Yeah, I don’t know how you can get IBMY as the #1 song. If it’s based purely on weeks considered to be summer, then I don’t see how you can get anything but Despacito. They really did Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee dirty by not even making it the highest ranked of the 2010s song. Despacito was clearly the biggest summer song of 2010s (this really isn’t debatable), and in most people’s minds, of all time.

BTS' "Butter" wraps as the top title on Billboard's 2021 Songs of the Summer chart.

The 20-position Songs of the Summer running tally tracks the most popular tracks based on cumulative performance on the weekly streaming-, airplay- and sales-based Billboard Hot 100 from Memorial Day through Labor Day (this year encompassing charts dated June 12 through Sept. 11).



"Butter," a 10-week No. 1, and counting, on the Hot 100, claims top honors on the 2021 Songs of the Summer chart over Olivia Rodrigo's "Good 4 U" (No. 2); Dua Lipa's "Levitating" (No. 3); Doja Cat's "Kiss Me More," featuring SZA (No. 4); and The Weeknd and Ariana Grande's "Save Your Tears" (No. 5).

Rounding out the 2021 Songs of the Summer top 10: Lil Nas X's "Montero (Call Me by Your Name)" (No. 6); Rodrigo's "deja vu" (No. 7); Justin Bieber's "Peaches," featuring Daniel Caesar and Giveon (No. 8); Silk Sonic (Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak)'s "Leave the Door Open" (No. 9); and The Kid LAROI and Bieber's "Stay" (No. 10).


As for the top titles this summer in each of the Hot 100's, and the Songs of the Summer chart's, three metrics, Lipa's "Levitating" was the most-heard on radio (1.1 billion audience impressions, according to MRC Data, as reflected on charts dated June 12 through Sept. 11); Rodrigo's "Good 4 U" was the most-streamed (380 million); and BTS' "Butter" was the most-sold (1.7 million).

"Butter" also led the Songs of the Summer chart each week this year. It's the first song to sweep a season since Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road," featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, in 2019.

Among other honors for "Butter," it's the first Songs of the Summer No. 1 by a duo or group in 10 years, since twosome LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem," featuring Lauren Bennett and GoonRock, in 2011. Just two other songs by groups have taken the title since 2000: The Black Eyed Peas' "I Gotta Feeling" (2009) and matchbox twenty's "Bent" (2000).


Also notably, the 2021 Song of the Summer top 10 is dominated by pop songs. Of the 10 titles, only two were eligible to appear on any of Billboard's genre-based weekly song charts that use the same methodology: "Peaches" and "Leave the Door Open" both hit No. 1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot R&B Songs. (The Hot 100 is the de facto "pop" singles chart, as there is no specific multi-metric chart for songs that do not fit under country, R&B/hip-hop, rock/alternative or other genre classifications.)

Conversely, in both 2020 and 2019, seven of the top 10 Songs of the Summer hits appeared on such weekly genre rankings. In 2018, eight did, after nine did in 2017.

What will be the No. 1 song of the summer of 2022? We’re making our way toward the answer, as Billboard‘s annual Songs of the Summer chart returns to Billboard.com today (June 7).

The 20-position Songs of the Summer running tally tracks the most popular titles based on cumulative performance on the weekly streaming-, airplay- and sales-based Billboard Hot 100 chart from Memorial Day through Labor Day (this year encompassing charts dated June 11 through Sept. 10). At the end of the season, the top song of the summer will be revealed.

Harry Styles‘ “As It Was” ranks at No. 1 on the season’s initial Songs of the Summer survey, followed by Jack Harlow’s “First Class” at No. 2 and Future’s “Wait for U,” featuring Drake and Tems, at No. 3. Rounding out the top five, Lizzo’s “About Damn Time” places at No. 4 and Glass Animals’ “Heat Waves” ranks at No. 5.

SiriusXM reintroduces its limited engagement channel Billboard Top 500 Summer Hits beginning Thursday (June 16).

SiriusXM’s limited engagement channel Billboard Top 500 Summer Hits returns Thursday (June 16), celebrating the biggest all-time songs of the summer.

The channel will count down, from No. 500 to No. 1, the hottest summer classics from 1958 through 2021 based on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, featuring such acts as The Beatles, Bee Gees, Mariah Carey, Drake, Elton John, Madonna, Katy Perry, Elvis Presley, Rihanna, Rolling Stones, Usher and (fittingly) Donna Summer.

The first week of SiriusXM’s Billboard Top 500 Summer Hits channel (June 16-22) will be available on SiriusXM channel 104 and the SXM App. The channel will then continue exclusively on the SXM App through Labor Day (Sept. 5).

If this is true, Despacito was clearly robbed of the top spot of the all-time summer songs chart:

807 points in a week is darn near impossible. And this wasn’t a one week fluke either, Despacito was putting numbers like this the entire summer.

It’s darn near impossible to get 80k points now, but back in 2017, Despacito wasn’t even the only song to put up those numbers. Shape of You was putting up really similar numbers during its peak, Look What You Made Me Do had two weeks over 100k, and while I’d have to go back to see the other number ones, I know 50k was considered a relatively weak #1. I really miss when music was that popular.

“As It Was,” a 12-week No. 1, and counting, on the Hot 100 – and Styles’ first seasonal victory on the annual Songs of the Summer survey – takes top honors on the 2022 Songs of the Summer chart over Lizzo’s “About Damn Time” (No. 2); Jack Harlow’s “First Class” (No. 3); Future’s “Wait for U,” featuring Drake and Tems (No. 4); and Kate Bush’s Stranger Things-boosted “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)” (No. 5).

Rounding out the 2022 Songs of the Summer top 10: Bad Bunny and Chencho Corleone’s “Me Porto Bonito” (No. 6); Glass Animals’ “Heat Waves” (No. 7); Beyoncé’s “Break My Soul” (No. 8); Styles’ “Late Night Talking” (No. 9), his follow-up single to “As It Was”; and Bad Bunny’s “Tití Me Preguntó” (No. 10).

With Styles’ “As It Was” and “Late Night Talking” both from his LP Harry’s House, and Bad Bunny’s “Me Porto Bonito” and “Tití Me Preguntó” from his Un Verano Sin Ti release, 2022 marks the third consecutive year that an album has generated two entries in a season-ending Songs of the Summer top 10 – and the first year in which two albums have each contributed two such titles. Olivia Rodrigo’s Sour was represented by “Good 4 U” (No. 2) and “Deja Vu” (No. 7) last year, while Styles’ own Fine Line yielded “Watermelon Sugar” (No. 6) and “Adore You” (No. 10) in 2021. (In 2018, Drake boasted a single-year record three top 10s from his album Scorpion: “In My Feelings,” “Nice for What” and “God’s Plan,” at Nos. 1, 4 and 6, respectively.)

Plus, thanks to Harry’s House and Fine Line, Styles is the first artist with multiple albums that have each spun off two season-closing top 10 singles on the Songs of the Summer chart.



As for the top titles this summer in each of the Hot 100’s, and the Songs of the Summer chart’s, three metrics, Lizzo’s “About Damn Time” was the most-heard on radio (1.1 billion audience impressions, according to Luminate, as reflected on charts dated June 11 through Sept. 10); Future’s “Wait for U” was the most-streamed (304.1 million); and Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” was the most-sold (162,000). Notably, “As It Was” topped the Songs of the Summer chart each week this year. It’s the third song in the last four years to sweep a season, following BTS’ “Butter” in 2021 and Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road,” featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, in 2019 – with all three singles released on Columbia Records.

Meanwhile, variety returned to the Songs of the Summer top 10 this year. The 2021 top 10 was dominated by pop songs, as of last year’s 10 titles, only two appeared on any of Billboard‘s genre-based weekly song charts that use the same methodology (Justin Bieber’s Peaches,” featuring Daniel Caesar and Giveon, and Sink Sonic’s “Leave the Door Open,” both of which hit No. 1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs).

This year, “About Damn Time,” “First Class,” “Wait for U” and “Break My Soul” all led Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs; “Running Up That Hill” and “Heat Waves” both ruled Hot Rock & Alternative Songs; and “Me Porto Bonito” topped Hot Latin Songs and “Tití Me Preguntó” reached No. 2 on that tally. In a year-to-year reversal, of 2022’s top 10 Songs of the Summer hits, just two did not place on a genre-based multi-metric chart: Styles’ pure-pop “As It Was” and “Late Night Talking.”

2022 is, thus, more on par with the rest of the five previous years aside from 2021. In both 2020 and 2019, seven of the top 10 Songs of the Summer hits appeared on weekly multi-metric genre charts, after eight did in 2018 and nine did in 2017.

Billboard’s Songs of the Summer Chart Returns, Led by Morgan Wallen’s ‘Last Night’
The annual summery summary is back, as the race is on for the top summer song of 2023.

What will be the No. 1 song of the summer of 2023? We’re making our way toward the answer, as Billboard’s annual Songs of the Summer chart returns to Billboard.com today (June 6).

The 20-position Songs of the Summer running tally tracks the most popular titles based on cumulative performance on the weekly streaming-, airplay- and sales-based Billboard Hot 100 chart from Memorial Day through Labor Day (this year encompassing charts dated June 10 through Sept. 9). At the end of the season, the top song of the summer will be revealed.

Morgan Wallen’s “Last Night” ranks at No. 1 on the season’s initial Songs of the Summer survey. The track tops the Hot 100 for a ninth week and Hot Country Songs for a 17th frame. No song has earned season-end No. 1 status on the Songs of the Summer chart after leading the Hot 100 and Hot Country Songs; notably, Shania Twain’s “You’re Still the One” ruled Hot Country Songs, hit No. 2 on the Hot 100 and finished at No. 2 on the 1998 Songs of the Summer recap.

Meanwhile, one title has hit the top 10 on both the Hot 100 and Hot Country Songs and claimed top seasonal honors on Songs of the Summer: John Denver’s “Annie’s Song,” in 1974. The ballad reached No. 1 on the Hot 100 and No. 9 on Hot Country Songs.

Taylor Swift’s “Karma” featuring Ice Spice places at No. 2 on the inaugural 2023 Songs of the Summer chart, followed in the top five by Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers” (No. 3), Lil Durk’s “All My Life,” featuring J. Cole (No. 4), and Rema and Selena Gomez’s “Calm Down” (No. 5).

Harry Styles’ “As It Was” was the season-ending No. 1 hit on the 2022 Songs of the Summer chart, after BTS’ “Butter” glided to a top finish in 2021; DaBaby’s “Rockstar” featuring Roddy Ricch wrapped on top in 2020; Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” featuring Billy Ray Cyrus took the title in 2019; and Drake’s “In My Feelings” won in 2018.

Morgan Wallen’s “Last Night” reigns as the No. 1 title on Billboard’s Songs of the Summer chart for the 2023 summer season.

Notably, a country song tops the season-ending tally for the first time since 1974 — while, with Luke Combs’ “Fast Car” at No. 2, country hits claim the top two spots for the first time.

The 20-position Songs of the Summer running tally tracks the most popular titles based on cumulative performance on the weekly streaming-, airplay- and sales-based Billboard Hot 100 chart from Memorial Day through Labor Day (this year encompassing charts dated June 10 through Sept. 9).

“Last Night” claims the title on the 2023 Songs of the Summer chart after leading the weekly chart all 14 weeks this season. On the Hot 100, it dominated for 16 weeks – the most ever for a non-collaboration. It also topped the Hot Country Songs chart for 25 weeks.

The single is just the second that has hit the top 10 on both the Hot 100 and Hot Country Songs and won top seasonal honors on Songs of the Summer: It joins John Denver’s “Annie’s Song,” which reached No. 1 on the Hot 100 and No. 9 on Hot Country Songs in 1974.

Also, as noted above, Taylor Swift and SZA each boast two tracks in the Songs of the Summer top 10 for 2023: Swift with “Cruel Summer” and “Karma” (featuring Ice Spice), and SZA with “Snooze” and “Kill Bill,” respectively.

“Summer” songs: “Cruel Summer” is also the first “summer”-titled Songs of the Summer chart hit since Calvin Harris’ “Summer,” which placed at No. 9 for 2014. The others: Shaggy’s “Boombastic”/”In the Summertime” (No. 6, 1995), DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince’s “Summertime” (No. 7, 1991), Mungo Jerry’s “In the Summertime” (No. 10, 1970) and The Lovin’ Spoonful’s “Summer in the City” (No. 2, 1966 – the highest-ranking such song at the end of any summer season). Hit Songs Deconstructed analyzes the season's top 10 hits.

With summer over — not officially until Sept. 23, but for chart purposes, given that Billboard has announced the season-end 2023 Songs of the Summer chart, which measures performance on the weekly Billboard Hot 100 between Memorial Day and Labor Day — a look at the season’s biggest hits reveals what the average summer smash sounded like this year.

Here is an analysis of compositional characteristics of the survey’s top 10 titles at the season’s close.

Summer of Love

Love was in the air in the summer of 2023. A hefty 80% of the Song of the Summer chart’s season-wrapping top 10 features a love/relationship lyrical theme, with the majority sporting romantic subject matter. Among them, Morgan Wallen’s “Last Night” chronicles his continued desire for his love interest despite their push-and-pull dynamic, while Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers” and SZA’s “Kill Bill” narrate breakups.

Also notably, and logically, the positive songs about love include major-key tonalities, while the more negative ones are complemented by minor-key tonalities.

Meanwhile, only one song in the above 10 leaned toward the platonic end of the spectrum: Taylor Swift’s “Karma” featuring Ice Spice.
Playing Hooky, in the Summer

The biggest summer 2023 hits were earworms, even if they weren’t as fast as might be expected.

While all hits in the season-end Songs of the Summer top 10 feature catchy hooks, largely in their choruses, many bolster their hook presence by hitting the listener with a notable, recognizable hook in their intros (60% of the 10 songs) and/or following their choruses with additional post-chorus hook reiteration (70%).

Meanwhile, when most people think of summer hits, they typically think of uptempo, highly danceable bangers. However, summer 2023’s top 10 includes only three songs at over 100 beats per minute, two of which have a notable dance/club influence: “Flowers” (118 BPM) and Rema and Selena Gomez’s “Calm Down” (107 BPM).

The greatest share of the summer’s top 10 is 80-99 BPM (four titles), including Luke Combs’ “Fast Car,” Swift’s “Cruel Summer” and “Karma,” and “Kill Bill.”

The remaining three songs are under 79 BPM, comprising the R&B/hip-hop hits “All My Life” by Lil Durk featuring J. Cole, SZA’s “Snooze” and Gunna’s “Fukumean.”

Familiar, But Unique

While hit songs possess a host of commonalities that make them familiar to audiences and enable them to easily connect, most also have unique qualities that help them stand out from the pack. The 10 biggest hits on 2023’s Songs of the Summer chart for the season are no exception. Among them:

“Fast Car” has an unusual song structure by today’s mainstream standards. Most hits are based on a core A-B-A-B-C-B form (whereby A: verse; B: chorus; and C: bridge). “Fast Car,” written by Tracy Chapman, who first sent the song to the weekly Hot 100’s top 10 in 1988, features an I-A-T-A-T-A-T-PC-T-B-T-A-T-B-T-A-T-B-T-PC-O form (I: intro; A: verse; T: turnaround; PC: pre-chorus; B: chorus; and O: outro).

“Calm Down” features standout qualities including repetition, more than the other season-end summer top 10s, and the weekly Hot 100’s top 10 in general; hooks combining proper language, slang, nonsensical phrases and Nigerian Pidgin; and an Afrobeats sound, which, despite gaining traction, is still relatively uncommon in the Hot 100’s top 10 and is not present in any of the other top 10 songs of the summer.

Plus, “Flowers” is the only top 10 hit of the summer with a 1970s disco influence and “Kill Bill” features an atypical ‘60s psychedelic influence, while its lyrical hook (“I might kill my ex”) definitely sets it apart.
