Billboards Artist of the Decade, imo is the highest honour an act can receive for chart performance, and I've been really obsessed with it since last year so im sharing this with you guys so I can at least have someone else to obsess over it with As per billboard last year, the top contenders for the 2010s are: Taylor Swift, Adele, Drake, Justin Bieber, Rihanna and Bruno Mars Other than Daniel's hot 100 2010s charts, we dont really know the formula/weighting method for the AOTD list so I'm just going to use the Year End lists since those are what Gary and Trevor referenced heavily on the chart beat podcast last year Here, an excerpt from the 2009 AOTD article: "these are the 20 music stars with the best performance on the Billboard 200 albums chart and the Hot 100 over the last ten years." Seeing this, im not really sure why chart fans talk about tour grosses when discussing AOTD. I've searched everywhere, and the only time they were ever referenced was in 2014 when 1D were the Top Artists that year. Okay so first, the AOTD for the past decades 1980s ; either Madonna or Prince, been looking for the bb article with this but no luck 1990s ; Mariah Carey 2000s ; Eminem Also, the top artists on the year end charts for each year since 1981 1981; REO SPEEDWAGON 1982; GO-GO 1983; MICHAEL JACKSON 1984; LIONEL RITCHIE 1985; MADONNA 1986; WHITNEY HOUSTON 1987; BON JOVI 1988; GEORGE MICHAEL 1989; NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK 1990; NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK 1991; MARIAH CAREY 1992; GARTH BROOKS 1993; GARTH BROOKS 1994; ACE OF BASE 1995; TLC 1996; ALANIS MORISSETTE 1997; LEEANN RIMES 1998; USHER 1999; BACKSTREET BOYS 2000; DESTINYS CHILD 2001; DESTINYS CHILD 2002; NELLY 2003; 50 CENT 2004; USHER 2005; 50 CENT 2006; CHRIS BROWN 2007; AKON 2008; CHRIS BROWN 2009; TAYLOR SWIFT
Next, I'll be detailing the Year End charts for the 2010s with the top 6 contenders

Dissecting the contenders 1. Taylor Swift - Shes the artist with the most years in the Top Artists top ten. Using an inverse point system , which I do realise is not how the AOTD will be calculated, she comes out on top, with a sizeable lead over second place, Drake. Shes been the Top Artist once, but has also been rhe Top 200 albums artist thrice, same as adele. Taylor has been consistent asf
2. Adele - Only one to be the Top Artist more than once this decade. She did it three times with the strength if her blocbuster albums, which outperformed more or less 2x the closest runner up in each year. Her only shortcoming is these huge breaks she takes between releases, causing her to miss the 2014 Top Artists list and rank the lowest in 2013, 2015 and 2017

3. Rihanna : Rih started out really strong in the first half of the decade, straight up dominating the hot 100 but not doing quite as well on the top 200. She stayed in the top ten for 4 consecutive years including a no 2 ranking, twice in 2011 and 2012 behind the almighty Adele but shes really fallen behind since 2014 as her music output kind of dwinled compared to her previous years
4. Drake : As streaming increasingly becomes the dominant form of music consumption in this late half of the decade, Drake has risen to heights on the charts that no one in their right mind could predict way back since Best I Ever Had. We all know him as the hot 100 monster now but his success on the top 200 shouldnt be overlooked. Since 2015, hes ranked in the top 2 of the Top 200 artists, helped by the 5 albums/mixtapes/playlists/whatever that he juggles on that albums chart all year round. Hes never topped the Top Artists list but neither did Eminem and we saw how that turned out

5. Justin Bieber: Didnt really consider him a serious contender even when I heard the chart beat podcast until I compiled the Top Artists table. Hes been in the Top Artists top ten for 5 years now, the same as Drake. Suprisingly, it seems like his rankings on the Top Artists list is majorly fueled by his performance on the top 200 albums chart
6. Bruno Mars ; Hes pretty much the male Adele on the charts, except kind of wayyy less successful. Even though he's been the Top Artist once and made the top 2 last year, he really lacks the consistency to be a real contender
7. Katy Perry; Wasnt listed by billboard as a contender but out of respect for the heavenly bop that is Teenage Dream, i thought she deserved a mention

So the two questions I have for you are; 1.Who do you think is going to win? 2. Who do you think deserves to win?
My answer: 1. Adele/Taylor 2. Drake

Drake will win h100 of the decade, but it will be hard for him to snag artist of the decade. Maybe if scorpion and his next album are colossal smashes...

A thread was already created for this topic a while ago that already addressed a lot of the contenders/issues discussed here (I tried doing a quick search for it but couldn't find it, and I don't have time to go digging for it now). I also had been tracking the year-end artist positions and posted some of them there, but not in as much detail as it is here.
The overall year-end artist chart didn't start to be compiled until 1981 (not sure what the source is for Kenny Rogers in 1980) and Billboard didn't compile a decade-end artist chart for the '80s, but they did something that I think was called the "Diary of a Decade" which I think was a fan survey which Madonna topped.
As for the touring numbers (as well as social media activity and streaming), Billboard didn't start including those for the year-end charts until 2011, so that obviously didn't factor into previous decades, but they probably will for this decade.

Yeah, it's Drake. Not sure what Billboard will say.
Still weird to me that Eminem was named in the 2000's. Does anybody know where Eminem would be listed for Hot 100 artists in the 2000s? I feel like he might not even be Top 10. I know that Usher, Beyonce, Nelly and Kanye would be above him.

The Artist of The Decade would not be JUST the Hot 100
Even in the last 4 years, Eminem has been in the top 100 every week, so he should rank pretty high

1990s was nice because it seems like the one decade where albums lined up with the Hot 100 and everybody agreed on the artist of the decade. But Drake's lead over Rihanna and Taylor Swift is wider than Mariah's lead over Boyz II Men or anybody else in the 1990/s
What even goes into this list other than Hot 100 data? Is it only album sales? Or is it full BB200 data? If it's full BB200 data, that would be problematic since individual track streams would be counted twice for songs from big albums. And only once for loose tracks like God's Plan.
It's going to look really weird if/when they name somebody other than Drake all because of album sales, in a time where sales as a whole are becoming so irrelevant. And then around the exact same time they shut down iTunes completely.
Oh well, at least this is the very last decade we'll ever have to worry about inconsistency like this. In the 2020's, the most streamed artist will almost certainly be the artist of the decade.

I don't know how each component is weighted when they're added together, but it seems like it most closely resembles the album charts.

The Social 50 is the Twitter mentions
Hot 100, BB200 and Artist 100 are the 3 biggest charts that Billboard promotes at the moment

Shawn Mendes Returns to No. 1 on Billboard Artist 100 Chart
6/6/2018 by Xander Zellner
Shawn Mendes surges from No. 8 to No. 1 on the Billboard Artist 100 chart (dated June 9) to become the top musical act in the U.S. for the second time, as his new self-titled LP debuts atop the Billboard 200 with 182,000 equivalent album units, according to Nielsen Music.
The Artist 100 measures artist activity across key metrics of music consumption, blending album and track sales, radio airplay, streaming and social media fan interaction to provide a weekly multi-dimensional ranking of artist popularity.
Mendes' third LP earns the pop singer-songwriter his third straight No. 1, while he becomes the third-youngest artist to have notched three No. 1 albums (after Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus). Meanwhile, the set's lead single, "In My Blood,"leaps 20-11 on the Billboard Hot 100, hitting a new peak. It also becomes Mendes' fifth top 10 on the Radio Songs chart, where it lifts 11-10.
Mendes previously topped the Artist 100 in October 2016, when his sophomore album Illuminate debuted atop the Billboard 200.
Pusha T re-enters the Artist 100 to a new No. 5 peak, as DAYTONA arrives at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 (77,000 units). The rapper previously spent a week on the Artist 100, at No. 76 in January 2016.
Elsewhere in the Artist 100's top five, K-pop kings BTS dip to No. 2 after becoming the first act that records primarily in a language other than English to lead the list; Post Malone descends 2-3; and Drake drops 3-4.
Among other Artist 100 moves, J Balvin surges from No. 55 to No. 16, hitting a new peak on the strength of his new set Vibras, which opens at No. 1 on Top Latin Albums and No. 15 on the Billboard 200 (22,000 units).
Plus, Snow Patrol earns the Artist 100's highest debut, at No. 72, as the rock group's Wildness arrives at No. 5 on Top Rock Albums and No. 49 on the Billboard 200 (11,000 units).

I have a feeling because of Drake’s surge towards the latter half of the decade he’ll win. Although deserving, I probably would crown Taylor not just because I like her but because she’s been consistent since the very beginning of the decade and I’m sure she’s going to have another album before the charts come out.

If this includes tours like the year end charts do, Taylor should take it.

Because an album with 21 tracks that sell 50k each provides more points towards an artist than 1 track that sells 1m

How will features get counted? Drake and Rihanna's tracks have a lot of those so it would impact their odds against Taylor, especially since Hot 100 is where they're strongest.

I think it will come down too if Taylor/adele relseae another massive album by the end of the decade, Taylor has said that she wanted to do another album by the end of 2019
I feel like drake could take it just because he releases every year and it his pace he could dominate 2019 and 2020 as well

This is only going to go until the end of 2019 though right? So it would be the first few weeks of TS7 (inevitably going to be pretty big - though maybe not the year's top seller) + her lead single and maybe 2nd single/promo singles.
