Who's the Biggest Pop Star Right Now Without a Hot 100 No. 1 Hit? (2018 Edition)
5/1/2018 by Andrew Unterberger
As announced on Billboard on Monday (Apr. 30), the Billboard Hot 100 chart welcomes four new entries into its top 10 this week: Ariana Grande debuts at No. 3 with her new single "No Tears Left to Cry," while J. Cole notches an unprecedented trio of top-tier bows with "ATM" (No. 6), "Kevin's Heart" (No. 8) and "KOD" (No. 10).
The four debuts are particularly interesting, because while they add to the many chart accomplishments of their respective artists -- "No Tears" matches Grande's best Hot 100 debut to date ("Problem" also entered at No. 3 in 2014), while "ATM" one-betters Cole's previous high bow ("Deja Vu" came in at No. 7 in 2016) -- the songs still fall short, at least for the moment, of getting the artists their first No. 1 on the chart. Despite being two of the most commercially dependable stars in 2010s popular music, neither Grande or Cole has topped Billboard's marquee songs listing -- and they're not the only ones among 2018's best and brightest to have not yet done so.
With such artists as Post Malone, Camila Cabello and Migos taking themselves out of this discussion with their own chart-toppers since the beginning of 2017, below is a brief rundown of ten of the artists currently in the debate for the distinction of being 2018's biggest pop star still lacking a Hot 100 No. 1 on their resume.
Ariana Grande
Three albums into her career, Grande has now amassed an impressive nine top 10 hits on the Hot 100 -- including five top 5s -- but has yet to land that elusive No. 1. The Iggy Azalea-assisted "Problem" has gotten her the closest, falling just one spot short at No. 2, while the 2014 superteaming "Bang Bang" (with Nicki Minaj and Jessie J) got her to No. 3, which she reaches again this week with her "No Tears Left to Cry" debut.
Nicki Minaj
Ariana's frequent collaborator -- with whom she shares a pair of Hot 100 top five hits in "Side to Side" (No. 4, 2016) and the previously mentioned "Bang Bang" -- has also come within one spot of the chart's apex, with solo smash "Anaconda" in 2014. But despite hitting the top 10 a stunning 16 times (most recently with "Chun-Li," which jumped to No. 10 on the Hot 100 dated Apr. 28), and despite having more Hot 100 entries than any other female artist in history, she's still yet to reach the chart penthouse.
J. Cole
Cole is one of music's most reliable LP-sellers at this point, having now topped the Billboard 200 albums chart with all five of his studio albums to date, each with first-week numbers well into the multiple hundreds of thousands. But his success on the Hot 100 has been more tempered: Aside from aforementioned three top 10 debuts this week at Nos. 6, 8 and 10 the No. 7-peaking "Deja Vu" remains the North Carolina MC's only other visit to the chart's top 10, meaning he's yet to even scrape the Hot 100's top 5 -- though given Cole's lack of a consistent pop radio presence over most of the last half-decade, his presence on this list may be less surprising than some others.
Selena Gomez
Gomez is certainly no stranger to the Hot 100's highest tier, having scored seven top 10 hits on the chart, including last year's Kygo collab "It Ain't Me" (No. 10, 2017). But Gomez has yet to get higher on the chart than No. 5 -- Revival singles "Good for You" (feat. A$AP Rocky, 2015) and "Same Old Love" (2016) share the title for her highest-peaking entry to date -- and she hasn't necessarily been trending in the right direction; none of her critically acclaimed 2017 singles "Bad Liar," "Fetish" or "Wolves" has managed to peak above No. 20 on the listing.
Twenty One Pilots
The duo of Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun were absolutely unavoidable on the Hot 100 in 2016, with their "Stressed Out" and "Heathens" smashes taking them all the way to No. 2 on the chart, and in-between single "Ride" pulling up not far behind at No. 5. Twenty One Pilots have been relatively quiet on the new release front since beginning their imperial run two years ago, but as one of the few rock-based acts remaining who still puts up massive streaming numbers -- all three of the previously mentioned songs are currently still in Spotify's top 70 most U.S.-played songs of all time -- they'll likely have a shot at flying to No. 1 whenever they return.
Future
Similar to Cole, the rapper born Nayvadius Wilburn has been a Billboard 200 conqueror (five No. 1 albums, most recently/most historically with his self-titled effort and Hendrix in consecutive weeks in March 2017) and Hot 100 fixture (68 entries total, most recently the top 25 hits "End Game," "King's Dead" and "Top Off," both with multiple star collaborators) without ever really threatening the top spot on the latter. The 2017 No. 5-peaking solo smash "Mask Off" has brought him closest, with only his featured appearance on Lil Wayne's 2013 hit "Love Me" taking him to the top 10 previously.
Zedd
Another Ariana collaborator, Zedd has come closest to the Hot 100's apex with his 2014 collab with the powerhouse pop vocalist, "Break Free," which hit No. 4 in that August. It's one of four top 10 hits for the superstar DJ on the chart, including one still in the Hot 100's top tier as of publishing: "The Middle," with Grey and Maren Morris, which hit a new peak of No. 5 on the chart last week.
Shawn Mendes
One of the most reliable young hitmakers in pop right now, singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes has only seen his career momentum grow since first hitting the Hot 100's top five with "Stitches" in 2015 -- but despite returning to the top 10 with "Treat You Better" (No. 6, 2016) and "There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back" (No. 6, 2017), he's yet to better that song's No. 4 peak. New single "In My Blood" is still building, however, and though it's only reached a peak of No. 22 to date, the song is kicking into high gear at radio, moving 20-16 on the latest Radio Songs chart. And with Mendes' self-titled album due at the end of May, the momentum could propel this or another new single up the ranks.
Imagine Dragons
In an era where rock crossovers to the Hot 100 are an increasingly rare phenomenon, Imagine Dragons keep scoring top 10 hits like it was still the height of '80s arena rock. "Thunder" (No. 4) and "Believer" (No. 4) both brought the Las Vegas quartet back to the chart's top five last year -- which they'd previously visited in 2013, with "Radioactive" (No. 3), their highest-charting smash to date -- and they may challenge the chart's top tier again in 2018 with third Evolve single "Whatever It Takes," which has crossed into the top 20 of the Hot 100 and moves 8-7 on the latest Radio Songs ranking. The track has also been one of the five best-selling songs in four of the past five weeks.
Florida Georgia Line
You probably wouldn't have thought to include the country duo on a list like this before 2018, since despite their continued consistent success on the country charts, they hadn't visited the top 10 of the Hot 100 in a half-decade, since the Nelly-featuring "Cruise" (No. 4, 2013). But they made a triumphant return to the chart's highest tier in 2018, even bettering their old peak by climbing to No. 2 with their Bebe Rexha collab "Meant to Be" -- leaving open the possibility that FGL could be the first country act to top the Hot 100 since Taylor Swift still registered as a country artist.

The 2017 version of this article
Who's the Biggest Pop Star Right Now Without a Hot 100 No. 1 Hit? (2017 Edition)
1/17/2017 by Andrew Unterberger
With Ed Sheeran's ascent to No. 1 this week with "Shape of You," who's left that's never hit the top spot?
The returns are in: Ed Sheeran has 2017's first debut atop the Billboard Hot 100, with his new single "Shape of You" hitting No. 1 in its first week. Not only is it the singer-songwriter's first song to bow at pole position on the Hot 100, it's his first song as an artist to top the chart at all -- "Thinking Out Loud," previously his highest-peaking hit on the chart, tapped out at No. 2 in early 2015. ("Love Yourself," a song co-written by Sheeran but performed by Justin Bieber, was also a No. 1 hit, and finished 2016 as the No. 1 song on Billboard's year-end Hot 100.)
With the U.K. star now among the exclusive club of artists who've bested Billboard's marquee songs chart, the question invariably arises: Who's left? Which current top 40 fixtures have yet to experience that magic moment of having the one single that towers above all the others? Let's look at a half-dozen of the biggest names in 2017 pop who've still yet to score one of the 1,061 songs to reign supreme on the Hot 100.
One Direction attend the 2015 American Music Awards at Microsoft Theater on November 22, 2015 in Los Angeles, California. Read More 20 Surprising Artists Who Never Had a Hot 100 No. 1 Hit -- From One Direction to Bruce Springsteen
NICKI MINAJ
Despite recently scoring her astounding 70th entry on the Hot 100 -- tied with Taylor Swift for the second-most entries by a female solo artist on the Hot 100, behind only Aretha Franklin, with 73 -- Nicki Minaj has still to grace the chart's top spot, getting closest with the No. 2-peaking "Anaconda" in summer 2014. With a new album expected this year and another recent top 5 hit under her belt (as a featured artist on Ariana Grande's "Side to Side"), though, she could very easily end up the first artist to cross their name off this list in 2017.
ARIANA GRANDE
Speaking of Ariana Grande -- though the No. 4 peak of "Side to Side" made it the star singer-songwriter's eighth visit to the Hot 100's top 10, she's still never gotten to the tippy-top, with the No. 2 placement of her Iggy Azalea collab "Problem" in 2014 marking her best-charting effort to date. Grande will get at least one more crack at the top spot from 2016's Dangerous Woman album, as she announced earlier this year that the album's fourth single would be the Future-featuring "Everyday."

TWENTY ONE PILOTS
Of course, it isn't like Twenty One Pilots have been flying towards the Hot 100's top tier for particularly long -- before 2015, the Columbus alternative duo had never even ranked a hit on the chart at all. But in 2016, the pair became virtually inextricable from the top 10, spending the majority of the year there with one or more of its trio of megahits -- "Stressed Out" (No. 2), "Ride" (No. 5) and "Heathens" (No. 2) -- though elevating to No. 1 would still be a new altitude for the Pilots.
SELENA GOMEZ
She seems to get closer with every album, and indeed, 2015's Revival featured three top ten hits on the Hot 100 -- "Good for You" (No. 5), "Same Old Love" (No. 5) and "Hands to Myself" (No. 7) -- the first two of which tied for highest-charting single to date. But Selena Gomez, who's been a regular on the Hot 100 since 2009, has still yet to truly threaten to reach that top spot -- though she's gotten closer than her former friend and Disney co-star Demi Lovato, whose best ranking to date remains No. 9, reached with 2008's Joe Jonas duet "This Is Me." She then scored two solo No. 10 hits: 2011's "Skyscraper" and 2013's 'Heart Attack."
DIPLO / MAJOR LAZER
Though he's never exactly been a tremendous force on the charts as a solo artist, it still seems impossible that tastemaker-to-the-stars Diplo could have never even produced a Hot 100-topping single. But whether knob-twiddling on his own or with Major Lazer -- with whom he did hit No. 2, with the Justin Bieber and Mo-featuring "Cold Water," in 2016 -- Thomas Wesley Pentz has never notched himself a No. 1 on the chart, an improbability that seems unlikely to stand through too many more Bieber collaborations.
FIFTH HARMONY / CAMILA CABELLO
Though "Work From Home" was absolutely inescapable in 2016, and the group's off-court drama dominated headlines for much of the year's final months, Fifth Harmony never hit No. 1 in its original five-piece incarnation, with "Work" easily standing as the act's closest shot, peaking at No. 4 last June. But with Camila Cabello now split from 5H, and her own Machine Gun Kelly collab "Bad Things" still hanging around the Hot 100's top 10, will the solo star be able to pull a Zayn and beat her former group to the chart's zenith? The race will certainly make for one of the most exciting chart subplots of 2017.

Nicki. With that volume of chart entries at least one should have been a #1 hit by now. On the other hand, how many of those tracks lasted over three weeks on the chart? Probably less than half...

Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw are bigger in the long term than any artist listed here so far. I'm fairly certain that they are the biggest artists of all time to not have #1 hits.
Pretty sure Kenny Chesney has recently pulled ahead of Tim McGraw.
So that would mean that Kenny Chesney is the most successful artist to never hit #1 AND the most successful artist to never hit the Top 10.
But... are they "current stars". IDK. It depends on your definition. They have each had charting songs in the last year or so.
Tim McGraw is also the only artist to have had a charting song every single year from 1994 to 2017. Really hoping he can continue that trend before 2018 is over. Pretty amazing. If he could get to 2023, it would give "My next 30 years" an whole new meaning. That would also beat Elton John's record for most consecutive years charting.

"current" is in line with the writeup posted as they identified "biggest pop star RIGHT NOW"
Inverse point system aside, some big stars of the past without a #1 include
Bruce Springsteen, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Tom Petty and countless others

Who's the Biggest Pop Star Right Now Without a Hot 100 No. 1 Hit? (2018 Edition)
News
By Andrew Unterberger | November 12, 2018 12:00 PM EST
A half-decade after first debuting on the Billboard Hot 100 with breakout single "The Way," Ariana Grande finally has her first Hot 100 No. 1 hit.
Billboard revealed today that Grande's new song, her blithe ode to her real-life exes "Thank U, Next," has debuted atop the marquee chart in its incomplete first week of tracking, following the song's premiere the night of Saturday, Nov. 3. That beats her previous best showing on the chart, with the Iggy Azalea-featuring and No. 2-peaking "Problem" in 2014 -- and officially erases her name from the list of the biggest pop stars without a No. 1 hit to their credit; a list she had arguably risen to the very top of.
Still, even with the removal of Ariana Grande from its ranks, the pool of major pop artists without a Hot 100-topper is a crowded one. Here is a brief rundown of ten artists currently in the debate for the distinction of being "next" on the ranking of the biggest names without a No. 1 on their resume.
Nicki Minaj
Ariana's frequent collaborator -- with whom she shares a pair of Hot 100 top five hits in "Side to Side" (No. 4, 2016) and "Bang Bang" (No. 3, 2014) -- has come within one spot of the chart's apex, with solo smash "Anaconda" in 2014. But despite hitting the top 10 a stunning 17 times (most recently with her guest appearance on 6ix9ine's "FEFE," which peaked at No. 3 this August), and despite having cracked triple digits with her total Hot 100 entries this November -- more than any other female artist in history -- she's still yet to reach the chart penthouse.
Travis Scott
A rising star for a half-decade now, Travis Scott made his ascent to pop's A-list official this year with the release of Astroworld, the rapper's much-anticipated third album, which launched at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with one of the year's biggest first-week numbers, and debuted all 17 tracks from the set on the Hot 100. The biggest of those, the No. 4-debuting (and Drake-assisted) "Sicko Mode," reached a No. 2 peak on the chart this November -- matching Scott's No. 2 bow as a guest star on Kodak Black's ""ZEZE" just a week earlier -- but Scott's rollercoaster year has yet to scale the listing's absolute apex.
J. Cole
Cole is one of music's most reliable LP-sellers at this point, having now topped the Billboard 200 albums chart with all five of his studio albums to date, each with first-week numbers well into the multiple hundreds of thousands. But his success on the Hot 100 has been more tempered: Aside from debuting three songs in the top 10 during the release week of most recent LP K.O.D. this May ("ATM," No. 6; "Kevin's Heart," No. 8; "KOD," No. 10), the No. 7-peaking "Deja Vu" remains the North Carolina MC's only other visit to the chart's top 10. Given Cole's lack of a consistent pop radio presence over most of the last half-decade, however, his presence on this list may be less surprising than some others.
20 on the listing, while this year's 13 Reasons Why soundtrack single topped out at No. 18.
5. Though second album Trench, released in October, didn't create the same kind of Hot 100 momentum -- lead single "Jumpsuit" has scored the highest ranking on the chart from the set to date, with a modest No. 50 peak -- all three of the previously mentioned smashes are currently still in Spotify's top 70 most U.S.-played songs of all time, and the duo flying to such elevations again in the future would hardly be a shock.
Future
Similar to Cole, the rapper born Nayvadius Wilburn has been a Billboard 200 conqueror (five No. 1 albums, most recently/most historically with his self-titled effort and Hendrix in consecutive weeks in March 2017) and Hot 100 fixture (75 entries total, most recently with three tracks off his and Juice WRLD's WRLD on Drugs collaborative LP) without ever really threatening the top spot on the latter.
It's one of four top 10 hits for the superstar DJ on the chart, and as of last week, he still had has two entries in the Hot 100's top half : "The Middle," with Grey and Maren Morris, which peaked at No. 5 on the chart in April, and "Lost in Japan," his Shawn Mendes collab, which climbed to a new peak of No. 48.
Shawn Mendes
Speaking of Shawn Mendes: one of the most reliable young hitmakers in pop right now, the singer-songwriter Mendes has only seen his career momentum grow since first hitting the Hot 100's top five with "Stitches" in 2015. But despite returning to the top 10 with "Treat You Better" (No. 6, 2016) and "There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back" (No. 6, 2017), he's yet to better that song's No. 4 peak. His self-titled album's lead single "In My Blood" made it to No. 11 this June, however, and "Lost in Japan" is still ascending the chart since being remixed by Zedd in September.
3), their highest-charting smash to date -- and they challenged the chart's top tier twice in 2018 with third Evolve single "Whatever It Takes" (No. 12) and follow-up set Origins' lead single "Natural" (No. 13). Officially released last Friday (Nov. 9), Origins may still launch another Hot 100 contender or two before the year's end.
("Simple," the group's most recent Hot 100 entry, notched a respectable peak of No. 32 on the chart.)

Overall? Nicki (just based off sheer quantity) Current star power? Probably Imagine Dragons or Travis Scott (though I foresee the latter getting a #1 very soon)

Imagine Dragons, they've had like 7 Top 20 hits and they haven't managed to reach the top yet. Poor Radioactive, totally deserved #1, probably could of gotten it too if it wasn't for Blurred Lines.

David Guetta is not a star in the US by any stretch of the imagination.

"current" is in line with the writeup posted as they identified "biggest pop star RIGHT NOW" Inverse point system aside, some big stars of the past without a #1 include Bruce Springsteen, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Tom Petty and countless others Bob Dylan

Nicki aside, I don’t think it’s surprising that ANY of the acts listed don’t have a #1 yet. I’m sure Travis will eventually get one and Shawn could too if the point system swings back into a pop direction within the next few years. David Guetta is not a star in the US by any stretch of the imagination. He’s had five Top 10’s which is more than a few artists on Billboard’s list. ^ I’d say Calvin Harris may be the current biggest act without a #1 of his own, though I guess Billboard is counting his feature on “We Found Love.”

It's basically his song.
