How does having the same skin tone make someone relatable? I never understood that. Well, it's not just skin tone, it's racial/ethnic, cultural, etc..... People tend to hang around and associate more with others who are like themselves. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, it's just a sociological fact. Race doesn't always define culture. Nationality and background I'd say, is more important in defining that. But I don't see people saying "I relate better to American musicians!"

Yes, I mentioned that I didn't understand what you said about Beyonce, so can you clarify? I said her sales haven't matched her media coverage and the like. She's never had a truly blockbuster album along the likes of 21, Jagged Little Pill, etc. Even in the 00s her biggest sellers didn't sell as well as the biggest albums by Mariah Carey, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, etc. I'm not saying her sales are bad by any means, but she's gotten more media coverage, awards show performances, etc than any artist so you'd think she would have sold more. Well alright, I guess there's some merit to that.

Same with Australia. Since all are English-speaking nations, it isn't about language either.

On Spotify Drake still has top 13 but only 7 songs over 2m any more. So I'd say he'd only occupy 4-5 positions in top ten on Hot 100.
In comparison: Jocelyn Flores by Xxxtentacion had over 2m for 2 days in June and that song re-entered Hot 100 at #19.
Scorpion's third day was slightly better than Beerbongs & Bentleys' though, the seventh songs are 2.04 vs. 1.74

Let's use Post Malone's album to see how Drake's Scorpion might perform on Spotify for the entire week: B&B's total streams (according to Spotify Charts): 230,996,348 Day | Streams | % of its total streams (230.9M) | Friday | 47.14M | 20.41 | Saturday | 36.23M | 15.68 | Sunday | 29.25M | 12.66 | Monday | 33.84M | 14.65 | Tuesday | 30.67M | 13.28 | Wednesday | 27.74M | 12.01 | Thursday | 26.09M | 11.30 |
If Scorpion's first day (80,482,708) is 20.41% of its weekly streams: 394,329,780 US Spotify streams. Scorpion - Saturday (June 30) update 60,612,720 streams / -24.7% (beerbongs & bentleys: -23.2% on Saturday - April 28) Songs with better than expected updates: Nonstop, Don't Matter To Me, In My Feelings and Nice For What. Scorpion - Sunday (July 1) update 41,232,284 streams / -32.0% (beerbongs & bentleys: -19.3% on Sunday - April 29)

I have never read such a nonsense :DD I'd rather compare Scorpion to Taylor Swift's album campaigns. Why they didn't write a story like this when Post Malone had a big success with his album...

Race doesn't always define culture. Nationality and background I'd say, is more important in defining that. But I don't see people saying "I relate better to American musicians!" Well, they clearly do, since non-english songs usually have no chance in America, unlike every other country. They rarely do well in say, Canada either. America has a decently sized Latin market. And I said American. Not English-language. The reason non-English doesn't do well typically? No one can understand it. A lot of people don't like songs they can't understand. And there's nothing wrong with that. At that point, you might as well make up your own language, sing it, and just post to lyric sites what it means arbitrarily. Should people listen to gibberish too? It's just as incomprehensible as Chinese or Hindi to the average listener.

^Which is one of the reason why Despacito to be remixed with Justin Bieber lyrics. That allowed the song to become really successful worldwide rather than only the Spanish-speaking countries. Obviously, having such a high profile English-speaking artist involved contributed a lot in those countries.

I mean, it just doesn't seem like he's ever had Beyonce, Taylor, Justin (both), Miley, Katy, Gaga levels of noteriety.....but those are the kind of numbers he puts up White privilege? Beyonce’s media coverage has always been overgrown to her sales/streams. Her tours is where she makes money. Now but when I saw her in concert for the "BDay" tour it wasn't like that in Boston. She was NOT sold out by any means. If the place held 15-16,000 she had about 10-11,000 there. I sat in the cheaper seats and it was pretty empty. Ugh, just realizing how long ago that was..... I guess I take it back. lol

Btw it will be interesting to see the new entries when most of Drake's songs fall off. Indeed. If I had to guess, he'll have quite a few tracks lingering for awhile, so the re-entries may end up doing more trickling than roaring? Who knows.

I like Drake but come on.... I was around for "Thriller" and it was bizarre. Parents and kids wanted everything Michael Jackson. The red "Beat It" jacket was big, toys were made etc etc. White or black, young or old, pop or rnb fan you were into Michael during this era. He was meeting presidents, world leaders etc etc. Everyone wanted a piece of Michael. Yes Drake's album is big but "Thriller" mania was a lot different. Perhaps the writer wasn't around during that time????

If you're not interested in Drake it's very simple to not listen to his songs or watch his videos. I'm sure there's a giant chunk of the population who has no idea he has a new album out. Our listening and watching and social media habits are so tailored to our interests we can skip or completely miss pop culture events if we're not interested. But not in 1983. You couldn't turn on the radio or the TV or see a magazine without seeing Michael Jackson. I don't think current media allows for that kind of massive cultural juggernaut anymore.

I'd say that Adele's latest album was the last time their was "mania" for an album/artist, although not as extreme as Michael Jackson during the Thriller/Bad eras.

I kind of see what your saying but in this instance it's not the same. Michael mania was HUGE and somewhat bizzare at the time. I wasn't huge on Michael at the time. I was still obsessed with making Donna Summer's latest a hit. lol. My mother loved him for the moment though. I think with all the social media and our current youth obsession I would think it would be easier for Drake to feel as big as Michael. Some people think social media is be all end all. You see it on there it must be true... I know what your saying and now we have more options to pick and choose what we want but back then you didn't have to buy the tape if you didn't want either., Michael mania was a lot bigger than Drakes hot streak right now.

Drake's 'Scorpion' Breaks One-Week U.S. Streaming Record in Only Three Days Drake’s Scorpion has already smashed the U.S. one-week streaming record for an album -- in just three days.
According to industry sources, the set -- which was released June 29 via Young Money/Cash Money/Republic Records -- has tallied over 435 million on-demand audio streams for its 25 songs in the U.S. through July 1. That sum vaults past the previous record, earned by Post Malone’s beerbongs & bentleys, which earned 431.3 million streams for its songs in the week ending May 3, according to Nielsen Music. Notably, Post Malone’s set earned its total over a full seven days of tracking. Forecasters expect that Scorpion could collect over 700 million streams in the U.S. by the end of the tracking week on July 5. Scorpion is set to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart (dated July 14) with perhaps over 700,000 in overall equivalent album units earned -- the biggest week for an album in 2018. Scorpion's official first-week streaming sum — along with its overall consumption figure and album sales start — as collected and verified by Nielsen Music, is slated to be announced on Billboard's websites on July 8. If Scorpion starts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, it will log Drake his eighth chart-topper in-a-row. All seven of his previous full-length albums have debuted at No. 1. His only chart entry to miss the top was his first release, the EP So Far Gone, which debuted and peaked at No. 6 in 2009. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multimetric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The top 10 of the July 14-dated Billboard 200 chart (where Drake could debut at No. 1) is scheduled to be revealed on Billboard’s websites on Sunday, July 8. Scorpion’s arrival on the chart coincides with the list’s first week of employing an updated weighting formula for on-demand audio streams, giving greater emphasis to paid subscription streams. Through the July 7-dated chart, one SEA unit equaled 1,500 on-demand audio streams across all streaming services that contributed to the chart. From July 14-onward -- on the Billboard 200 and all other album consumption charts -- one SEA unit will equal 1,250 paid subscription audio streams or 3,750 ad-supported streams. www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/8463661/drake-scorpion-breaks-one-week-us-streaming-record-three-days

I'm not really talking about sales, because no one was forced to buy Thriller. I'm just talking as a cultural presence. Drake is huge but there are a lot of people who don't really know him or could tell you what he looks like. MJ was inescapable, whether you liked him or not. It's just that most of us did like him lol
