Songs off 1 day of sales. It then moved to #1 and was #24 this past week.

Sales are in the total gutter nowadays. The fact that she was #1 on the all-genre Digital Songs chart (her first time at the top, ever) with 54k is telling of how universally bleak sales are for everyone across the board.

It was mentioned because in Carrie’s thread on here, multiple people brought up something along the lines of, “Wow, if this (“The Champion,”) is selling so well, imagine what a lead single with radio airplay is going to sell like.” That’s why my expectations were higher and i think others were too - maybe they don’t share those opinions now, but at the time of, “The Champion,” they did.

Guys, I'm an idiot. I meant "The Champion," not "The Fighter."
My apologies for completely fucking up. My expectations were just higher after the success of "The Champion." I still adore Carrie... I'm just hoping for something a little more catchy next release...

Not a fan of the video. It has next to no replay value, and adds nothing to the song. I'm especially not a fan of the "live concert" scenes in it, I mean it's the first video of the era and it has the same budget as Church Bells?

it was a simple video but I liked it well enough. Definitely could have had some sort of story with it or something but I think it worked to really make it about her. I think it made sense for where she is at right now.

She hasn't had a truly fantastic music video since "Something in the Water," and her last solid one was "Smoke Break." It's her fourth underwhelming visual effort in a row for me. She's definitely deserving of way better than what her music video output has been the past couple years. On the "Cry Pretty" video, I will say that she looked gorgeous as always and I loved several of her looks in the video, but it went absolutely nowhere and the fact that half of it was a live performance with unnecessary crowd noise over the top of the song is pretty lazy and, like you said, ruins its replay value imo.

Especially when the chart is streaming dominant these days...Shouldn't her team work hard on a video with higher replay value instead of dreaming of (low) download spike from music video premiere?

I thought that this was supposed to be symbolic of the fact that even though she may be going through a lot or not in the best place and singing a sad song, the crowd (the public and media) don't necessarily care or notice because the song may be upbeat or because she may look good/pretty (I think that's partly why the tears are glitter, because they are supposed to be "fashionable"). I think that's why it shows her walking through crowds in those alleys as well, she LOOKS good and no one is paying attention to the fact that she's not doing well. I'm never too good at pulling out hidden meanings so I could be way off on my own interpretation of the video, but I liked it a lot - though that may only be because the Storyteller videos were so bad that I would be happy with anything.

If that's what they were going for, then it wasn't executed well imo. A little dialogue or noise in a music video is fine, but they definitely lowered the replay value for the video by cluttering it up with so much crowd noise over the song, and the rest of the scenes of her off-stage didn't carry the video well enough to make up for it.
