Out of curiosity, what caused “You Light Up My Life” to be such a big song? Cross generational appeal - everyone from 8 to 80 knew this song thanks to its multi-format (pop, country, A/C, Christian) airplay. The song was prominently advertised when the film of the same name was released. Although the film version was recorded by another artist, the hit version was by Debby Boone who also had cross generational appeal being the daughter of '50's pop star Pat Boone and the granddaughter of country music pioneer Red Foley. Debby could perform anywhere from teen-oriented "American Bandstand" to older skewing audiences for TV specials from Perry Como to Elizabeth Taylor and succeed. The song was ultimately overplayed and Debby's image was too pure for Top 40 radio. But, it was simply a good song with an uplifting lyric that could be interpreted as an expression of love and/or faith. Check out some of the reaction videos on YouTube by people born long after 1977 and how genuinely surprised they are by the song musically and lyrically as well as Debby's heartfelt and powerful vocal.

Unreal how well ABS is doing. I guess its run will end with the Christmas onslaught.
