On the charts, performances, collaborations, etc
Drake comes to mind a lot. The whole not releasing the hotline bling video on time fiasco still makes me so mad. Not shooting music videos at all for the More Life era or for at least One Dance. It could have spent a few extra weeks at no 1.
Then theres scrapping the music video for Too Good.

The Chainsmokers comes to mind for me whether or not it be the awful performance of Closer at the VMAs, the drastic shift in style this year, Memories... Do Not Open's existence, or the fact that Honest was being pushed as a single.

Justin Timberlake releasing "Filthy". And this is coming from someone who actually likes it.

Lil Xan talking about lacing Xanax with Fentanyl and selling it to people, this coming months after he had talked about Lil Peep's death and how shitty people can be. Oh how ironic.

Tamika Wilson releasing “That Time of the Month” when the better single was clearly “And Your Mama Too” featuring Lil’ Frosty.

Taylor releasing ready for it as a single I liked it? Anyway, I think Jeremih deserves mention for Don't Tell 'Em. Song peaked at 6 but if the video had showed up when the song was peaking in October 2014, it could have been top 3 at least. Instead they waited until January 2015 when the song was 30 and falling fast. Also, Jana Kramer should be brought up for releasing Said No One Ever as her next single after smashing with She Got the Man, her biggest hit to date. Song didn't even chart in country.

I feel like Lady Gaga's entire Artpop era (and honestly parts of BTW even) were her shooting herself in the foot as hard as possible.

Nelly Furtado dropping from the face of earth for 6 years. She went from being an it girl to nowhere to be found on the charts in a span of 2 consecutive album cycles. She's had the weirdest relationship with the charts I've ever witnessed.

Although it wasn't her fault, a song called Die Young being Hugh durning the sandy hook shooting really killed the momentum for the Warrior era

Mariah won the minute she got a top 10 hit thanks to Eminem's Pop star fighting ass. If you think "Obsessed" killed her career, you're delusional and clearly ignorant.

She's had the weirdest relationship with the charts I've ever witnessed. Interesting. In my experience, this has happened many times to many artists over the decades - for various reasons. I'd even say it's more common for a pop star to hit the big time and come and go relatively quickly than to have more than three successful eras. As for Nelly, I think a big part of the reason for the sharp fall-off was the 6 years that went by between Loose and her follow up English-language album. During 2006-2012, we witnessed the likes of Rihanna, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga, to name a few, completely take over as "it girls". Nelly lost her place by being absent, but also pop moves on fairly quickly to new things, so her career may have suffered even if Mi Plan were an English album. Hard to say. I do miss her presence on the charts - her first three albums were among my favorites of the decade, and she had some of the more memorable pop female singles for me as well.

Kanye wearing a MAGA hat and saying slavery was a choice, drove off a lot of fans and it would have been better if he just kept his mouth shut.

I'd say American Life for Madonna. The single and its video, specifically, as they set the tone for the entire album, unfortunately. I applaud her willingness to be political, but it's a great example of why pop stars being political is generally not encouraged. It was such a politically-charged time in this country, and many chose to see her as being "un-American" for expressing what many were thinking - which we see play out regularly with entertainers and other celebrities now in the Trump era. It's a whole thing.
I know there are many who think the songs sucks, regardless of its political video, etc. Her "rapping" was enough for some people to hang her out to dry, and the lyrics were just cringe worthy, etc. I just think the political "un-american" fallout was the bigger problem overall, as many people already didn't like her for her willingness to be overtly sexual in the decade(s) prior. She got written off by middle America entirely, it seems. Confessions got slept on in the US because of it, for the most part, and it took teaming up with Justin Timberlake to finally get her another big US radio hit.
AL is a great album, imo, even if its not the side of Madonna many appreciated or even ever gave a chance to after the video controversy.

Also Eminem's response completely tears apart this song and is considered one of the greatest diss tracks of all time. Eminem’s only-beefing-with-female-pop-Stars ass didn’t end anyone’s career. “Obsessed” was a hit. Her career has been on the down slide for a myriad of reasons - poor single choices, poor management, sexist ageism in pop music, Mariah’s own personal choices, etc. None of the reasons come back to “Obsessed” or Eminem. Em stans gas up the diss and its effect. Male rapper vs female singer who made a song with commercial success. His ranting diss only further aids in the obsessed narrative. All of that aside, “Obsessed” worked it for her fine. And the only people who cared about Em’s diss were Em stans.

That song didn't kill her career don't be dumb to the fact that AGE and changing styles of music killed her career. She also had a moderately successful single called beautiful that did well.

But this is Mariah 18 #1's sis including two decade #1's and the longest run at the summit. Nor is it like Mariah is really trying to chase the charts at all this decade cause she already knows she's an established legend.

I think the reality show/New Year's Eve performances did more to wreck Mariah's career than Obsessed. Changing tastes in music/ageism played more a role in her fading from the charts than anything.
Avril Lavigne's Hello Kitty---Can you say goodbye to pop/rock credibility? Madonna's Bleep I'm Madonna---That one song was borderline reductive of her entire career. Britney's reality show with then-husband/hanger-on Kevin Federline. Lady Gaga's Applause---Oof.
