ABBA announces new musicBy Lisa Respers France, CNN Updated 1:15 PM ET, Fri April 27, 2018 (CNN)Mamma Mia! ABBA is getting the band back together. The Swedish pop group announced Friday on its official Instagram account that an earlier announced avatar plan of the band, dubbed "Abbatars," helped rekindle the magic. "The decision to go ahead with the exciting ABBA avatar tour project had an unexpected consequence," the statement posted on Instagram says. "We all felt that, after some 35 years, it could be fun to join forces again and go into the recording studio. So we did." The reunion, the statement says, "was like time had stood still and we had only been away on a short holiday. An extremely joyful experience!" http://instagram.com/p/BiEl5cslkdR The return to the studio resulted in two new songs, one of which, "I Still Have Faith in You," will be featured in a TV special set to air in December on NBC and the BBC. Fans have long rallied for the band -- whose hits such as "Take a Chance on Me," "Dancing Queen" and "Voulez-Vous" remain popular -- to perform together again. The group, made up of members Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, disbanded in 1982. In 2016 there was a reunion of sorts in Stockholm for the opening of a restaurant owned by Ulvaeus. The eatery was based on the Greek tavern featured in "Mamma Mia!" the Broadway musical that Ulvaeus and Andersson helped create, based around their songs. The band members ended their statement Friday by saying, "We may have come of age, but the song is new. And it feels good." www.cnn.com/2018/04/27/entertainment/abba-new-music/index.html

I’m guessing this isn’t happening. NBC released December specials and I didn't notice anything with ABBA. It was prpbably a fakeout to prime publicity for the Mama Mia sequel a few months later. Disappointing.

Disappointing. Bjorn said in an interview that the songs have been postponed to next year. They were supposed to debut in a "performance" from the ABBA holograms so I'm guessing that's what is causing the hold up, if the "ABBAtars" aren't ready yet.

variety.com/2019/music/news/abba-new-music-september-or-october-1203179417/Abba’s New Music Coming in ‘September or October’A year ago, Abba fans received a totally unexpected surprise when the group announced that they had recorded two new songs for a “Virtual Abba” experience in collaboration with “American Idol” creator Simon Fuller. The project first announced in 2016, and was scheduled to premiere, via digital versions of band members, on NBC and ABC at the end of last year. Then came the delays. Now, Abba’s Bjorn Ulvaeus says at least one of the new songs — which are called “I Still Have Faith In You” and “Don’t Shut Me Down” — will emerge “in September or October.” The group, one of the most successful in history, split up some 37 years ago. Ulvaeus told Denmark’s Ekstra Bladettabloid (via the Associated Press) on Wednesday that “it takes an extremely long time” to make a video with the avatars of the group members, adding “it has been delayed for too long.” In January, the group’s Benny Andersson said in an interview posted on the fan site IceTheSite legal complications had delayed the release. “When that press release [about the TV show and recordings] came out, everything was up and running smoothly, then it didn’t run as smoothly,” he said. “We are still trying to establish the agreement that needs to be done to be able to continue. We are good. It’s the other side, everything that has to be done, everything that has to be drawn. It’s delayed. It’s not our doing.” The group’s rep did not respond to a request to confirm this account. In a separate interview, Andersson said that the group could record a third song as well. “We may do another one when the show [launches],” he said in an interview posted last month. “And that’s gonna take another six – eight months. The reasons we did the new songs was to put them in the new show. Now when this show comes up these songs will be old because they [will have been released when the show launches]. So we said we need to do another one for the show.” He admitted that he had not yet spoken with singers Agnetha Faltskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad about the songs but said he thinks they would approve. Abba are one of the most popular musical artists in history, having sold hundreds of millions of albums worldwide since their formation in Sweden 1972. The group’s simple-sounding but highly sophisticated songs have endured since the group, consisting of two married couples, split amid the breakup of the two couples in 1982. They set a template for pop music that has risen to prominence in recent years, exemplified by the work of countrymen Max Martin (who has worked with everyone from Britney Spears to Taylor Swift and Justin Timberlake over the past two decades) on the commercial side and Robyn on the innovative side. While songwriters Benny Anderson and Bjorn Ulvaeus continued to work together (including a musical, “Chess,” with lyricist Tim Rice in 1984), the four members did not appear together publicly onstage again until 2016.

^ September has passed and October almost over. What could be the legal issues that are holding the new music up? I’d like to be optimistic, but I have a feeling it’s more to do with the new music just not being worthy performed next to the legendary tracks.

ABBA Will Release Five New Songs, With Avatar Tour Expected In 2021 By Bruce Haring July 22, 2020 4:51pm ABBA will have five new songs on the market in 2021, and has pushed back their plans to do a holographic tour to support the music because of the pandemic. The Swedish group – Benny Andersson, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, Agnetha Fältskog and Bjorn Ulvaeus – were originally planning to release only two songs for their comeback. But the long process between the original announcement in 2018 and now has allowed them time to do more than planned. It will be the first new ABBA music in 35 years. Titles include I Still Have Faith In You and Don’t Shut Me Down. In a statement announcing the new songs, ABBA said, “The decision to go ahead with the exciting ABBA avatar tour project had an unexpected consequence. We all four felt that, after some 35 years, it could be fun to join forces again and go into the recording studio.” For the tour, ABBA will appear as their younger selves. “They photographed us from all possible angles, they made us grimace in front of cameras, they painted dots on our faces, they measured our heads,” said Bjorn Ulvaeus. “Apparently a cranium doesn’t change with age the way the rest of your body falls apart.” RELATED STORY 'Mamma Mia 3': Producer Judy Craymer Musing On Threequel With Four New ABBA Songs ABBA split in 1982. They reunited in 2016 at a private event marking the 50th anniversary of the first meeting between songwriters Bjorn and Benny. The long gap between the breakup and today has not diminished the world’s passion for the group. Last month, Deadline’s Anthony D’Alessandro reported that a Mamma Mia 3 could be in the cards down the road. Judy Craymer, who produced the combined $1 billion-plus-grossing feature films Mamma Mia! and Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!, as well as the original West End $4 billion-grossing ABBA musical, said that a trilogy was possible. Craymer said that she intended to develop the musical during the COVID-19 shutdown. “I was meant to have been getting on with that, in my head, during these months. But then I got hit with COVID fog,” says the producer. deadline.com/2020/07/abba-five-new-songs-avatar-tour-in-2021-1202992428/?fbclid=IwAR2gukdDzNkeEUf3J4Ct0qAB1sBwD2dcfSqFk177lpP7MSImaUCDn1NpfHc

^Thanks for posting.
So, they actually performed all of the songs in the show- does that mean they recorded "live" vocals, and that it's not going to be just the album vocals?

I love the songs, especially "Don't Shut Me Down." I can't believe this is actually happening. I never thought I'd get to experience a new ABBA release in my lifetime!

This is such an event. 40k pre-orders in the UK alone already. They are coming for a 200k+ first week in that country.

Both songs are in the top 10 on the UK Midweek Chart right now: "I Still Have Faith in You" at #6 and "Don't Shut Me Down" at #8. No way to tell whether they'll stay in the Top 10 by the time the chart is unveiled on Friday, but they're almost certainly a lock for Top 40 debuts.
If they made the Top 10, these would be ABBA's first top 10 hits since "One of Us" reached #3 in 1981. Their final three UK singles - "Head Over Heels", "The Day Before You Came", and "Under Attack" - didn't even make the Top 20 even though all of them are bangers and "The Day Before You Came" in particular is one of their absolute best songs.

Both of these songs are exceptionally great although I personally enjoy “I Still Have Faith In You” significantly more than “Don’t Shut Me Down”, It sucks that the US Streams for these songs are not really good and I was hoping that they would be receiving much more streams here, I’m guessing that neither of these songs will be able to even debut in the Bubbling Under Hot 100 which would really be a darn shame.

Really? That bad?? That sucks. I would've expected better than a Madonna single that nowadays usually goes that way. Do you think it's because the original fans back in the 70s are not a market that streams music? Hope the album does well. Abba has had such a constant impact in different generations with their Greatest Hits collections and the movies and the musical that I would expect a reaction from younger people too. How about the fact that Cher's Abba album did chart in the U.S.? Maybe that could be a good idea of what could happen with the new Abba album?

I'm pretty sure that their fans from the 70s and 80s still stream music today, Although probably a certain number of them only stream songs from those Decades and that probably has something to do with why the streams of both "I Still Have Faith In You" and "Don't Shut Me Down" aren't notably higher than they should be. Yeah I still expect ABBA's new album to do incredible numbers here in the US as I'm expecting a large number of their fans (myself included) to stream Voyage (album) the week that it comes out, The sales will probably be exceptional as well.
