Warning levels added to mini-profile

Just a short announcement regarding warning levels: We have changed the settings to allow members to see their own warning levels (but not the warning levels of other members; you should only be able to see your own). If you have any warnings on your account, it will appear as a yellow, orange, or red bar in your mini-profile, accompanied by a percentage level.

If you need a reminder on how our warning system works, it is the following:

• 1 warning = 17% warning level
• 2 warnings = 33%
• 3 warnings = 50% (and a 1-week suspension)
• 4 warnings = 67%
• 5 warnings = 83% (and a 2-week suspension)
• 6 warnings = 100% and a permanent ban from Pulse.

One more note: staff has to manually adjust warning levels. A warning expires after 6 months of 'good behavior' (no warnings earned in that time span) but the warning level won't automatically change. So, if you feel like your warning level might be too high and may need to be adjusted downward (this would happen if it's been 6+ months since your last warning), just send a PM to a staff member and we can look to see whether or not one of your warnings has indeed expired.

It should appear on all skins/themes, yes (unless you have 0 warnings, in which case your mini-profile will look the same as it did yesterday).

I went ahead and made the change in the last five minutes, so it's active now.

I was about to say, I'm such a good boy, until I see 33% under my name. I don't think I've been warned since that time I was suspended like 2 or 3 years ago.

There's a solid amount of people where they're not entirely updated. Some have a warning percentage of 17% or whatever but haven't had an offense in three years – it should be 0% but we don't remember to update them when they expire lol.

If we don't know what thing we did that was against the rules or if we're unknowingly doing something, how can we correct it if we don't know?

All this talk about warnings reminded me of something that was discussed in the Pulse Discord server specifically with regards to the ProBoards system of warnings. Au$tin , I hope you don't mind that I am quoting your post verbatim from there because I was originally going to summarize it but you said everything so eloquently and with such great detail that I didn't want to alter that.

ProBoards warning policy is too strict. A warning expires after 6 months. That's understandable. A reasonable amount of time to ensure you really understand where you went wrong and show that you can better yourself. That's about the same time frame for most message boards. However, the expiration is contingent on not getting any other warnings. If you get another warning before that one expires, it resets and you have to wait 6 more months for the first warning to expire and then an additional 6 months for the second one to expire. I'll use myself as an example. I received a warning in January 2018. It should expire in June 2018. However, I received a second warning in April 2018. Logic would be "oh, the first expires in June 2018 and the second in October 2018," but that's not the case. Instead, thanks to that second warning, the first warning now doesn't expire until October 2018. "Oh, okay, so they both go away in October 2018." Nope, wrong again! Only the first one expires. The second one doesn't expire until April 2019.

But, as you all know from General, I received a third warning (I'm still waiting on the explanation for it) this month, August 2018. So, now, the first warning, which should have expired in June 2018, won't expire until February 2019. The second won't expire until August 2019. This new warning won't expire for a year and a half: February 2020!

Now, remember, this is ProBoards setting this policy, not Pulse, so I'm not angry at anyone Pulse related. I'm just so confused as to why anyone would think that's a just and fair system to create it in the first place. It just creates a hole that is extremely difficult to climb out of and is not a fair assessment of a person's actions as they're still being punished for warnings that could have happened long ago.

As an example, if someone gets a warning in January 2018, it expires June 2018. But they get a second warning in May 2018. Now the first warning expires November 2018 and the second May 2019. But they get a third warning October 2018. First warning now gets pushed to April 2019, second October 2019, third April 2020. They get a fourth warning March 2019. First warning now gets pushed to September 2019, second March 2020, third September 2020, fourth March 2021. Finally, they get a fifth warning August 2019. This pushes the first warning to February 2021, over three years after it was initially received, the second to August 2021, third February 2022, fourth August 2022, and finally the fifth warning would expire February 2023, two full years after receiving it. Meaning, they could get permabanned within 6 months after that fifth warning even though the first warning is nearly three years old.

My question is this: Assuming that it isn't in violation of the ProBoards TOS, can a board make their own warning system with a different timeline for the length a warning is there and expires but still using the interface for entering in the warnings? If that is possible, could it just be 3 months instead of 6 months because 6 is a really long time.

If anything, 6 months is too short, but the bigger problem is that you have to "be good" for your old warnings to expire. I'd support a system where every warning takes ~2 years to expire, independent of each other.

But why so long? Making a warning longer than jail/prison time for most criminal offenses?

I think after the third offense, we should consider the death penalty. These are clearly people who are beyond rehabilitation and who we don't want running loose on Pulse.
