Drake's 'Scorpion' Set for Biggest Debut of 2018 & No. 1 on Billboard 200 Chart 0:26 / 0:30
Drake’s Scorpion is set to sizzle at No. 1 on next week’s Billboard 200 albums chart, according to industry forecasters.
Those in the know suggest his latest effort could debut atop the list with over 700,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending July 5. That would mark the biggest week for an album in 2018 and the largest for any set since Taylor Swift’s reputation. debuted at No. 1 on the Dec. 2, 2017-dated list with 1.238 million units, according to Nielsen Music. Currently, the biggest week of 2018 belongs to Post Malone's beerbongs & bentleys, which debuted at No. 1 with 461,000 units on the chart dated May 12.
Scorpion was released on June 29 via Young Money/Cash Money/Republic Records. If the set opens at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, it will grant Drake his eighth total and consecutive leader on the tally. All seven of his previous full-length albums debuted at No. 1.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multimetric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The top 10 of the July 14-dated Billboard 200 chart (where Drake will likely debut at No. 1) is scheduled to be revealed on Billboard’s websites on Sunday, July 8.
Much of Scorpion’s big opening week will be powered by streams, as the set could launch with over 700 million on-demand streams for its songs in the U.S., according to forecasters. Scorpion has already -- according to sources -- broken the one-week U.S. streaming record, having garnered over 435 million streams for its tracks in its first three days. That surpasses the previous record for a week, set by beerbongs & bentleys, which earned 431.3 million streams in the week ending May 3, according to Nielsen Music. Notably, Post Malone’s album earned its total over a full seven days of tracking.
Drake attends the 2018 Vanity Fair Oscar Party hosted by Radhika Jones at Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts on March 4, 2018 in Beverly Hills, Calif.
Scorpion's official first-week streaming sum -- along with its overall consumption figure and album sales start -- as collected and verified by Nielsen Music, is slated to be announced on Billboard's websites on July 8.
Scorpion, which is currently available to purchase only as a digital album, might sell 200,000 in traditional album sales. A CD edition of the album is due on July 13.
Drake’s last release, 2017’s More Life, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 505,000 units earned in its first week. Of that sum, 225,000 were in traditional album sales (all from digital sales). More Life launched with 384.8 million on-demand audio streams -- now the third-largest streaming week for an album, behind Post Malone’s beerbongs and Drake’s new Scorpion.

Drake's 'Scorpion' Is the First Album to Hit 1 Billion Global Streams in a Single Week
7/6/2018 by Kevin Rutherford
The superstar's new album rewrites the mark for the most streams globally in a seven-day period.
Drake's new set Scorpion has become the first album to hit 1 billion streams globally across all streaming platforms in a single week, industry sources have confirmed to Billboard.
In all, Scorpion's tracks accumulated more than 1 billion streams globally in the most recent tracking week (June 29-July 5), the set's first week available, making it the first album to reach the milestone. Previously, Post Malone's beerbongs & bentleys held the global record with just under 700 million streams (April 27-May 3), according to industry insiders.
Additionally, Scorpion scored over 750 million streams U.S.-only in its first seven days, according to sources, likewise smashing the domestic record set by Post Malone's beerbongs (431.3 million, according to Nielsen Music). As previously reported, Scorpion broke beerbongs' record in just its first three days by tallying 435 million U.S. streams from June 29 through July 1. Beerbongs achieved that total over its first seven days, April 27-May 3.
Scorpion's streaming numbers alone should easily send it to a No. 1 launch on the Billboard 200 albums chart dated July 14 with over 700,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in its first week, according to industry forecasters, marking the biggest week for an album in 2018 so far.
Final U.S. sales and streaming tabulations according to Nielsen Music will be announced once all data is fully processed, with the top 10 and highlights of the Billboard 200 scheduled to be revealed on Billboard's websites Sunday, July 8. The top 10 and highlights of the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart will post the following day, Monday, July 9.
Scorpion's debut coincides with the Billboard 200's first week of employing an updated weighting formula for on-demand audio streams, giving greater emphasis to paid subscription streams. The Hot 100 will also employ this formula beginning with the July 14-dated ranking.

Drake Is Responsible for 5% of Toronto's Tourism Economy, Expert Finds News By Colin Stutz | July 06, 2018 5:44 PM EDT
Drake's influence on music is huge, having set new streaming records with his latest album, Scorpion, and getting so much support on Spotify it had some customers demanding refunds. But it doesn't stop there.
According to marketing and branding consultant Gordon Hendren in a recent Vice News report, the hip-hop icon's influence is responsible for about 5 percent of the city's $8.8 billion total annual tourism income. That amounts to about $440 million coming in, thanks to his repping his hometown, the Toronto Raptors and various restaurants and clubs around the city.
"He's helped to rebrand the city," Hendren said in the piece. "He's kind of made himself the same as Toronto."
As proof, Vice points to Drake's influence in coining the nickname "The Six" or "The 6ix," his OVO brand, featuring various landmarks and local establishments in music videos and on album art and more. Speaking with Ward 37 Councillor Michael Thompson, he described using Drake as a selling-point to bring a $147 million tech conference to Toronto for the next three years.
"When I mentioned this was home of Drake, the people just kind of went crazy -- just the mere mention of his name," he said. "The native son is here, he's got a great brand, we're gonna kind of hitch ourselves on it a little bit and get pulled up along the way."

I hope RIAA is implementing these new rules soon too?
What's the point of a Billboard 200 formula that creates different numbers than RIAA will use.

RIAA and Billboard are not affiliated with each other. They have always followed slightly different rules. Yeah, but as far as units go they’ve been aligned. 1500 streams equaled 1 album unit with both. 10 song sales equaled 1 album unit with both. 150 streams equaled 1 song unit with both. Etc, etc. Now they have completely different formulas for what equates to an album unit. RIAA has an agenda against video streams from YouTube/VEVO way more than anybody else in the music industry so I would be surprised if they didn’t follow Billboard’s downweighing of free streams.

Guns N' Roses' 'Appetite for Destruction' Returns to Top 10 on Billboard 200 Chart After Deluxe Reissue 7/8/2018 by Keith Caulfield
The former No. 1 album is back in the top 10 after more than 29 years. Guns N’ Roses’ classic 1987 debut album, Appetite for Destruction, returns to the top 10 on the Billboard 200 chart after more than 29 years. The former No. 1 re-enters the tally (dated July 14) at No. 10, following its deluxe remastered reissue on June 29.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units are comprised of traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). As of this week, each unit equals one traditional album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from one album (a TEA unit), or 1,250 paid subscription on-demand audio song streams from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported on-demand audio song streams from an album (an SEA unit). (The weighting of an SEA unit was updated with the July 14-dated charts.)
The new July 14-dated chart -- where Appetite jumps back on at No. 10 -- will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on Tuesday, July 10.
For tracking and charting purposes, all versions of Appetite for Destruction are combined, and in the week ending July 5, the album earned 33,000 units (up 1,541 percent). The album was reissued in a variety of formats: the standard 12-track remastered album, a new deluxe edition with 18 bonus tracks, a double vinyl LP set, a 73-track super deluxe set and a lavish limited edition Locked N’ Loaded box set with four CDs, a blu-ray disc, seven vinyl LPs and seven 7” vinyl singles (among other goodies).
One of the set’s new bonus tunes, a previously unreleased version of the archival track “Shadow of Your Love,” was promoted to radio stations and has peaked at No. 5 on the Mainstream Rock Songs airplay chart. Appetite for Destruction debuted on the Billboard 200 dated Aug. 29, 1987 at No. 182 and eventually reached No. 1 nearly a year later, on the Aug. 6, 1988-dated list. The set spent five nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 and finished 1988 as the No. 6 biggest album on the Billboard 200.
Appetite for Destruction was last in the top 10 a little more than 29 years ago, when it placed at No. 8 on the April 15, 1989-dated tally.

Florence + The Machine, Gorillaz Debut in Top 10 on Billboard 200 Albums Chart 7/8/2018 by Keith Caulfield
As Drake’s Scorpion album swoops in to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, Florence + The Machine and Gorillaz log their latest top 10s on the tally with High as Hope and The Now Now, respectively.
The new July 14-dated chart (where Drake, Florence + The Machine and Gorillaz arrive in the top 10) will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on Tuesday, July 10. As previously reported, Drake’s Scorpion starts at No. 1 with 732,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending July 5, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 160,000 were in traditional album sales. The album launches with a new one-week U.S. record for on-demand audio streams generated by an album’s songs: 745.9 million.
Florence + The Machine’s High as Hope bows at No. 2 with 84,000 units (74,000 in traditional album sales). High as Hope is the third top 10 effort for the act, following their last album, How Big How Blue How Beautiful in 2015 (No. 1) and Ceremonials (No. 6 in 2011). How Big bowed with 137,000 units, of which 128,000 were in traditional album sales.
High as Hope was ushered in by the single “Hunger,” which has spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Adult Alternative Songs airplay chart through the most-recently-published list dated July 7. Post Malone’s former No. 1, beerbongs & bentleys, holds steady at No. 3 with 72,000 units (down 3 percent).
Animated band Gorillaz log its fifth top 10 effort, as The Now Now starts at No. 4 with 63,000 units (52,000 in traditional album sales). The act’s last album, 2017’s Humanz, launched at No. 2 with 140,000 units (115,000 in album sales).
The Now Now was led by the single “Humility,” featuring George Benson, which has so far peaked at No. 26 on the Adult Alternative Songs chart and at No. 30 on the Alternative Songs airplay chart (both dated July 7). XXXTentacion’s ? moves down one rung on the new Billboard 200 to No. 5 with 62,000 units (down 28 percent), Cardi B’s Invasion of Privacy is up two places to No. 6 with 47,000 units (up 10 percent), Juice WRLD’s Goodbye & Good Riddance is stationary at No. 7 with 39,000 units (down 11 percent) and The Carters’ Everything Is Love falls 4-8 with 37,000 units (down 38 percent).
Panic! at the Disco’s Pray for the Wicked drops from No. 1 to No. 9 in its second chart week, with 35,000 units (down 81 percent).
Rounding out the new top 10 is Guns N’ Roses’ former No. 1, Appetite for Destruction. The band’s classic debut album, released in 1987, re-enters the chart at No. 10 following the release of its deluxe remastered reissue on June 29. For tracking and charting purposes, all versions of the album are combined. In the week ending July 5, the album earned 33,000 units (up 1,541 percent).

Drake Earns Eighth No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart With 'Scorpion,' Sets New Streaming Record 7/8/2018 by Keith Caulfield
The album generated 745.9 million on-demand audio streams in the U.S. for its songs in its release week — a new record.
Drake’s Scorpion album makes a smashing, streaming-powered debut atop the Billboard 200 chart, as the set opens with the largest overall week of 2018 for any album.
Scorpion, which was released on June 29 via Young Money/Cash Money/Republic Records, bows with 732,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending July 5 according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 160,000 were in traditional album sales.
The new July 14-dated chart -- where Scorpion debuts at No. 1 -- will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on Tuesday, July 10. Here’s a look at some of the feats and figures associated with Scorpion’s arrival at No. 1:
Drake’s Eighth No. 1 Album: Scorpion is Drake’s eighth consecutive No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 -- the entirety of his full-length releases. His only charting album to miss the top slot was his debut EP, So Far Gone, which bowed and peaked at No. 6 in 2009.
Drake ties Kanye West and Eminem for the second-most credited No. 1 albums among hip-hop acts in the history of the chart. Only JAY-Z is ahead of them, as he owns 14 chart-toppers. (Among all acts, The Beatles have the most No. 1s with 19.) Record-Tying Eight Straight No. 1s: Drake has earned all eight of his Billboard 200 No. 1s consecutively, tying West, Eminem and The Beatles for the longest streak of No. 1s. West had most recently joined the exclusive club when Ye bowed atop the June 16-dated chart.
Biggest Streaming Week Ever for an Album: The 25-track Scorpion charges in with a new one-week record for on-demand audio streams generated by an album’s songs: 745.92 million. It beats the previous record-holder, Post Malone’s beerbongs & bentleys, when it arrived with 431.3 million on the May 12-dated chart. Post Malone now has the second-biggest streaming week.
Drake now has four out of the 10 biggest streaming weeks for an album: Scorpion is No. 1, followed by 2017’s More Life’s debut frame (the No. 3 largest, with 384.84 million), More Life’s second week (No. 6 with 253.49 million) and the opening week of 2016’s Views (No. 7 with 245.09 million).
First Album to Hit 1 Billion Streams for Its Songs Globally in a Single Week: Industry sources previously confirmed to Billboard that Scorpion is the first album to spur 1 billion on-demand audio streams, globally, for its songs in a single week.
Largest Overall Week of 2018 for an Album: Scorpion’s big bow of 732,000 equivalent album units is the biggest week for any album in 2018. It's also the largest since Taylor Swift’s reputation, which started with 1.24 million units at No. 1 (Dec. 2, 2017-dated chart).
The bulk of Scorpion’s starting sum was driven by streams, as it garnered 551,000 SEA units. The remainder of its total unit sum was comprised of 21,000 TEA units and 160,000 in traditional album sales. Drake’s last album, More Life, bowed at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 505,000 equivalent album units total, of which 257,000 were SEA units, 23,000 were TEA units and 226,000 were traditional album sales.
Biggest Week for an R&B/Hip-Hop Album in Over Two Years: Scorpion’s start of 732,000 units is the largest week for an R&B/hip-hop album since Drake’s own Views launched with 1.04 million units at No. 1 (on the May 21, 2016-dated chart). While Scorpion launches with over three times as many streams as Views tallied in its first week (745.9 million vs. 245.9 million), Views was able to earn a bigger overall unit number (1.04 million) because it had a much more robust bow in terms of traditional album sales. Views sold 851,000 albums in its first week, all from digital downloads. (The CD didn’t go on sale until its second week of availability). Comparatively, Scorpion sold 160,000 copies, all via digital download. Scorpion will be issued on CD on July 13.

As expected, Billboard's streaming numbers are lower than HDD's (3%).

Really? It's my understanding that the RIAA actually counts video streams for album units while Billboard doesn't. That was the only way Reputation was able to go triple platinum. But historically, the main premise of the RIAA and Billboard/Scoundscan has always differed for physical units: the former counts shipments to retailers, while the latter only counts direct sales to consumers.

But historically, the main premise of the RIAA and Billboard/Scoundscan has always differed for physical units: the former counts shipments to retailers, while the latter only counts direct sales to consumers. Yeah they do count video streams and shipments while Billboard doesn't. However during the sales-only era if an album did 500k first week on Billboard 200, you knew it was eligible for Gold, since it atleast did 500k units in shipments thus far (or else it wouldn't have sold 500k). If an album did 500K SPS first week on Billboard 200, you also knew it was eligible for Gold, since it atleast did 500k units in shipments + streams/1500. Now they count streams completely different, so the numbers don't guarantee anything. 500K under Billboard, could be 450K with RIAA. You no longer can say something is Gold eligible because it did 500K under Billboard thus far, or Platinum eligible because it did 1 million under Billboard so far. That will be confusing.

This is possibly an unpopular opinion, but does anyone else think their calculation for streaming equivalents is too low?
It seems kind of nuts to me that Drake could have such a record-breaking week for streaming but then "only" have 732k in equivalent sales. The hype and success feels comparable to albums that opened well over 1m in years past.
It seems like streaming has not enough weight on the BB200 and too much weight on the H100...

Yeah, record-breaking streams don't even put this album at reputation levels. Meanwhile the Hot 100 will be a mess Drake-fest.

John Coltrane Earns Highest-Charting Album Ever on Billboard 200 With 'The Lost Album'
News
By Xander Zellner | July 10, 2018 12:31 PM EDT John Coltrane
The set, recorded in 1963, also notches Coltrane his fourth No. 1 on Jazz Albums.
51 years after his death in 1967, jazz icon John Coltrane earns his first top 40-charting album on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart and his fourth No. 1 on the Jazz Albums tally both dated July 14) with his newly discovered set Both Directions at Once: The Lost Album.
The album, which Coltrane originally recorded in 1963 with his Classic Quartet, debuts with 22,000 equivalent album units earned in the tracking week ending July 5, according to Nielsen Music. 21,000 of that sum were in traditional album units, helping the set also arrive at No. 5 on Top Album Sales and No. 1 on the Traditional Jazz Albums charts.
The sales sum gives Coltrane his biggest sales week as a soloist since Nielsen Music began tracking sales in 1991. Furthermore, it's his biggest sales week overall since Christmas week of 2005, when his collaboration with the Thelonious Monk Quartet, At Carnegie Hall, sold 28,000 copies (in the week ending Dec. 25).
Coltrane has earned five additional entries on the Billboard 200. Expression peaked at No. 194 in November 1967; Sun Ship reached No. 186 in November 1971; At Carnegie Hall with the Monk Quartet hit No. 107 in October 2005; Opus Collection: A Man Called Train hit No. 107 in June 2008; and Miles Davis and Coltrane’s The Final Tour: The Bootleg Series, Vol. 6 peaked at No. 187 three months ago in April.
It’s worth noting that some of Coltrane’s most famous albums never charted on the Billboard 200, including 1960's Giant Steps, 1961's Lush Life and 1964’s A Love Supreme (all of which have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame).
The new album also earns Coltrane his fourth No. 1 on both the Traditional Jazz Albums chart and the overall Jazz Albums chart. He previously hit No. 1 with The Final Tour: The Bootleg Series, Vol. 6 and The Final Tour: Copenhagen, March 24, 1960 (both in 2018) and also The Roulette Sides EP in 2016.
The Jazz Albums chart ranks the top selling contemporary and traditional jazz albums of the week in the U.S. Those two sub-categories of jazz are also represented, respectively, on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Albums and Traditional Jazz Albums charts. The former launched in 1987, while the latter list started in 1967.
Coltrane died of liver cancer at the age of 40 in Huntington, New York, on July 17, 1967.

Given that Billboard uses Nielsen's numbers and Scorpion was affected:
Thursday, July 12, 2018
Some biz folks are going crazy over the inconsistency of Nielsen’s metrics when it comes to measuring streams.
During the first few hours after a record drops—after midnight ET but still Thursday in other time zones—why does Nielsen count sales but not streams? It’s long been their policy to add downloads that happen during this three-hour window to a release’s first-week total, but streams aren't counted in that same tally.
This came to a head with Drake’s Scorpion, which came in with 746m streams on the Top 200, well shy of the 770m tabulated by HITS; the discrepancy can almost completely be attributed to Thursday-night streams. Don’t Nielsen and the Bible understand that bigger numbers are better for everyone? What possible rationale could they have for this inconsistent, silly policy?
