"Won't You Come Home" bows out next, one position after Tim predicted it might. This song has George's signature brand of humor written all over it! The wife hunting him down while he's at the bar would have made for a really funny music video, and the fact that she refers to herself as a stranger because he's been hanging out at the bar so much is both relatable and clever. The scorned wife and the man who just doesn't get it is done a lot in country, but I never really get tired of George's takes on that theme tbh.
Melodically this one wears on me a little quicker than the rest of the album, so I can't listen to it on repeat the way I can with my higher ranked songs, but it is still a song I enjoy every once in awhile!

Oh hey, thanks for not making me reveal this entire album on one page like you did with the Blue Clear Sky rankdown!

I've always had very mixed thoughts about "Won't You Come Home (And Talk To A Stranger)" going as far back as the first time I heard it. As a young boy I just thought the song was a bit too hokey, corny, and whatever other adjective you can find to describe it. And yet after all of these years I still find that I want to revisit the song because there's just something about its quirkiness that works. I'm still not certain I'd put this in last place if I did my list over for the umpteenth time, but if only because of my mixed thoughts about the song did it land down there this time.

I'm actually going to guess that "The Nerve" will exit just shy of the top 5.

I can see you’re fallin’ for her. Friend, you know she once was mine. So I guess I oughta warn you, ‘Cause you’re showin’ all the signs.
She’s a devil, she’s an angel, She’s a woman, she’s a child. She’s a heartache when she leaves you, But she’ll leave you with a smile.
6. "She'll Leave You With A Smile"

Literally me when "She'll Leave You With A Smile" was revealed as the song to miss the top 5 and not "The Nerve"

I actually prefer the title song from this album in comparison to the other song of the same name released on The Road Less Traveled.

"She'll Leave You With A Smile", not to be confused with his 50th #1 hit from a few years later, has always been a standout on this album. To me this sounds like it could have been a HUGE hit in its own right! I have hardly any doubt that they would have gotten a 5th #1 out of this album had they released this as the 5th single. (Although maybe the later one wouldn't have happened if this one had gotten a release. Who knows!)
This one consistently performed better than everything that left before it, and is our first song to settle into any sort of consistency whatsoever. Once it got to #6 it held on comfortably.
I know this feels a bit early for this one to leave, but this at least gets the distinction of being the second highest album track! It will be very interesting to see how this does in the album tracks rankdowns, as I feel like it'll be a strong competitor.

Here is our top 5!!!!
Carrying Your Love With Me One Night At A Time Round About Way The Nerve Today My World Slipped Away
We are down to one more album track, and the four huge hits! How much longer will "The Nerve" last?? Which single is going to succumb first now that there won't be any album tracks to provide a buffer?? Let's see some predictions!

I've long felt like "She'll Leave You With A Smile" was the one hit that got away from this album, but maybe it just wasn't meant to be as fate had alternate plans lol. Nonetheless, this has always my go-to album track from CYLWM and one that I feel like I've only grown to love more with time. I also have no doubt that had they decided to release five singles that this very well would've been another #1 hit for him.
That said, "The Nerve" has always been a favorite ever since the album was released some 23 years ago and so I'm not at all surprised it has managed to find its way into the top 5 as the highest ranking album track.

I think my #4/#5 could easily swap positions but nonetheless will leave in the top 4; the top two is going to come down to either "Today My World Slipped Away" or "One Night At a Time":
5. Round About Way 4. The Nerve 3. Today My World Slipped Away 2. One Night At a Time 1. Carrying Your Love With Me

As far as all my friends can tell, I took her leavin’ well. That’s kind’ve right, ‘Cause when I’m out with them, I don’t let her memory Rule the night. For the most part I’m okay, But I still miss her in a round about way.
Around about the time that midnight rolls around, That’s around about the time my tears start fallin’ down. When she’s not around I come unwound, And my heart breaks. Yeah, I still miss her in a round about way.
5. "Round About Way"
Track #1 Runtime: 3:06 Songwriters: Steve Dean, Wil Nance
