BTS Scores First Hot 100 Top 10 for a K-Pop Group & Its First No. 1 on Digital Song Sales Chart With 'Fake Love'
News
By Gary Trust | May 29, 2018 2:46 PM EDT BTS
BTS joins PSY as the only K-pop acts to have hit the Hot 100's top 10.
Superstar Korean boy band BTS' "Fake Love" launches at No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (dated June 2), marking the first Hot 100 top 10 ever for a K-pop group.
As previously reported, parent album Love Yourself: Tear debuts as BTS' first No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, where it's also the first No. 1 for an album in the K-pop genre.
BTS breaks its own record for the highest-charting Hot 100 hit for a K-pop group, passing its "MIC Drop" (featuring Desiigner), which reached No. 28 in December.
Only one K-pop act other than BTS has charted top 10s on the Hot 100: South Korean rapper/singer PSY, whose smash "Gangnam Style" peaked at No. 2 for seven weeks in 2012 and whose "Gentleman" hit No. 5 in 2013.
Further, "Fake Love" is the first K-pop song to debut in the Hot 100's top 10, besting PSY's "Gentleman," which started at No. 12.
"Fake Love," which BTS performed on the Billboard Music Awards May 20, is likewise BTS' first No. 1 on the Digital Song Sales chart, where it opens with 29,000 downloads sold in the week ending May 24, according to Nielsen Music. It's the first No. 1 on the chart for a K-pop group and the second leader for any K-pop act: PSY's "Gangnam Style" spent six weeks atop Digital Song Sales in 2012. BTS earns its second Digital Song Sales top 10, after "MIC Drop," which hit No. 4.
(Notably, "Fake Love" leads with the lowest sales total for a Digital Song Sales No. 1 since Jan. 1, 2005, when Green Day's "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" reigned with 21,000. As previously reported, download sales continue to drop, as streaming surges.)
On Streaming Songs, "Fake Love" starts at No. 7 with 27.4 million U.S. streams in the week ending May 24, arriving as the group's first top 10 on the tally. The act hit a prior No. 37 high with "DNA" last October.
"Fake Love" is also making inroads at pop radio, as it's bubbling under the mainstream top 40-based Pop Songs airplay chart. KJYO Oklahoma City leads all reporters to the survey with 62 plays for the song through May 27, followed by KROI Houston (36) and WEZB New Orleans (22).
Atop the Hot 100, Drake's "Nice for What" returns to No. 1 for a fifth total week on top.
All charts will update on Billboard.com Wednesday (May 30).

Still we get "Yes Indeed". What is that CRAP? Is this what hip-hop fans and/or old people felt in 2010 when songs like Blah Blah Blah were debuting in the top 10? lmao I love "Blah Blah Blah". It was very much in line with Hip-Pop music at the time.

^ Honestly love Blah Blah Blah too and pretty much everything 3Oh!3 did in 2009-10.
I don't think Yes Indeed is terrible per se but it is a bit annoying that Drake is putting his name on boring artist's boring songs, like seeing that his name alone gets a song to the top 10 it's be cool if he picked an actually good song.

Yikes, 29000 sales and you're #1 on downloads?
I miss the days when songs would hit 6 or 7 million in sales.

I still think Drake need a damn break Yes Indeed sucks
I could care less about BTS
Only redeeming things about for this week's top 10 is Boo'd Up's entry and NTLTC hanging in at #9

Yes!! Boo'd Up reached the top 10!
I don't care about Yes Indeed. If Drake wasn't in that song, Yes Indeed wouldn't hit the top 10.

Fake Love is gonna drop like a rock next week, these k-pop fans are all about big opening weeks but don't care about longevity.

Whoa at 29k being enough to get #1 on the Digital Sales chart. Under 10k for #1 before the end of the year is looking likely.

It's a nice achievement, but it isn't something groundbreaking like Despacito which managed go #1 for 16 weeks despite being mostly Spanish. Hell, Psy was the first k-pop artist to get a Top 10 on the Hot 100 and Gangnam Style did pretty damn well in a world before streaming.

Drake - 170 charting singles = 3 hits "Hotline Bling", "One Dance"... what's the third one? Not you giving into that post but also forgetting the past 2/3 #1s God's Plan and Nice For What.

Please tell me this is a joke Hotline Bling, One Dance and God's Plan are the only HITS, and by HITS I mean WW smashes (not only US hits). Everything else, just weekly or monthly hits. Edit: Adele's Someone Like You, Rolling In The Deep, Hello and Set Fire To The Rain are bigger and more epic than his 2301440 singles. I really don't hate Drake, I have 20/30 songs on my playlist, but he doesn't deserve this level of success. The Hot 100 measures US activity not WW activity.

I have never heard of #6 or #8. I only like three songs in the whole top ten :( How is Boo'd Up so high? Not top 20 on iTunes and just reached the top 100 on Spotify for the first time at #99. Also not really doing anything on radio. All Apple Music? It has very high YouTube streams.

Yes!! Boo'd Up reached the top 10! I don't care about Yes Indeed. If Drake wasn't in that song, Yes Indeed wouldn't hit the top 10. Honestly it probably wouldn't have hit the top 40.

I don't care about Yes Indeed. Drake doesn't release Scorpion yet he already have 6/7 Top 10's. Boo'd Up is somehow of a jam, hope it gets Top 5. BTS Top 10? Those YouTube users who were wishing BTS in Top 10 were singing their hallelujahs now, as they now see BTS in Top 10. Cheers for them. And yeah, congrats to BTS too for their first Top 10.

LOL Anyway - a lot of the Beatles tracks for example - that never charted on the Hot 100 - in may ways are bigger than some of their singles - would have been huge hits under streaming and digital rules Drake is a big artist in the 2010s but just because the stats are mounting does not mean Drake is bigger or not as big as artists from prior eras. If this really was a factor - let's coronate the Glee Cast as the biggest Hot 100 act in history and be done with it - LOL If digital sales, streaming and a Hot 100 that allowed album tracks to chart had existed in the Beatles' era, without a doubt they would have had more #1 hits, top 10 hits, and whole albums of theirs would have been downloaded and streamed in high numbers, giving them even more entries on the Hot 100.
