Before Sammy Kershaw, there was Doug Kershaw. Sammy avoided being a one hit wonder, but his cousin, Doug did not. Doug charted seven singles between 1969-1989. Only one broke the top 40. He signed to the Scotti Brothers label in 1980. His 1981 album, Instant Hero yielded the lead single, Hello Woman. Released in June, it peaked at #29 in August. The title track was the second and final single. It did not chart. Kershaw was dropped by Scotti Brothers in 1982.

Hot Apple Pie was signed to the DreamWorks label between 2004-2006. They were led by Brady Seals who led another group (maybe you've heard of them), Little Texas. In any case, their only album was a self-titled one and that was released in 2005. Lead single, Hillbillies was released in March and peaked at #26 in August. The followed that with the #54 peaking We're Makin' Up. They opened 2006 with Easy Does It (#50). While that single was charting, DreamWorks folded.

I had received a request at the drive thru last week. I will not say who requested it, but here it is. It is by Les Paul and Mary Ford. They were married between 1949-1963. It is the same Les Paul who is a guitar virtuoso. They landed their only top 40 country hit in 1951 with Mockin' Bird Hill. That reached #7 in March of that year. I do not know when it was released or who produced the track. This is by far the earliest one hit wonder example in the thread. Enjoy!

Michael White peaked at #32 in 1992 with his only top 40 single, "Professional Fool". Michael has 2 #1 singles as a co-writer, "The Baby" by Blake Shelton and "Kiss You In The Morning" by Michael Ray. His father L.E. White wrote songs for Conway Twitty.

The One Hit Wonders thread turns one this week. I would like to thank all of you who have participated. In honor of that, I will present a twofer today. The greatest one hit wonder in country music is by a duo called The Davis Sisters. They consisted of unrelated Skeeter and Betty Davis. They only managed one chart single and that was I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know. That was released in August, 1953. Right when it was released, Betty was killed in a car crash. She was replaced by her sister, Georgia. I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know topped the chart for eight weeks starting in October. It became a crossover hit when it peaked at #18 pop. It inspired an answer song by Betty Cody. Her song was called I Found Out More Than You Ever Knew. Hers was released in November and peaked at #10 in December. The Davis Sisters were tops while Cody peaked. Skeeter would start a solo career shortly after her short lived success of the duo and her biggest hit is The End Of The World (#2 country, #2 pop, and #1 adult contemporary in 1963).

Brannon's version was released in September, 1981 and peaked at #37 in November. She charted twice in 1982: If I Could See You Tonight (#55) and He Don't Make Me Cry (#87). In My Dreams did not chart in 1983. She did release an album in 1997 called I'd Be With You. Two singles from the album charted that year.

Jewel Blanch rose to fame as an actress. She had a short lived music career during the late 1970s. She signed to the RCA label in 1978. She issued a single in January, 1979 called Can I See You Tonight. As far as I can tell, RCA never released an album on Blanch (if someone knows different, please let me know). In any case, Can I See You Tonight peaked at #33 in April. Two years later, Tanya Tucker cut a version and took it to #4.

Russell Smith just celebrated his 70th birthday last month and passed away this month. He was the lead singer for the group Amazing Rhythm Aces (Third Rate Romance). He embarked on a solo career during the 1980s. He charted three singles between 1984-1988. He signed to the Epic label in 1988. He released an album in 1989 called This Little Town. Lead single, I Wonder What She's Doing Tonight was released in February and it peaked at #37 in May. A follow up single became his swan song on the chart and that is the #61 peaking Anger And Tears. Besides being a singer, Smith was also a songwriter.

Virgin Records had a short lived stay in Nashville. They signed Jerry Kilgore in 1999. He issued his debut album, Love Trip that year. In July, he released his debut single, the title track. That peaked at #36 in November. 2000 saw him chart just two more times with The Look (#49) and Cactus In A Coffee Can (#73). The latter tune was recorded by Reba McEntire for her current album, Stronger Than The Truth. Virgin closed its Nashville division in 2001.

Emilio joined other Spanish speaking country artists like Freddy Fender and Johnny Rodriguez in scoring country hits. Unlike the other two, Emilio did become a one hit wonder. He did so in 1995 when his debut single, It's Not The End Of The World peaked at #27. It was released in July and peaked in December. It came from his 1995 album called Life Is Good. A Spanish version of the song was released, but did not chart. 1996 saw him chart with the other three singles: Even If I Tried (#41-almost a two hit wonder here), I Think We're On To Something (#56), and his version of Have I Told You Lately (#62). He charted just two more times in 1997.

When I bought Chris Young's debut album in 2006 there was a song on it that caught my attention and as I listened to it it sounded very familiar. Well little did I know the man that wrote the song charted the song back in 1997. It was his only top 40 hit to date.
Billy Wayne Yates (born March 13, 1963, in Doniphan, Missouri) is an American country music artist. He has released ten studio albums and has charted four singles on the Billboard country charts, including the number 36 "Flowers" in 1997. Yates also co-wrote George Jones' singles "I Don't Need Your Rockin' Chair" and "Choices" which Billy also recorded in Ireland with country music artist Gareth Pritchard for his debut album Can You Feel It.
