Billboard 200 Chart Moves: Ella Mai's 'Ready' Hits Top 40 for First Time
By Keith Caulfield | July 12, 2018 5:06 PM EDT
Let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the rest of the Billboard 200:
— John Coltrane, Both Directions at Once: The Lost Album – No. 21 — Incredibly, this is the first top 40-charting album for the jazz legend. The effort bows with 22,000 units earned, of which 21,000 were in traditional album sales. The latter sum easily grants the title a No. 1 debut on both the overall Jazz Albums chart as well as the Traditional Jazz Albums chart.
— Ella Mai, Ready (EP) – No. 39 — The rising R&B star’s Ready EP, which features her breakthrough hit “Boo’d Up,” hits the top 40 for the first time, as the set climbs 50-39 with 13,000 units (up 21 percent). Concurrently, “Boo’d Up” rises 16-14 on the Radio Songs chart (up 7 percent in audience impressions in the week ending July 8).
— Marvin Gaye, Gold – No. 147 — Marvin Gaye’s 2005 greatest-hits collection, Gold, debuts at No. 147, granting the legend his 28th charting title. He last arrived with a new entry in 2015, when Number 1’s debuted and peaked at No. 175 (March 28, 2015).
— John Mellencamp, The Best That I Could Do 1978-1988 – No. 164 — The rocker’s first hits album bounces back onto the tally at No. 164 — the first time the collection has been on the list since 1999. The album earned 5,000 units in the tracking week (up 26 percent) and posted increases in traditional album sales, SEA units and TEA units. The album benefits from sale pricing and promotion at digital retail. The album peaked at No. 33 in 1997 and features 14 songs: 13 singles that all reached the top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100, plus one then-new track “Without Expression.”
— ABBA, Gold – Greatest Hits – No. 170 — As interest in the new ABBA-inspired film Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again increases, the pop group’s classic greatest-hits album jumps back onto the list at No. 170. The new film is a sequel to the 2008 movie Mamma Mia! Both films were inspired by ABBA's catalog of songs, and the first film adapted the long-running stage musical of the same name.
