I think every top 10 this decade has been mostly rhythmic though. It's quite a broad category, it covers everything from like Adele to 6ix9ine.

BTS Becomes First K-Pop Act With Two Hits on the Pop Songs Chart as 'Fake Love' Debuts


The song follows 'MIC Drop' featuring Desiigner, which reached No. 25 on the radio airplay survey.

Superstar South Korean boy band BTS becomes the first K-pop act to have tallied multiple hits on Billboard's Pop Songs radio airplay chart, as "Fake Love" debuts at No. 38 (on the ranking dated June 16).
The song follows BTS' "MIC Drop," featuring Desiigner (and remixed by Steve Aoki), which became the first song by a K-pop group to reach Pop Songs; it peaked at No. 25 on Jan. 27.

Only one other K-pop song has hit Pop Songs: rapper PSY's "Gangnam Style" danced to No. 10 in 2012.


The Pop Songs chart, which began in 1992 (and in 2017 celebrated its 25th anniversary), measures total weekly plays, as tabulated by Nielsen Music, among its reporting panel of 158 mainstream top 40 stations.

The chart honors continue for BTS, as "Fake Love" parent album Love Yourself: Tear became the first K-pop set to hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums survey (dated June 2). The same week, "Fake Love" launched at No. 10 on the streaming-, sales- and airplay-based Billboard Hot 100 songs chart, marking the first top 10 on the tally for a K-pop group.

Radio Disney led all Pop Songs reporters with 86 plays for "Fake Love" in the week ending June 10, according to Nielsen Music, making it the channel's most-played song in that span. KROI Houston followed with 44 plays.

Consistent BTS champion KJYO Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, contributed 29 plays for "Fake Love" last week. "The passion that fans have for BTS is one that I've never seen with any other artist before," program director JJ Ryan recently mused on the Billboard Chart Beat Podcast. "The fans are there in huge numbers. It's definitely a phenomenon. It's BTS' world and we're just living in it."


As previously reported, Post Malone earns his first Pop Songs No. 1, as "Psycho," featuring Ty Dolla $ign, rises 2-1, while taking over atop the Hot 100.

Plus, Taylor Swift tallies her 16th Pop Songs top 10, as "Delicate" climbs 11-10. Swift ties Bruno Mars and Usher for seventh place among acts with the most top 10s; Rihanna leads with 30, followed by Maroon 5 and P!nk (19 each), Justin Timberlake (18) and Mariah Carey and Katy Perry (17 each).

All charts will update tomorrow (June 12) on Billboard.com.

Is it consensus that Drake will absolutely take over #1 on the H100 with new stuff after having such a heavy profile with his current songs for awhile now?

I guess I feel like at some point, maybe soon, there's going to be a burn/shift and it's not going to be a given for him.

I'm skeptical (beyond the initial and inevitable album bomb) until I hear the music.

I think of their is a standout track that everyone loves (or even track #1) that gets more plays than the other songs, then it could be a contender for #1.

I wouldn't be surprised if he hits hard during release week and a standout song debuts on top. But will it last?  It's just that almost any hip hop act can attest to the fallout that happens after a mammoth run atop the charts, and it's often pretty harsh. That's what's in the back of my mind.

Yeah agreed. Remember how much burn out there was for him a year and half or so ago around the time that Passionfruit underperformed and that other single he released utterly bombed?

Personally I could totally see I Like It holding down the top of the charts for a while during summer, though there’s a good chance one of Drake’s songs will bump it off the top for a week once the album drops.

^I think Girls Like You will drop next week as sales go down and streaming is relatively steady. It will need radio to pick up to rebound.

I think about 50 Cent in the 00s. Two huge eras, absolutely owning those years with a midas touch... and then the 3rd album had a sharp decline in hits and sales, and that was pretty much that.

And then pop has plenty of examples where many peoples' assumptions and expectations were completely bloated by prior successes, and those first singles didn't even challenge for #1 and subsequent hits were suddenly hard to come by.  It just happens.

Drake may be ok for now given that his peak wasn't in his first two eras, that tends to make a difference in longevity.

Honestly not seeing any standout track from Scorpion's release debuting at no 1. Nice for What is still gaining on radio so unless that standout track has Gods Plans first week streaming numbers, that airplay advantage will be too much to overcome

Did market conditions start to be so abruptly different in mid-1995 with the first top ten debuts, or were sales points (this seemed mainly to drive the high debuts) somehow mitigated the first few weeks and then a rule change in mid-1995 allowed the "true" sales to flood in from week one and enable the high debuts?

But otherwise your comparison makes sense to me. The component charts aren’t aligning very closely lately which is similar to the mid-late 90s.

It did seem though that hip-hop started to be really huge and hit the mainstream by the 90s and that this was most heavily felt through album and single sales, but that top 40 didn't play it in full force because they are always behind and conservative when it comes to taking on new styles and genres and hip-hop might have felt a bit too edgy and abrasive for them.

So basically, you're worried that Scorpion could become like another "More Life"?

I might have worried about that myself. But given the incredible presence, longevity, and debut power that Drake has shown us in 2018, I wouldn't worry about that too much at all right now. 

If anything, Drake's shaping up to give us another "Views" type era. 

It's pretty incredible and bizarre. It pretty much seems as if that brief seven month break between "Signs" and "Scary Hours" was enough to get people to "miss" him, and re-invigorate his career. 

Another interesting thing about "More Life" (which is a "playlist") is that if you compare it to "Views" or "Take Care" it was a big disappointment. But if you compare it to WATTBA and IYRTITL (the ones labeled "mixtapes"), it's a big step up. So there may be more to it than just the label. It could be indicative about what kind of promotion goes into it.

It's because labels would wait for a song to already be big on radio before they released it as a single. 

And Billboard didn't count songs on the Hot 100 unless they were already released as singles. 

So in actuality, most of those songs were already very popular before they debuted.
