And looking back at #1's from periods, the most 'different' #1 I've heard is Prince's Batdance (not including novelty songs). It just really sounds so different from a structure of a hit from any period. It sounds like a medley really lol. Well, in some ways it is a medley, and more so there is no real structure in terms of the lyric and melody. There isn't even a chorus. So, yeah, it is definitely different from any other #1.

Also there's the actual medley #1, Stars on 45 Medley which definitely doesn't sound like a typical #1 from that period or any period. And We Didn't Start the Fire has the least simple/hardest to follow lyrics of any #1 imo lol. The 80s.

What drove that particular song to number one? The movie was huge (and the song hit #1 not too long after its release), and Prince was still 'a name' at that point. "Batdance" actually hit #1 at Top 40 radio. It is still odd that it caught on, but I am assuming the movie being big and the song using clips from the movie helped.

2.2 million audience for SAD! yesterday according to Kworb, might be higher. Excited to see what Spotify streaming numbers are as well over 4million for a second straight day and it will easily clinch #1. Amazing how the streaming era has ruled the charts. People making it fun again, like the 90s, we don’t want the long 15 week #1s like Despacito. We like different #1s and SAD! would sure to be a toss up.

Meanwhile, I Like It continues to impress in radio over 78M audience according to Kworb and streams are doing quite well. Sales are a yawn but it’s 2018 so who cares. It’s definitely a fight between ILI, GLY and SAD! this week. Should be a fun one! DJ Khaled x Justin x CTR x Quavo impact next week, will they debut at #1 for a another ONE? Need a music video release WITH THE SINGLE, 30k sales, 7-10M audience and 40-45M streams and they will clinch the top spot next week. Not to mention Drake in one week.

But our generation of music lovers lean towards new music, no one likes a song that plays on repeat like annoying Despacito did.

Here's hoping this is it, I guess. I'd be ok with either one of those three songs going #1 next week. I kinda want them all to go #1...

Numerous songs that only stay at #1 for a single week gets boring after awhile too (take it from one who remembers the 80's). Be careful what you wish for.

I think xxx is doing well and his album will shoot up higher than the song. the daily spotify streams for I like it vs sad are about 1M difference but will that make Sad a contender for #3? I'm sure apple music and others have a high variance but I like it should be secured. if anything Girls like you and sad will be fighting. In a ideal situation: Sad will repeak top 3/5 on hot 100 xxxtentacion will rise top 3/5 on billboard 200 I like it will hit #1 girls like you will hit #2 or #3 girls will be discounted on June 22 to secure the #1 after I like it. They can discount I Like it on the 22nd but what's the point if it is already going to hit #1 without it but either discount 22nd (I like it) 29th (girls like you) or discount Girls like you on the 22nd. ...and then there is drake for the remainder of the summer.

When I saw the word "Desburrito", I felt an evil force come through me. I felt scared, upset, HURT. I was shaking. It really upset me to see those letters, in that order, show up on my screen. It needs to be stopped. Millions of people suffer from jokes like this. People say "Just ignore it", well I can't. You can't "just ignore" a some letters that pop up on your screen. People say "It's just a word". It's not "just a word". It has big effects on you and it's a form of violence and needs to be made illegal and criminalised. People who make racist jokes need to be put into prison! This has to stop, and thank you for protecting me.

"Criminalized" violence on a music message board --- ugh!
My interpretation - "Desburrito" is a joke about a song - not a person or a race or any protected class of people.
The songs and the charts that they are listed on are entertainment and not to be taken seriously.

The songs and the charts that they are listed on are entertainment and not to be taken seriously. It’s certainly a joke about a race of people; “Despacito” is a Spanish song, and “burrito” is associated with Mexican (i.e. Spanish speaking) people. “Desburrito” is definitely a joke that plays on a racial stereotype. I don’t know how that can even be in question. Now, whether it’s just a joke or something more is objective I suppose.

I can't answer for the person who posted it but to me....."Desburrito" is wordplay off the song title itself, which makes it a joke about the song. Yes, "Despacito" is a Spanish song but there are lots of other Spanish songs out there too that are not subject to the same wordplay because not all Spanish songs have the word "Despacito" contained in the lyrics. Turning a joke about a song on a music-entertainment chart on a music message board into a racial issue is going overboard, in my opinion.

First of all, the poster was expressing disdain for that particular song being #1 for awhile. And then why choose “burrito” as the word to combine with “Despacito” and not, say, “Desmosquito” since a mosquito is seen as something annoying and thus fits the context of the post better?

I am not personally a fan of mixing enjoyment of music with "political correctness", or other politics or social issues. A song is a song and the meaning you get from the song of course, depends on the individual. People write songs to entertain. Many people listen to songs to be entertained. The chart that this song is placed on is nothing more than an entertainment popularity chart. To me "Desburrito"-gate is overblown and a nothing issue. If you want to make it an issue about racism -- have fun.

Omg. You guys needs to stop this. Your guys personality about my word choice seriously is making me lmao. I totally agree with Gary that I NEVER MEANT TO BE RACIST!! Ok, I have heard that intrepertation about the song a million times and never have once thought it as “racist”. So I’m sorry to spring anyone off in the chat discussion and will remove my post off the discussion board. I apologize again.
Thank you

But many are excited that a self-proclaimed homophobic gay basher/alleged woman beater may hit #1 on this week's chart. In that context and hateful environment, a crude joke is small compared to those types actions. Fortunately, we live in a country where people have the right to choose what music they want to hear.

Streaming has changed the charts in many ways, for sure, but more variety isn't one of them. (And btw, I'm from Latin America and and I chuckled at "Desburrito". It's just a song.)
