I think Ariana's attempt at marketing is pathetic. Discounting a long-awaited single on the day of its release, massive social media advertising (it's EVERYWHERE on FB), billboards on Times Square and Piccadilly, and that youtube ad... And the song doesn't even manage to reach #1 on its debut. I don't hate Ariana at all, but I think she's overdoing/overpromoting it. You kinda contradicted yourself. It doesn't matter that it didn't debut at #1. #3 is a huge success, higher than any of her singles since "Bang Bang". I think she did everything right. I know you follow the charts. You know that Drake is super strong right now. Yeah I realize that I may have overreacted haha. Debuting at #3 is obviously a succes. I still think that she overdid it, and with her fan base I thought that she would do better.

It would be smart of her to release a second visual (like DW was supposed to have) right around when it peaks or album release week, to boost streaming even more.

There is no way ads' views are counted (well, they may be for analytics for the advertisers/YouTube, but not the charts). Loads of artists have their songs in ads, but usually only 10 or so seconds. Whenever I see full songs it is from a nobody artist. I am surprised she did it but it makes sense why she did Weren’t they counted for Gaga in 2013? I swear I remember Dope debuting in the top 10 from Youtube ads. I think that was because of a performance that was uploaded on her official youtube/VEVO channel(s).

I'm surprised Ariana didn't even reach #1 in the UK, the key market where she has been treated like royalty since the Manchester Terrorism. Dua Lipa and Calvin Harris are killing it on UK Spotify right now so it was not that shocking. Ariana is big but Dua is UK's new IT girl and Calvin is one of the most consistent hitmakers over there.

I think that was because of a performance that was uploaded on her official youtube/VEVO channel(s). Yes, but I remember that the reason it got so many views in one week was from being an ad in front of every video. I can’t find any info on it on Google. Edit: Not really the best source... but noisey.vice.com/en_us/article/rp89vr/is-the-billboard-chart-broken-or-is-one-internet-troll-trying-to-sabotage-lady-gaga-dope-2014“A video clip of “Dope” was used as an advertisement before several thousand YouTube videos. Even though viewers didn’t solely intend to view the clip of “Dope,” Billboard, under Werde’s leadership, still counted the views towards their charts.” Omg I remember being so annoyed by that. "Dope" dropped like a rock on itunes the general reaction was "this is terrible" and then it debuted in the top 10 and everyone was like WTF.

I completely agree about Ariana's marketing being a sound one. Like I told that girl on Twitter (the one who shared the screenshot), we have to keep in mind that the music industry is a BUSINESS, they're gonna do all they can to bring in the big bucks. Even if a lot of this was about getting a high debut on the charts, that also helps with the sales. As for not getting that #1, oh well. This is Drake's year, we have to make peace with that, I know I am (though I only started when "Nice for What" dethroned that insipid "God's Plan", prior to that I was pressed af).

Billboard Top 10 from 35, 30, 25, and 20 years ago: May 2, 199801 01 Too Close - Next (2nd of 5 weeks at #1)02 05 You're Still The One - Shania Twain 24 NE The Arms Of The One Who Loves You - Xscape I forgot about legend Shania's #2 classic. this must have been the time where Too close and then Brandy & Monica later that summer prevented her #1 peak

Nothing Ariana has done for her new single is different to other big releases except the iTunes discount, but lets be real people (fans) would of bought the song regardless so it probably didn't make that much of a difference. I think debuting at #3 behind 2 Drake songs is totally fine and proves that she is in a much better position then she was last era. Especially when you consider Dangerous Woman debuted at #10. I'm not worried she hasn't even performed the song on TV yet. Not sure how much the coachella performance would of helped the song either.

i hope not would be just annoying,it has already spend a long time in the charts, now perfect needs to gtfo of the top 10 too and make space for new songs I personally don’t think that psycho will make #1 because Drake‘s songs are much better in Airplay and Sales Sales: God's Plan: 0.6108 Nice For What: 0.5891 Psycho: 0.4939 Airplay: God's Plan 167.300 Nice For What 69.651 Psycho 80.767 Actually, only God's Plan's airplay is much better than Psycho's. Let's see how Psycho is going to hold on Spotify and Apple Music. It's been a long time (exactly one year ago when TWIL hit #1 vs. SOY/HUMBLE.) since we had a three-way battle for #1. true, but i wouldn’t compare Psycho with TWIL because TWIL was many weeks at#2,Psycho only 1 week at #2

would be nice for psycho to snatch a #1 but is it likely?
the album had a huge stream surge but what about Psycho.
I'm glad J cole will have 3 songs debut top 10. Quality continues to win

After 3 days: 112,635,011 streams for Post's album on Spotify. I think he has a shot at 510M on-demand streams.

Quality continues to win For now I would say it's 30-35% likely... I mean, it's hard af to predict because it has four versions on Apple Music's top 200 (#17, #50, #131, #164) making it impossible to know if it's bigger than Nice For What (#5). Also, last week Psycho had a couple of negative updates on radio, if it stars to fall harder this week, then it's probably not going #1. And there's a huge wild card: God's Plan is much bigger than both NFW and Psycho on radio, is selling slightly more than both and is #1 on YouTube and #2 on Pandora.

Are we going to see history (3 debuts in the top 10) tonight? Probably. Only for it to be re-written next week. I can't wait until Rihanna's next album. She's coming for those 5 top 10 debuts. She has every demo covered and is arguably bigger than ever thanks to her exposure on everything non-music related.

i‘m not a drake fan or supporting his music because he’s not my favorite, but i hope drake will still stay at the top because nfw is better then psycho in my opinion. I‘m not hating on post malone (congratulations was one of my favorites last year :) ),but it’s only my opinion so don’t get offended by that. It doesn’t look good for psycho tho,and i will bet that it won’t make #1

It reminds me on when singles (suppressed, of course) started debuting at #1 in 1990s. After a few, it was no longer exciting - it actually became quite predictable (like these bombs) as labels adjusted their chart strategy.

Idk about you guys but I’m beginnig to get a bit annoyed at just how prevalent album bombs are becoming. J Cole’s album doesn’t even feel that big and yet it looks like he’s gonna get a record breaking 3 top 10 debuts...that doesn’t seem right to me.

I saw a lot of social media posts about it. I just think it’s dangerous to use a singular personal experience to represent a mass population.

Exactly. the popular music world is what is popular to the largest percentage of the country at anyone one time, that could include what you and your circle of friends like, the again it might now.

A lot of us were brought up in a world where the top 10 most popular songs in the US were the top 10 most played songs on the radio (traditionally Top 40). When Soundscan revealed big retail sellers that garnered little to no airplay, it felt weird. I personally don't like album bombs because they don't feel - to me - like culturally mass appeal consensus hits, but you can't argue with the data...
