For extra number 3, we start to get into actual charting songs. Although, you'll probably know this one primarily because of its sampling usage in a Jay-Z song. Bobby "Blue" Bland was a singer who, starting in the 60s, built a large stable of R&B hit singles while rarely crossing over to pop to any degree. "Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City" peaked at #9 on the Billboard R&B chart and #91 on the Hot 100. It's a masterwork in smooth soul sorrow. EXTRA

2 weeks from the current due date! Very happy with both the initial show of interest and the actual turnout so far. Another extra will be coming later today, too. Let's make this the most fun I've had hosting a rankdown yet; keep those submissions coming!

I already listened to your playlist once and tbh I was a little underwhelmed. However, I don't base my rankings off of just one listen (nor should anybody imo) and I'm sure that the more I play these songs, the more I'll get adjusted to them.
I'll try to get my list in towards the end of the week.

I'm not a Neil Young fan in the slightest, but I've recently come around on this song. And what a coincidence: it was by far his biggest hit. "Heart of Gold" was a US and Canada #1, and it reached the top 15 in five other countries as well. I like the harmonies, the plaintive mood, the chiming guitars, and the Dylan-esque harmonica solos. Another submission has arrived; this one comes from Red. His list caused a few significant movements. He bumped two songs into the top 10, one that has never been there before and another that last snuck in two ballots ago. He also boosted two songs from the bottom ten to the top 30 or just outside it. Now, only the top 11 is in the double-digits of points, and the bottom 10 has all crossed 200 points. The winning margin is 13 points, but the #50 is behind #49 by 26 points. Let's stick with "Gold" songs for extra number 5. This song was on the playlist's original draft, but it wasn't on Spotify whereas all the other songs were, and it's not quite essential enough to warrant telling you to go to YouTube just for it. However, it is great enough to share with you, clearly. "Band of Gold" was a #1 hit in the UK and nabbed a top 6 peak in five other countries. EXTRA

Believe it or not, this next extra was perhaps the biggest international reggae hit of the 1970s. "Double Barrel" was a UK and Mexico #1, and hit #22 in the US. As much fun as this song is, it likely would've been the easiest last place I've ever included in a rankdown, and it's been pretty much forgotten in comparison to the reggae song I replaced it with--"Waiting in Vain", which was actually not as big of a hit at the time of its release. rgreen0625 sent in his ranking this morning, and let me tell you, it was a bombshell. First, I must announce...we have a new #1! By the narrowest of margins (1 point), the previous #1 slips a spot. Related: his list also caused a change that hasn't happened in a long time. The lowest standard deviation now belongs to a different song, and I say "related" because this song is in fact the aforementioned new #1. Other small tidbits: 6 songs have been in the top 10 after every submission since my own. That number was 7 before rgreen's list, and the song which only just fell out, fell all the way from 7 to 11. On the other end, there are 3 songs to have been in every iteration of the bottom 10. This was 4, but rgreen boosted a song from 45 to 38. Enough about songs that are on the list; let's come back to songs that are off the list. Steely Dan is a curious band. I feel like I should dislike them more than I do. They're maybe the most dad-rock, country-club-rock you can get. But they have more of a heart than other bands in that category, and sometimes they just nail down killer hooks and solos that make you forget everything and bliss out, like here. "Do It Again" reached the top 10 in five countries, and funnily enough, it was the #73 song of 1973 according to Billboard. EXTRA

"Soul Makossa" is not only one of the biggest international African hit singles of the 70s, but it could be called a proto-disco record. It reached #35 in America and #17 in France, but the full measure of its success is the dozens of cover versions it immediately spawned that also charted. I can't go without mentioning, of course, that a vocal hook from "Makossa" is the basis for hits by Michael Jackson and Rihanna. EXTRA

Doc Indie Party Rock comes to us with the 8th list (@humanshazam also submitted but we'll wait until tomorrow to talk about his list) and, being the maverick he is, the rankings look quite different after his ballot was entered. That #1 change? It instantly flipped back, with the previous #1 dropping to #3, and the current #1 actually holds the biggest lead it ever has, at 25 points. He also switched out two songs in the top 10, one dropping all the way from 9 to 17. That drop says as much about his ranking of said song, however, as about how tight the race is past the top 7. To wit: the difference between 7 and 8 is the same as the difference between 22 and 31. There are four ties, three coming within that stretch, and the other at 20. This next extra's pop-y-ness is debatable--and either way, we're back to the realm of non-charting songs. But the genre it falls under is Música popular brasileira, and it has over a million plays/views on both YouTube and Spotify, so bear with me. A surprisingly sizable portion of my favorite music from the 60s and 70s comes from Brazil, and in particular, from a scene whose biggest players were gathered together on a compilation called Tropicália: ou Panis et Circencis. Milton Nascimiento didn't appear there, since in 1968 he was only just starting to build his formidable discography. EXTRA

@humanshazam is the 9th entry to this rankdown. The most notable effect of his rankings is the #50 changing hands. Doc started the previous #50's comeback, and shazam completed it. The new #50 is behind by just 6 points, so the very next list could change it back. No matter which song ends up last, though, those two songs are pretty much destined to not go much higher; #49 is behind #48 by 32 points. Some facts about individual ranks: Two users are, at the moment, taking 50s into the top 10. No one has a top 2 in the actual top 2, and the earliest someone is losing a 1 is #22. If you liked Big Star's "September Gurls", you'll probably like this song too. The Flamin' Groovies never had anything in the way of commercial success, whether in their meat-and-potatoes garagey rock n' roll mode or their earnest power pop mode. They stand as one of the best hidden gems of 70s rock, and could be said to have had influence on sectors of pop-minded punk rockers. EXTRA

1 week away from the current due date! Four additional ballots makes nine in total, matching the number I started reveals with for 80s Metal. And I'm sure we can aim for even higher, so get those submissions in (especially, and I'm not implying anything about the results, but if you think you'd represent well for the soul and funk). We may actually be able to start on time for once. Although, if you really want to participate but are not sure you'll be able to make it in with the current deadline, now's the time to think about requesting an extension. We can work out something reasonable. On the other hand, if you're not interested, now's the time to heed the instruction below about liking this post to be removed from the tags, because reminders are going to get more frequent.

The next extra, my pick of this artist's many options, might as well be the obvious choice: the song that gave her a claim to fame in the English-speaking world. You'll recognize Meiko Kaji if you've watched the Kill Bill series or perused their soundtracks, and perhaps we wouldn't have that series without the action-thriller movies strewn across her acting career that inspired them, such as Female Convict 701: Scorpion and Lady Snowblood. The attention her work received because of those Tarantino movie syncs, in fact, led to her briefly making music again around the beginning of this decade. EXTRA

I put a few songs on this rankdown that were released in 1979 but were 80s hits. This next extra is another of that type. The Pretenders announced their presence with a bang on their debut album, bringing lots of groove, attitude, and irresistible melodies. "Brass in Pocket" was a #1 in 4 countries and a top 10 in 7 others, and it made the year-end top 100 in 6 countries. EXTRA

Don't mind me, just going to casually extend this by two days. The new due date is June 6th, 7PM PT. Thought it over, and I'm doing this because 1) I'm now working on the night of the 4th, from 5 to 9pm, and 2) I have a feeling this will help for a couple more people to get in ballots. So, back to 1 week remaining!

aerodynamite becomes our 10th participant! Checking in on our first and last again: #1 has a lead of 43 points. It refuses to break the triple digits in points, and it seems to be running away with the win, but anything could happen with a late surge of ballots. #50 is a little tighter, carrying a deficit of 11 points, and it just passed 400 points overall. Every new submission has brought some kind of change to the composition of the top 10, and this time, one of the songs that had been in every top 10 was the casualty and an early top 10 mainstay was the benefactor. Other songs to watch: one track spent a slice of the early rankings in the bottom 10 but is now in the top 20. Another song has ascended from barely top half to #3 and only 5 points behind #2. The Jamaica-England music connection is deep and storied (the main reason for this being imperialism but let's forget that for now). The Specials--the 'household name' of the "2-Tone" scene--are the result of the reggae-originating ska and punk rock mixing, under the studio guidance of Elvis Costello for this particular album. Their rendition of "A Message to You, Rudy" was a UK and Austria top 10, and also reached the top 30 in the Netherlands and New Zealand. EXTRA

I don't have much to say about the next extra other than it's fun as hell. Also, I sang/played bass for it in my high school's rock band. "The Ballroom Blitz" was a smash hit across 3 years; it was a Canada and Germany #1 and peaked in the top 5 in 9 other countries. EXTRA

When speaking of French pop, the 60s are really the major era. But the 70s kept producing gems, too, as the next extra shows. Françoise Hardy decided to retreat from the sporadic commercial successes she attained in the prior decade, making slight tweaks to her style ramping up the atmosphere, sensitivity, and overall complexity. "Viens" is a great example of this shift. EXTRA

Alright, this'll be the last extra. Carole King was one of the most reliable songwriters of her time. Then, she found her voice as a performer on the album Tapestry. "It's Too Late" was a Canada and US #1 and hit the top 10 in five other countries. EXTRA

2 days left to submit! Narrowed the tag list down to people who have expressed interest and people who have submitted for my rankdowns in the past. Tell me if you'd liked to be added back (and as always, like the post if you want to be removed). Haven't received a list since aerodynamite's; hoping this is just the prelude to a last-minute surge. If you need an extension, tell me and maybe we can work something out. Be reasonable with your request, though--I've already extended once and I don't want to delay this much longer.

Posting to mark that we're at the 24 hour point. Regardless of that particular time-frame, though, I plan to wait for the ballots of a few people who have told me they are working on a ranking/will be submitting (if you tell me the same I'll wait on yours too). I also don't plan on revealing until Thursday at the earliest, since I have to prepare preview/reveal posts and stats. So that deadline has a bit of a buffer, if you think you can slip in a list just after the due date.
