I mean, obviously Shape Of You is a huge song, it was and still is an airplay juggernaut. But what I mean by cultural landscape is that everyone is talking about it for months, it's memorable and the hype never dies down. These kind of hits are Despacito, Closer, Tik Tok, The Boy Is Mine, Candle In The Wind, Smooth, etc.

I absolutely agree that "God's Plan" feels like a non-event, a few months from now it'll be forgotten about, most likely. But I would not compare it to "Shape of You" in the slightest. "Shape of You" made perfect sense as a #1 hit, and literally everyone, of every age group, now knows that song. That's what should make a #1 hit, for me - a song so transcendent and transparent that it becomes inescapable, you can't just not listen to it. No one goes through life, even in this day and age, without knowing most of the #1's from the 80's, for exampl. "God's Plan" doesn't have the same appeal, nor the same effect, and I'm sure it's not one for the ages. "Shape of You", however, felt like an instant classic, I believe it'll be a song people look back on 10, 20, 30 years from now.



Also lol that the biggest thing about "Closer" for me and my group of friends was that it simply should not have been #1. Lol. I only thought that at the time of its reign, looking back now it makes more sense to me. But when it first hit #1 I was like WTF? This??

It's Drake vs. Drake for No. 1 on Next Week's Hot 100, As 'Nice for What' Could Dethrone 'God's Plan'

"Plan" has spent 11 weeks on top so far.

Drake could dethrone himself at No. 1 on next week's Billboard Hot 100 chart (dated April 21), as new single "Nice for What" will debut and challenge his own "God's Plan" -- which has reigned for 11 weeks -- for the top spot.

Let's look at the potential stats for both songs, released on Young Money/Cash Money/Republic Records, and how they might fare on next week's Hot 100; the chart blends weekly streaming, airplay and sales data, according to Nielsen Music.

Based on preliminary totals projecting the tracking period feeding next week's Hot 100, "Nice," released late on April 6 (the first day of the streaming and sales tracking week), should launch with over 50 million U.S. streams and over 75,000 downloads sold in the week ending April 12. It should also draw over 25 million in all-format radio airplay audience in the week ending April 15 (the last day of the airplay tracking week).

"Plan" should sport over 40 million U.S. streams, 30,000 sold and 110 million in airplay reach in the same measurement spans.

When those figures are crunched, the leads in streaming and sales for "Nice" could be enough for the song to replace "Plan" at No. 1 on the Hot 100, despite the latter's notable advantage in airplay.

If "Nice" wins the race, Drake would earn his fifth Hot 100 No. 1 and third as a lead artist.

"Nice" supplanting "Plan" would also make Drake the 13th act to replace itself at No. 1 and the first since Justin Bieber, who did so as featured on Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's "Despacito" and DJ Khaled's "I'm the One" (also featuring Quavo, Chance the Rapper and Lil Wayne), as the former wrestled the top spot from the latter on May 27, 2017. Bieber is also the last act to have replaced himself at No. 1 as a lead artist, when his "Love Yourself" took over for "Sorry" on the Hot 100 dated Feb. 13, 2016.

With "Plan" having debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100 and "Nice" perhaps in line to do the same, Drake could become the first artist to replace himself at No. 1 with both songs having launched at the apex.

Meanwhile, "Nice" would become the 30th single to start atop the Hot 100 and Drake would become only the fourth artist with multiple No. 1 debuts, following Mariah Carey, the leader with three, and Bieber and Britney Spears, each with two.

Regardless of whether or not it arrives at No. 1, "Nice" should easily mark Drake's 25th Hot 100 top 10, tying him with Elvis Presley for the fourth-most top 10s among male soloists in the chart's history.

The official video for "Nice" features stars including Tiffany Haddish, Rashida Jones and Olivia Wilde and also arrived April 6. The track samples Lauryn Hill's "Ex-Factor," which hit No. 7 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and No. 21 on the Hot 100 in 1999.

Highlights of next week's Hot 100 will post on Billboard.com Monday (April 16), with all charts posting the following day (April 17).

I just have to say this because I'm honestly pleasantly surprised: I'm really loving "Nice for What". I'm actually playing it on purpose, which must be a first for any Drake song for me. I don't know exactly what I love so much about it, but I do.

I'm only saying this because I know I have been such a sourpuss "hater" over the last few months because of "God's Plan", but it's just... ugh that song is such a bore, I can't get behind anything about it, and even with semi-regular exposure it simply hasn't grown on me in the slightest, which is atypical, usually you grow to like songs the more you listen to them, as is happening with me and "The Middle". I try to objectively deconstruct the song to figure out what about it could make it so popular (music video notwithstanding since it came out later) and I just can't. That meme-worthy line is nothing to write home about, it has no other memorable lyrics, I don't find it catchy in the slightest, nor is it really that deep or inspirational. But people apparently love it enough to keep it atop the chart for 11(+?) weeks. But "Nice for What"... I can't deconstruct it much either, but I'm loving it. Guess you really can't explain what makes a song work (or not) for you, huh? You like what you like, why should there be a logical reason? I tend to forget these simple things.

I'm rooting for "Nice for What", I really am.

Hell nah, more like 10 in the top 10 lol. Drake has been amazing lately and if he promotes, mainstream (iHeartRadio, etc) plays his album, he will likely be 1,2,3,4,5 on Billboard. I have a feeling this will the hottest summer in music since 2013/14. Also, Ariana!!

I agree, I love songs that are number one for like one to five weeks, but after five, come on. And hopefully the faster popular artists release individual singles I feel like we can slowly start to eliminate these major No. 1 reigns like God's Plan, Despacito, etc.

What is it about BBP that you hate and IGF that you think is a classic? It's somewhat odd to have drastically different views of the two, since both are very similar, uptempo blandish rhythmic/hip-hop songs.

But all the songs you mentioned are kind of like that and pretty mediocre for me. It's funny, I think you were saying before that after many listens and maybe even trying, you still couldn't like GP, but that you instantly liked Nice for What. For me it's sort of been the opposite - not right away, but after a couple listens I started to like God's Plan, but after listening to NFW after a while, it's still not happening for me yet, but I can't say exactly why.

Boom Boom Pow is one of the worst things ever to hit #1 on the Hot 100 IMO. It's such an inartistic, uncreative song with no melody, grating production, stupid lyrics and mediocre vocal performances. I Gotta Feeling is a bit better I suppose but really isn't anything special either. So happy the club boom ended as quickly as it did. It produced some great popular music but some of the worst too. Needless to say, I wish Drake would take the record.
