I really don't get y'all 99% of the time.
"Round About Way" is my fav George song, what a killer melody and instrumentation and lyrics. I would listen to this for hours on end as a kid! "The Nerve" beating this is an actual tragedy, even tho I do love that song too.

I can't believe my #10 is still in! It is definitely time for that to go.

"Round About Way" is in fact leaving us at #5, as predicted correctly by tim and LBTrocks ! This song was the 4th and final single from the album, but saw no slowdown for the era whatsoever as it flew straight up to #1 in true superstar fashion. This song is catchy, and clever, and I do love it despite my ranking! This whole album is just so good... As many people have alluded to their lower rankings being quite difficult and never feeling quite right, that is definitely the case for me with this song...

"Round About Way" seemed like a rather big hit at the time as it was atop the country charts for two weeks, but looking back I think that had more to do with the momentum he had going into the new year and this song benefited from that. While I still enjoy this one quite a bit, I do have to say I don't find myself actively seeking it out to ever revisit unless I happen to put the album on. It's not that it hasn't aged well per se, but it definitely feels like a song that was put out as a filler single more than anything (if that makes any sense).

This makes sense to me, and I think I feel the same. To me this one has not aged as well as most of his hits from this time period. It's like the production is oddly loud or something. I still enjoy it a lot, and never skip it when it comes on! But I don't get the itch to check it out like I do most of his other big '90s hits.

I’m glad I had the nerve to talk to you that day. I could just as easily have let you get away In that crowded airport, far from my hometown. If I had lost my courage then, you wouldn’t be around. I’m glad I had the nerve.

Well it's about damn TIME! Look, "The Nerve" is great, I love it... but it was the easy last place for me on this album. I HARDCORE struggled ranking the rest of this, but this is the one song that I can skip on the album if I'm listening to it while in a 'hurry' and can't play it all the way through... it was never not going to be my last place. Sorry y'all. But for those of you who think it's one of the best the album has to offer, congrats! Clearly, you're not alone! This did very well for an album track.

Bobby Braddock is such an amazing songwriter and yet I'm still amazed that he's the one that wrote Toby Keith’s “I Wanna Talk About Me"

I just couldn't find myself to leave "The Nerve" outside of my top 5 as it has long been a favorite of mine. It's just one of those songs that you never ever forget about and kind of draws you back in time and time again for more. Whereas George excels on such humorous songs as "I've Got a Funny Feeling", he also does the same here and is able to convey an emotion that reaches the listener that few male country artists can.

It probably comes as no surprise at all that luck would run out for our final album track sooner rather than later once it came down to it vs. the #1 hits... But this song had quite an impressive showing all things considered!!! It started out as a bottom 2 contender thanks to most of its lowest ranks coming in heavy at the beginning, but it managed to climb steadily for the entire rest of the rankdown before settling in at #4 amongst our singles at the last minute. This has always been a standout song for me from the moment I first heard it, and I continue to love it more every time I hear it. I love the melodic structure, and the way the verses have kind of a dark and smoky vibe, interrupted suddenly by that explosive chorus. Vocally, George absolutely nails this one out of the park, and is the perfect vocalist for a song like this. And then lyrically it is unlike any other song I have ever heard. Everyone can relate to the amount of nerve it takes to confess romantic interest in somebody, especially if that somebody is a stranger. We all have thoughts about "what would have happened if I had just worked up the nerve to do ______". On top of it all, this song builds on that theme even further by acknowledging that his father also had just the right amount of nerve, and so did his grandfather, etc. causing a perfect storm of events that led to his life. He is the product of those who loved before him, which is such a beautiful sentiment. For the final cherry on top, I really love how this song is respectful of people's beliefs. Throwing in a verse about God "having the nerve" to create the universe could have come across as really cheesy or campy, but imo the way they handled it is anything but! "With one tiny atom, or an Adam and an Eve, however you look at it, whatever you believe, I'm glad He had the nerve" is such a beautiful line to me. It doesn't just blindly follow Christianity as you would expect from a country song. It is respectful of everyone's viewpoints. George isn't trying to throw God in our face; instead he is saying whether through religion or science, he is thankful that the universe got created at all. It's handled delicately and beautifully, and I have always appreciated that sentiment. Anyway, I'll stop now. Y'all are probably wondering where I went!!

We made it final today. I gave you all I had; you made your getaway. All the love we once made Turned to memories today.
I left the courtroom and went straight to the church. I hit my knees and told God how much I hurt. There’s nothin’ left of my heart. It’s gonna be so hard to make a new start.

I'm trying to find words for how much I ADORE "Today My World Slipped Away" yet I'm coming up blank. It's just... breathtaking. And heartbreaking. The lyrics... wow. That melody in the chorus, KILLS me. It sends chills up my spine. Just a beautiful, haunting, hard-hitting song... I can't BELIEVE this got 2 last place ranks. Like.... what? Can y'all explain yourselves? lol.

Even though I don't relate specifically to the lyrics, "Today My World Slipped Away" makes me all sorts of emotional... I actually cry when listening to this, if I really focus on the lyrics. I know I ranked it only at 4, but it was one of many songs on this album I wanted to put at 1.

Sorry! I didn't realize how much everyone would turn out liking this, but this is one of my least favourite songs of George's. For everyone else's sake, I'm glad one of your faves made it this far though!

It wouldn't feel right not giving Vern Gosdin due credit for his original version of "Today My World Slipped Away", but for biased reasons I obviously prefer George's lol.
