#4. "Ship to Wreck"
"Ship to Wreck" was released on April, 9 2015 as the second single from How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful. It premiered on the BBC Radio program Annie Mac’s Hottest Record on April 8, 2015 and the audio of the song appeared on the Florence and the Machine VEVO channel later that day. The music video, which was filmed at Florence’s home, was released on April 13, as part 4 of The Odyssey following the previous two videos of "What Kind of Man" and "St. Jude" and connecting video of “How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful”.
"Ship to Wreck" was met with critical acclaim, with critics praising frontwoman Florence’s vocals, as well as the song's production. The song is a folk rock, pop rock, and soft rock song that carries an "upbeat, bouncy sound", in contrast to the lyrics, which speak of self-destructive behavior. The song almost did not make the cut for How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful, as producer Markus Dravs had disallowed Florence to write more songs about water, a recurring theme from Ceremonials, but she managed to include it. In a press release, Florence explained the meaning behind the song, saying: "I was thinking about my own self-destructive side, and how you can make something only to tear it down, enjoy/destroy, create/devastate etc. When you're in that whirlwind, you often end up breaking the thing you love the most." When Florence played Coachella in 2015, she said that the song was inspired by “some time off I had in London where I had some drunken parties and trashed my house and said a drunken ‘I love you’ too soon.”
“Ship to Wreck” peaked at #27 on the UK Singles Chart, #8 on US Alternative Songs, #11 on US Hot Rock Songs and #1 on US Adult Alternative Songs. It also charted in eleven other countries, peaking at #1 in Poland. The song received nominations for Best Rock Video at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards.
“Ship to Wreck” is the song with the third-lowest standard deviation and it never once left the top 5. It spent the early part of the submission period at #3 but dropped to five and eventually climbed its way back up to its #4 position. It received only 3 rankings below #20, and also received 12 top 10 rankings, one of which were a #1. I almost put it as my #1 as well.

Well, my #1 single (not song) has been revealed, 'Cosmic Love'. Im not complaining about it's ranking. I do, however want to address 'NLMG' should've EASILY been Top 5.
I'm glad 'S(SMN)' didn't outrank my #1. Like someone mentioned, that remix was too generic for Flo's sound. I mean, it's Calvin Harris. Lol. His productions are quite mediocre, TBPH. I love the original track, but understood why the remix came about 🙄
Something told me from jump street the #1 song will be obvious. I was hoping to be proven wrong, but it doesn't appears to be that way now. Lol

#3. "No Light, No Light"
“No Light, No Light was released as the second single from Ceremonials on January 16, 2012. The song was the first one written for the album in the band's tour bus in Amsterdam. Lyrically, in the song, Florence is expressing frustration about the state of her fragile relationship and she further tries to keep it together. "No Light, No Light" received positive reviews by music critics who generally praised Florence’s vocals and the drum-led instrumentation. It was also placed on several critics' year-end lists of best singles. Time magazine named this as the 2011 Song Of The Year with Adele’s “Rolling In The Deep,” the runner-up. The magazine explained why saying the song,
Directed by Icelandic duo Arni & Kinski, the music video sees Florence being chased by a man in black body paint, who we see pinning a voodoo doll. The religious and racial imagery of the clip prompted heated chatter on the net with some accusing it of containing satanic and White Supremacist imagery. The song peaked at #50 on the UK Singles Chart, the Irish Singles Chart and #39 on the US Billboard Alternative Songs chart as well as #26 on US Rock Songs. It also charted in Ireland, Hungary, Brazil, Belgium and Australia. “No Light, No Light” is the song with the second-highest standard deviation and it received only 3 rankings lower than #20. These ranking came early on in the submission period and the song had been outside the top 10 until receiving two back-to-back rankings of #5 which moved it to #10. It only climbed from there as Az Paynter ’s #1 ranking moved it to #6 while newpower ’s #1 ranking moved it #4 and it ultimately settled in at #3 – my condolences you two, but well done. And so it comes down to Lungs vs. Ceremonials, which really comes as no surprise.
Both songs have #1 rankings. One song has a total of eighteen top 10 rankings and the other has 20. One song has two rankings below #20 and the other has one. One of these two is the song with the lowest standard deviation.

Ok good, both the top two are in my top 10. 5 v 7.
"What the Water Gave Me" is most of the reason I did this rankdown. Such a magnificent song. I only found a handful of other songs that approached its level of quality, but this list was nothing if not consistent.

Before the final reveals, I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you. So glad you all participated and followed along. Florence is one of my favorites. She is a true and amazing artist and I'm so happy you all took the time to listen and, in some cases, discover some great stuff.

Hope you guys enjoyed!
And now without further ado...

#2. "Dog Days Are Over"
“Dog Days Are Over" is considered Florence and the Machine’s first big hit, both in the US and UK and was originally scheduled for release on November 24, 2008 through Moshi Moshi Records in the UK as the second single from Lungs but was later pushed back for release on December 1, 2008. A day later on December 2, 2008 the single was released in download and seven-inch vinyl format through IAMSOUND Records in the US. The song was re-released into the UK market on April 11, 2010 between the releases of “You Got the Dirtee Love” and “Cosmic Love”. The re-release was accompanied with a new video. When questioned about why there would be a new video, she claimed "The original was so cheap [...] It was a video camera in a forest, with my dad and Marks & Spencer sandwiches." Original followed by re-release shown above. This harp-based track is about suddenly finding happiness and disbelieving that it’s actually there. “Dog Days Are Over" was recorded with no instruments in a studio the "size of a loo". The song was inspired by a giant text installment titled "Dog Days Are Over" by artist Ugo Rondinone, which Florence used to see every day, riding her bike over Waterloo Bridge. The song was produced and mixed by James Ford of Simian Mobile Disco and The Last Shadow Puppets, famous for producing for the likes of Bloc Party and the Arctic Monkeys. He is also credited as playing piano and guitar on the record. On December 6, 2008, "Dog Days Are Over" debuted at #89 on the UK Singles Chart. The following week it dropped one place to #90 before dropping out of the top 100. It then re-entered the chart a month later on January 17, 2009 at #93 before dropping out of the chart again. Approximately four months later the single made another re-entry on May 23, 2009, this time at #91. Following performances on Top of the Pops, Jools Holland and uses in television advertisement for Slumdog Millionaire and Eat, Pray, Love, "Dog Days Are Over" began to receive increasing amounts of digital downloads, despite not having been re-released. On January 10, 2010, "Dog Days Are Over" re-entered the UK Singles Chart at #23, marking its official peak. Following the single's re-release, it re-entered the UK Singles Chart at number 34 on April 4, 2010. The single peaked at #21 on US Hot 100, #1 on US Adult Alternative Songs, #11 on US Adult Top 40, #8 on US Adult Alternative Songs, #9 on US Hot Rock Songs and #4 on US Dance Club Songs, thanks to the Pitron & Sanna remix primarily. It also charted in seven other countries. “Dog Days Are Over” spent its entire run within the top 5 as it received only 2 rankings below #20. For a while, some songs looked to overtake it, but near the end, there was no catching up to its #2 spot. Its nearly 80 points above the #3 song while only 17 points behind #1. It received 18 top 10 rankings including a #1 – sorry for your loss rgreen0625 . One of those rankings lower than #20 was a #45 – congrats Glove Slap on FINALLY clearing your bottom 5 that’s what you get for being severely wrong Total Points: 834 Standard Deviation: 9.42Average Ranking: 8.05 Rankings:
#1. "Shake It Out"
“Shake It Out" is one of the band’s most successful songs to date and was the first official single from Ceremonials. The song was digitally released in Australia on September 14, 2011, and it was available in the United States on October 19. It had its radio debut on XFM on September 14, 2011 in the United Kingdom. "Shake It Out" is a gothic pop and rock song with gospel elements which contains organs, bells and tambourines as its main instrumentation. The song received acclaim from music critics who praised Florence’s vocals and its anthemic nature. Florence revealed that the song was written within an hour and according to her it talked about shaking the regrets and the things that were haunting her. Voted as “2012 Track of the Year” by NME magazine, the song was favorably received. On the Triple J Hottest 100 list, "Shake It Out" was ranked at number thirteen. On the Slant Magazine's year-end list of Best Singles of 2011, "Shake It Out" was ranked at number thirteen. The uplifting yet mournful sound is matched by lyrics depicting twisted clichés. The song was written whilst Florence Welch was suffering from a hangover:An accompanying music video for the song premiered on October 19, 2011 and it was directed by Dawn Shadforth. It showed Welch attending an old party in England, evoking references to Eyes Wide Shut. It received acclaim from critics who praised its imagery and compared it to videos by Annie Lennox and Madonna. “Shake It Out” peaked at #12 on the UK Singles Chart, #72 on US Hot 100, #1 on US Adult Alternative Songs, #20 on US Adult Top 40, #11 on US Alternative Songs, #9 on US Hot Rock Songs and #4 on US Dance Club Songs through a Benny Benassi remix primarily. It also charted in eleven other countries. "Shake It Out" was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the 55th Grammy Awards. As you might have guessed, this is the song with the lowest standard deviation – no other song was lower than a 7. There was really no catching up to this one. There were a handful of times when it was not at #1 but then it was just close behind at #2. It received only one ranking below top 10 and one ranking below top 20. But it also received 20 rankings within the top 10 – six of which were #1 rankings. Congrats to Tim Zach Daryl the Beryl Sambalada Super Rose Bros. Right next to Only If For a Night it is a perfect song. Every acapella wannabe bitch and he-bitch my freshman and sophomore years was singing that song, it's tainted forever. The right song won, and I am pleased to have done God's work in making sure that the other one didn't. Thanks for hosting Albie!

Pretty sure there’s either an error with the averages or the points. There’s no way a difference in averages of over 2 only gives a 17-point difference, or vice-versa. Still, this was a great top 2, thanks for hosting this!

Shake It out - Benny Benassi Remix is one of my favorite remixes. Upon release I played it nonstop at the gym, it was like pressing a turbo button.
Listening to the HBHBHB album again, I rediscovered how much the beautiful Various Storms & Saints means to me.

I'm content with 'SIO' being #1, especially since I do remember the label dropping it on my bday 😊
While I did enjoy this & most of the songs from the list, none of them will ever compare to the song that made me fall in love with Florence. That is the lovely 'Hurricane Drunk'. 😍

How did Ship to Wreck top What Kind of Man?! This rankdown feels like the Twilight Zone. And how did No Light No Light top most of the top 10? It's an epic song (especially with that massive note in the bridge) but... What The Water Gave Me is just chills in musical form. smh

YES My #1 is the #1! Dog Days Is Over is a classic but once Ceremonials came out, it became forgotten. As I said when I sent in the rankdown, the 1-2-3-4 of the first four songs on that album is pure perfection and I'm glad all 4 made the top 10 (I think).
I'm also here for a Tori rankdown. As long as all of her albums are represented. I find Scarlet's Walk onward tends to be forgottten in favour of her early stuff.

The versatility of this song is just on a whole other level. LOVE! I can't think of another song with such a different remix where both are on such levels of perfection as Shake It Off. The original is perfect. The Weeknd remix is perfect.
