I'm okay with this, honestly at this point it's just a life-time achievement award. As much as I like Timberlake and P!nk, they definitely don't have the most memorable videos either but they got it. Plus I think J-Lo is an all around better entertaining than those two and has some real classic songs under her belt, so I think it's deserved.
I wish they would double up once in a while though, back in the 80's and 90's they would give out the Vanguard award to multiple artists in a single year. Bowie and The Beatles both received it in 1984, Tom Petty and The Rolling Stones in 1994, etc. Maybe give it to an artist and a director, I think Dave Meyers deserves the award cuz he has so many iconic videos under his belt and he's still directing big videos today, hell two of his videos are up for VOTY (Havana, No Tears) and he took home VOTY last year as well.

JLo is a good choice. She has several memorable videos and she's a great entertainer.

Yessss!
A) love her B) latin music is on trend now in general C) great to see her perform at the VMAs D) Gaga can be the recipient every year so now it can very well be J.Lo's turn
SHAME Missy's still snubbed

I doubt Missy will ever get it, people who watch MTV don't know who she is

If Missy got it, she would have brought in another audience, which would have helped the VMA's overall ratings. She's an 90s icon so don't easily assume people wouldn't know who she is.

People get on my nerves say s**t like that. Her whole catalog exploded after the superbowl. Superbowl immediately came to mind when I read that people don't know who she is. That's absurd due to how recent it has been since she performs there.

To be fair, A LOT of people had no idea who Missy was and downloaded the songs after hearing them for the FIRST time on the Super Bowl. These were a bunch of memes at the time lol Her last hit was well over a decade ago, so it is true that a lot of the young culture who propel MTV right now really have no idea who she is.
Missy is an absolute legend, but as others have said, she isn't relevant enough right now. If she would get her act together and finally release an album, she can get it. She's too nervous and shy to drop one though, but whatever. Hopefully one day she will get the award.

Missy's last hit "WTF" peaked at #22 in 2016. J.Lo's last hit was "Dance Again" in 2012. Hell "I'm Better" peaked higher than "Dinero"

VMAs suck anyway. They haven't been good in years. They used to be so iconic.

I wonder if this will be Cardi’s return? She’s most nominated, so they will want her to perform and JLo is more than likely performing Dinero. It’ll be 2 months almost since she gave birth. I wouldn’t be shocked if she was there.

Yeah I don't see Shawn having a 2nd hit this album if they are still performing IMB, which is still a good song but has been over
Only moment I'm looking forward to is Ari and the possibility of Jlo doing a medley

The fact that one supposedly needs to be 'relevant' to win what is essentially a Lifetime Achievement Award (in itself an implicit acknowledgement that said recipient is permanently past his or her peak relevancy) is the first thing that's wrong with the way the VMAs are approached these days. Instead of saying 'oh, no one knows who Missy is' why not look at this as an opportunity to remind people exactly who she is and why her career is so iconic?
No shade to J. Lo; she's an icon in her own right. But the argument against Missy deserving it as much or more is trash, to say the least.

They are both over 45. When was the last time anyone that age got it? Has anyone received it after the age of 40? I do think both are equally deserving though.

Quite a lot of OLD people have got it, for example The Rolling Stones in 1994. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Jackson_Video_Vanguard_Award

VMAs suck anyway. They haven't been good in years. They used to be so iconic. I feel like everytime I go into an awards show thread before, during or after the show, it is just people moaning about how it is bad now. No one is forcing you to come in here or even watch the show.
