ALBUM OVERVIEW: LISTEN LIKE THIEVES (1985) Having swung more toward dance on their last album, producer Chris Thomas brought the band's sound back to a more raw rock sound for Listen Like Thieves. It paid off with improving sales & chart figures (finally getting some love from the UK). Rolling Stone: "going for the jugular – or is that the groin?" ... "INXS forge an unlikely union between the sonic extremism of Led Zeppelin-style crunch rock and the step-lively beat of disco" ... "the album rocks with passion and seals the deal with a backbeat that'll blackmail your feet"

25. Strangest Party (27): I didn't care much for it when first released, but I've grown to like it with time (especially the chorus).
24. Shine Like It Does (36): I only learned about this song a few years ago. It hasn't connected with me, though. I appreciate the more subdued style of this song, but I've always seen it as a song that had unrealized potential but ended up underwhelming...
23. Kick (21): I did like this one. The effervescent combination of horns, percussion, vocals in the chorus was pretty good.
22. Good Times (8): WTF?!! I loved this one when I first heard it back in the day. The first minute is awesome, including that sexy Mary, Mary... with little music behind. The explosive rock chorus and rest of the song made it one of one of the hardest but catchy and effective songs from Inxs. This should have at least made the top 20!
21. Mistify (19): Another one from Kick that i like. More subdued but without being boring. Good to see it this high.

#25: Strangest Party (These Are The Times) This was a first time listen for me. Sounded like 90's INXs, but also seemed very lazy in melody.
#24: Shine Like It Does A tad better. Sounds more like U2, but I did find the chorus pleasant enough.
#23: Kick What I liked about this one, was the NRG the song brings with the horns sections. Always loved the horns section of an INXS song.
#22: Good Times (f/ Jimmy Barnes) This one didn't work for me. Music was alright. I don't care for my ;INXS ,to sound too; John Mellencamp, and Jimmy's vocals didn't do the song any favors either.
#21: Mystify I'm glad all these songs appeared. Means the top 20 has some really great 80's ;INXS, songs in it.

EXTRAS:
One X One Horns sound great. The song is just sorta of there, without any really impact.
Do Wot You Do Love Pretty In Pink. That soundtrack was amazing. There are very few 80's New Wave songs, that I don't like. This one has "What You Need" vibes. I love it.
Laying Down The Law (f/ Jimmy Barnes) More Jimmy Barnes, that I didn't ask for.

ALBUM OVERVIEW: KICK (1987) This is the BIG ONE. I had always liked INXS, but when I bought Kick and played it for the first time, they instantly became my favorite band of all time. Every track is pop perfection, and each one could've been released as a single. Once again, our heroes worked with producer Chris Thomas to follow-up the success of Listen Like Thieves. This time instead of alternating between releasing a funk album, followed by a rock album, (as they had over the past few years) they were able to blend the two sounds together perfectly. Shockingly, when the band's manager played the completed album for Atlantic Records executives, they REJECTED it, thinking that the dance and funk elements would alienate the large rock audience they had cultivated last time around. But after getting college radio to jump on "Need You Tonight", the single took off, eventually going all the way to #1. Rock radio soon followed with heavy airplay of "Devil Inside" & with all of the buzz, Atlantic acquiesced and decided to release the album. According to Steve Huey of allmusic.com: "Kick crystallized all of the band's influences – stonesy rock & roll, pop, funk, contemporary dance-pop – into a cool, stylish dance/rock hybrid" According to yours truly: "The PERFECT album!"

Let's check out these extras.
Guns In The Sky Not too original in the guitar strums, but Michael Hutchence, takes the song to another level, and it makes up with the fierce mini guitar solo.
Wild Life This would be more up my alley. I love the Morrison vibe in Michael's delivery too. The guitar strums are way more NRGetic here too.
Calling All Nations Another great one. You can feel the NRG the second the song starts. The guitar strums ,either make or break an; INXS song. Here, they sound wonderful. R.I.P. Today's Alt music without this kind of guitar vibe.
Tiny Daggers ...And lest's off the night with even more NRG. This song pretty much sums the album's vibe.

i can't comprehend those 2 bottom 10s, i've always loved the energy in this song...i'm quite surprised that the 2nd single from this album never got a music video made for it...i mean, this was the heighth of the MTV video era...so, appears that Daily Motion videos aren't embedding >:(
moving on, we've got another TIE...both of these songs have top 5 rankings, one has another top 10 & only one bottom 10 while the other has 2 more Top 10s with THREE bottom 10s...and our PPPPP drought continues

Not only did those songs tie in points, but also they had the same highest rank (#5, Pastor Daddy for "Taste It" & Aero for "This Time"), so I had to use the 2nd highest rank to break the tie. My #6 beat Mamooshka's #9 to the advantage of "Taste It". With those reveals, Juanca becomes the 2nd poster to clear his bottom 10. I had forgot to mention that aerodynamite was the 1st to do so when his 40 went out earlier. Still no songs from the X album yet & still no PPPPPs (for quite awhile), but after the next few reveals we won't be able to say either anymore. Up next a low standard deviation song that only has ONE Top 10 & ONE bottom 10.

20. I Send a Message (39): First listen and I didn't care for this one at all. This practically doesn't have a chorus... well I guess that pre-chorus intends to be a chorus, but even so it's just very meh. The bit of sax there is isn't enough either. It was just an underwhelming song for me... Whatever they intended to do with this one, they've done much better with other songs... Quite surprised it made it this far, honestly.
19. This Time (29): Good energy and catchy chorus, but could be a bit better. I learned about this one in the early 00s as it wasn't in rotation in the 1980s in our main radio stations.
18. Taste It (33): I wanted to rank this higher, as I sort of liked this one back in the day (although it didn't make my personal chart). However, it just felt a bit short when listening to it again. Kinda needed a bit more oomph overall, although I do like its sensuality. I'd likely have ranked it in my top 30 at another time. In any case, it's great to see my bottom 15 out! :)

#20. I Send A MessageReally hoping this one would have made the top 10. This is one that always gets played in the ;Rock en espanol clubs, down here. "Swing" is one of my favorite INXS albums. BTW, Troy , this isthe MV on youtube. #19: This TimeOne of the more guitar oriented songs from the band. No brass or swing, but still very NRGetic. Love the chorus the most. #18: Taste ItThis was never a favorite of mine. That whole album was toooo 90's for me.

ALBUM OVERVIEW: X (1990)
How do you top one of the best albums of the decade? The band took to the old adage "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", working with the same producer (Chris Thomas) and going for a sound similar to Kick but with more polished songwriting. One slight change was the addition of some blues elements to their sound. They had Charlie Musselwhite play harmonica on a few tracks & record some harp samples that were used in "Suicide Blonde". While this album didn't match Kick either critically or commercially (how could it?), it still did quite well, receiving good reviews & selling millions worldwide and cementing our boys as rock legends.

#17: Listen Like Thieves I really enjoyed this song, the first time I heard it. So the U.S. are dicks, when it comes to INXS music videos? That is just sad. This song was super popular in Mexico too.
#16. By My Side I didn't recall this one too much when it was around, but it sounded just fine when I was ranking it for this game. The mellowness of Michael's voice was extremely mesmerizing and sexy at the same time. The song almost sounded like "Never Tear Us Apart" part II.
The Stairs Not bad. A little too U2 for me. I was almost expecting Bono to make a surprise appearance. I like U2, but I like INXS to sound like INXS, not U2.

well, X finally lost a song...congrats to Mamooshka on his PPPPP...BMS grew on me with repeated listens (as do all of the INXS ballads) but i'm still surprised it is this high
next up, we have a song with THREE Top 10s, a total of EIGHT Top 20s, but TWO bottom 10s

KTD(FDtM) was always one of my favorite early INXS songs but pleasantly surprised you guys liked it so much...it landed about right on the list
so, our next song is the first time we see a song with NO bottom 10s, but alas, it could not garner any Top 10s either, meanwhile, TWO of us will score a PPPPP

you guys liked Bitter Tears more than I did it seems, as i might've overranked it...congrats to Gates & Toyboy on their PPPPPs...forgot to mention that Mamooskha & Toyboy cleared their bottom 10 back at #15
from perhaps the smallest standard deviation to perhaps the largest...one of our most divisive songs has FOUR Top 10s and THREE bottom 10s...someone else will clear their bottom 10 & we clear out not one but our last TWO #40 rankings, meanwhile we will award TWO more PPPPPs

#15: Kiss The Dirt (Falling Down The Mountain) This sin't a bad song at all. I was just not particularly familiar with it.
#14: Bitter Tears Great song. This one barely misses my Top 10 ;INXS, songs . This was one of the last songs, that still felt sounded 100% like INXS. I started losing interest when they dropped the horns section from their songs.

17. Listen like Thieves (23): This wasn't on rotation in pop radios back home, so I only heard it in the 1990s.I like the chorus, but the verses have always felt a bit underwhelming.
16. By My side (15): This was a minor hit in rock radios back at the time, but didn't grab my attention... When I heard it again in one of their compilation CDs, I appreciated the vocals and melody of this one.
15. Kiss the Dirt (9): This was a minor hit in rock radios back home, but it's always been a personal favorite from INXS. I love the instrumentation, and that chorus is pure bliss. The more aggressive last minute gives it a good edge, too.
14. Bitter Tears (17): I actually ranked the Remix, which was the most popular version back home, and I do like it better than the original.
