I don't know whether to be happy or scared when we agree on something, Slappy. Although for me RMA was a first time listen and my first thought was 'WTF EVEN IS THIS?!?!?!'

Off topic, but Unhinged can you please take over 1983 ASAP? tiduraes has disappeared and I actually want to send that one. Has some of my favorite classic songs ever. Thanks. Would be gladly appreciated.

Would be gladly appreciated. Unhinged just said that he needed to take a break from revealing this rankdown because of something that has happened in his personal life, then you go ahead and ask him to take over another rankdown. I don't think hosting another rankdown is on his mind right now. Hopefully everything is okay, Unhinged.

Okay I will take the blame because honestly I did not read the previous posts from the last few days at all and I randomly asked after watching the 1983 recap video. So I apologize on that one.

Holding Back The Years Simply Red
This is a song that took me several years to finally appreciate.

50. Sweet Love (78): Anita has an awesome voice and she sings this one very well... This type of ballad has just never been my cup of tea. 49. I'm Your Man (70): This was a hit back home and a personal top 3. I slightly under-ranked it for this RD...it should've been about 15 spots higher, so I'm actually glad this made the top 50. 48. I Didn't Mean to Turn You On (41): I've always liked this one a lot. The music is A+ and Robert's sexy vocals make it even better. 47. Tarzan Boy (10): Booooo. This was a BIG hit back home and a 2-week personal chart-topper, and it's remained a staple in oldies radio stations. I have the 45 RPM, too :) and this was a song that everyone in my family loved. I also liked the longer version a bit more. I assumed I was going to be amongst its top rankers (and Doc Indie Party Rock I was actually its highest ranker ), but I still hoped it could be a top 30 :( 46. True Blue (38): This was likely the first Madonna song my mom really liked, probably thanks to its classic oldie sound. This was a personal top 5 and a top 5 in one of our most popular radio stations -but not THE most popular one, where it didn't rank. In any case, this was such a great 1-2-3 punch for the TB album, although I did rank the other two ones higher. 45. Perfect Way (97): I heard this one for the first time this year during the 1985 RD discussion, so this may have affected my ranking for it. I gave it another chance but it just didn't connect enough to compete with other songs in this RD. 44. Election Day (86): This was a minor hit back home and in my personal chart. It's an OK song to me, but just a bit monotonous as the melody in the verse and the chorus is practically the same. 43. Kyrie (20): :(( A personal chart-topper that I still like quite a lot. I like its dynamics, including the choral intro, the mysterious first verse, to the more euphoric bridge and last choruses. Quite a strong song, representative of 80s epic music (ala Simple Minds, Tears for Fears). 42. Two of Hearts (29): Geez! This is one of the best Madonna-influenced songs of the mid-80s. I love the melody, music, the pre-chorus after the second verse, and the musical bridge. Pure pop bliss in this one! And the 12" was even better! 41. The Greatest Love Of All (21): Wow! A bit surprised that this one didn't make the top 40. I guess it's too pop? I mean, Saving All My Love was much higher in 1985, and I like Greatest miles better... This was a personal top 3 and a minor hit back home in 1986--but it became more popular with time. I'm actually surprised / almost upset that Madonna and Whitney have lost one song each, but Janet hasn't lost any yet 40. Walk This Way (54): This is the type of song I didn't care much for at that time, but it grew on me at lot in the 1990s and I've liked the hip-hop/rock combo ever since. 39. Holding Back The Years (74): Simply Red is one of my favorite 1980s/90s groups, but this song -just like Sweet Love or On My Own- is the type of ballad that is just not my cup of tea. 38. Rock Me Amadeus (32): I've always loved the uniqueness of this song, including the 12" version with the extended Intro and female vocals in the bridge. This was a big hit back home and a personal chart-topper, and a song I still use :) It's worth noting that this was Falco's second big hit back home, as Der Komissar was also a big hit (luckily we didn't care for After the Fire's version). Glad to see it in the top 40!

#40. Walk This Way - Run–D.M.C. Always wondered why Steven and Joe didn't appear in the song's title. I didn't care for Run DMC one bit, but the song featured some great Steven Tyler screaming and had the same lyrics. I charted it for that alone.
#39. Holding Back The Years - Simply Red This was boring, and I never cared for it.. The one I charted that year was "Money's Too Tight To Mention". Much better song with a killer bass line.
#38. Rock Me Amadeus - Falco There are different versions of this song. I didn't like the gold Mix at all. The one I loved was the (Canadian / American '86 - Mix). Combines the best parts of both versions.

I will have to take a break from the reveal today as I just got some very bad news about a family member...reveal will continue when I have time... *hugs* Off topic, but Unhinged can you please take over 1983 ASAP? tiduraes has disappeared and I actually want to send that one. Has some of my favorite classic songs ever. Thanks. Would be gladly appreciated. Hopefully everything is okay, Unhinged . Thank you for your support guys. I appreciate it. Yesterday was a really hard day. I lost my nephew who was just 23 and it makes me feel so incredibly sad but I think if I push forward with the reveal it might help to take my mind off of it a bit. I'm so close to finishing this one that I just can't let it hang there.
Okay I will take the blame because honestly I did not read the previous posts from the last few days at all and I randomly asked after watching the 1983 recap video. So I apologize on that one. I appreciate the apology and I will do 1983, I'm just not sure when at this point because I just launched 1987. Unless we all just want to do '83 first and then move along to '87? My original plan was to start w/1984 and then do 1983 (I had no intention of doing each 80's year - but I'm cool w/it now) but it got snatched from me so I'll be happy to do it.
My luck though I'll launch the new thread and tiduraes will return...lol
Today I will be finishing what I began yesterday (40-31) so the plan is to finish this up by Friday now (though this may change as I learn more about my nephew's funeral...).

Sorry for your loss, U̶n̶hinged. Don't feel pressured to complete this until you feel ready. We understand. Thank you both. I don't feel pressured, I actually am finding it kind of therapeutic right now. Plus I'm at work and can't focus so it's a good distraction for me. If I feel I can't continue I'll stop.

So sorry to hear that Unhinged. Thinking of you and your family and wishing you the best. Re: '83. I'm personally fine with going through to the end of the decade and then maybe picking it up later, but whatever's easier for you. I submitted for the '83 one and can just forward you my list anytime. I knew Stevie and Heart would be the first from my top 10 to go, but these are good enough placements. Both of these albums are my favorite from both, and the singles are as well. I wish Heart would show Never some love once in a while rather just sticking to the two #1s. Talk To Me is one of my favorite vocal performances from Stevie (coked up and all, she looks profoundly 80s in pretty much every way in the video, especially the bridge. I think it's far better than the Belinda Carlisle single Rick ended up recycling it for later. Life In A Northern Town was probably the one song I had no idea where it could end up due to how left-field is, especially for this time period. My first exposure to any part of it was that dance track from the late 90s that sampled the chorus.

I'll wait and see what the general consensus is for 1983. I'm cool w/whatever...
I'm done for the day...hope to continue tomorrow but we'll see how things go...the Top 30 awaits!

So sorry about your loss UnhingedToo bad The Dream Academy is already out. At least it made it to the Top 40. Surprised to see Belinda above Stevie and Heart. “Never” is probably my favorite from them. Holding Back The Years is one of the best ballads in this list. Money Too Tight To Mention is great but the real gem in that first Simply Red album is called Jericho.

First, just want to say that I'm thinking about you and your family right now, Unhinged. Can't imagine the pain you're feeling right now. Take your time with this. I think we'll all understand if you need to take a break. "Walk This Way" was the top ten I was alluding to in the last post. Amazed it even got this far. "Silent Running" was my favorite first listen, and I wish it had made the top 30, but what's done is done.

I hope everybody will be OK. Coping with death is never easy, but it becomes exponentially worse when a young person dies, or when it's totally unexpected.
Anyway, was I the first to lose a #1? I hope not. "These Dreams" is very dreamy, beautiful and a bit melancholy. That's why I love it so much. Martin Page hit this one out of the park.
"Silent Running (On Dangerous Ground)" is great too. You can feel the unease as the long intro builds, and then when the song kicks off, the unease becomes desperation. It's a song that you can't listen to when you're in a carefree mood; that's how palpable the desperation is. And the lyrics are frightening too. It's a song about societal collapse, and it sets the mood perfectly.

I'm 100% sure my and peacebone's 100 is not a legitimate contender to win, but I just want to let you all know how disappointed I am in you people that it made top 30 (especially since peacebone's 1 lost to it ).

My take on 40-31 or wait, Level 42 made the top 30? (Score out of 5, my ranking)
40. Walk This Way (3, 39)---Certainly a one of a kind song that manages to blend rock and rap. Too bad, it's not a seamless transition and it feels like two different songs a time. Fun, though.
39. Holding Back the Years (2, 76)---Sometimes I complain of overwrought lyrics in rock. He's got a good voice, but boy does this song try to rip out the tears.
38. Rock Me Amadeus (3.5, 32)---Not a huge fan of the talking version, but I think the fun translates pretty well regardless of language barriers.
37. Life in a Northern Town (3, 52)---Moves a bit slowly for my taste, but the chorus does have momentum on its side with the instruments and singing.
36. These Dreams (3.5, 26)---I really enjoy Ann and Nancy Wilson. These girls can rock, but I think Never is the slightly better song.
35. Silent Running (3.5, 27)---There are songs that you better appreciate when you review years later. I appreciated the dramatic storytelling in this one.
34. Talk to Me (3.5, 31)---Stevie has an expressive, lived in voice that really sells this one.
33. Never (4, 22)---That chorus builds to an anthemic, infectious pitch as the sisters Wilson and company rock out. I can't go on just running away...
32. Tonight She Comes (4, 20)---I don't think I appreciated this song when it first came out. This rankdown allowed me to realize there's more to The Cars than You Might Think.
31. Mad About You (4, 21)---I prefer this song to Heaven is a Place on Earth, maybe because it sounds a lot like what the Go Gos would have done in their prime?

Rock Me Amadeus - FalcoThere are different versions of this song. I didn't like the gold Mix at all. The one I loved was the (Canadian / American '86 - Mix). Combines the best parts of both versions. Ha!! I didn't chart Holding either -- I chartered Come To My Aid instead :) LOVE the horns and percussion!! And that Canadian/American version was THE version that was popular back home and made my personal chart. I had not heard about the Gold Mix until just a few years ago. No reveals tonight, so here comes a wave of songs that were in my own top 100 of 1986. 96. John Taylor - I Do What I Do (DOC #12) (BB #26) 88. Level 42 - Lessons In Love (DOC #11) (BB #12 in 1987) 83. Ta Mara & the Seen - Everybody Dance (DOC #10) (BB #24) 81. David Lee Roth - Yankee Rose (DOC #7) (BB #16) 74. ABC - Vanity Kills (DOC #8) (BB #91) 72. Missing Persons - I Can't Think About Dancing (DOC #6) (BB US Club #34) 70. Wham! - Where Did Your Heart Go (DOC#6) (BB #50) I Do What I Do and Lessons in Love made small dent in my weekly charts --primarily because at that time I also considered the popularity of the songs in radio stations -- and both were flops. I liked both though. Plus, LIL did become a staple in radio stations at the end of the decade. Oh, my! I hadn't heard I Can't Think About Dancing or Yankee Rose n like 30 years? :o Didn't make my personal chart, but I do remember liking the songs a bit and the videos even more :) Where Did Your Heart Go was a personal top 15. Love the saxophone there.

I love it too and I think the video did wonders for it as well. Page and Taupin also penned the more playful? ‘We Built This City’?!! ..although another #1 as well. When it hit, the media teased Ann that it took Nancy to lead a vocal for them to finally score a #1. Of course, things would be equalized the following summer in ’87 when Alone smashes.

Unhinged . Sorry to hear about your loss. Keep strong. I've had to deal with my own loss this year, but the music keeps me going. Music always brings the spirit up. Especially 80's music. #37. Life In A Northern Town - The Dream AcademyThis song wasn't decent, but you guessed it? I also charted "The Love Parade" even higher. Both made my top 30. "Life...." #24, and "The Love Parade" #21. www.youtube.com/watch?v=UoQvD4rd_j0#36. These Dreams - HeartI loved this band ever since "Barracuda". They jumped on the Glam Rock parade in the 80's and were one of the most successful girl bands on the pop charts. "These Dreams" is a flawless Power ballad. #35. Silent Running (On Dangerous Ground) - Mike & The MechanicsANnother great rocker. This one got mad airplay on KLOS. I liked "All I Need Is A Miracle" more for the pop rock vibe, but this was a great Prog rock jam too. #34. Talk To Me - Stevie NicksNot the biggest fan of this one. Call me back when we rank "Stand Back". I'll put that one, extra high. #33. Never - HeartGreat song. This became an even bigger hit on my charts in 1987. Along with Vixxen. #31. Mad About You - Belinda CarlisleThis one and "heaven Is A Place On earth" are classics. Different sound, from the punky; Go Go's, but still lots of fun.
