"You Can't Make A Heart Love Somebody" is our next single to leave, taking with it a pair of #1s from Cody Wants Out... and gardyfan . This song is a huge hit! Yes it's one of his 60 #1s. It seems to have been overshadowed through the years by some other songs from the similar time period, such as "Easy Come, Easy Go", "Check Yes Or No", "The Big One", "Blue Clear Sky", etc. but it still was plenty overplayed back in the day. This song portrays such a unique situation. I've always wondered how exactly you find yourself in a situation like this. The male character works up the nerve to propose to his girlfriend in a restaurant, only for her to start crying and say "I'm sorry, I've been trying, but I don't actually love you"... Like, wtf!!! At least she's honest with him rather than agreeing to a lifetime of resentment, but jeez! It seems like for him to think the relationship is going well enough to propose, you could have probably let him know about this sentiment sooner!!! Of course the hook is pure brilliance. "You can lead a heart to love, but you can't make it fall." I never get tired of George's flair for wordsmanship Of course it's similar to the famous idiom "You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink", although imo the hook to this song is WAY better than that silly idiom. In most album rankdowns this probably would have been in the top 2, but in this one it was barely a contender! Our top 2 kinda ran away with it.

Adalida, pretty little Cajun queen. Sweet Dixie flower, the belle of the bayou, You’re every young man’s dream. Adalida, I’d walk through a hurricane. To stand beside you, sweet Adalida, I’d swim the Pontchartrain.
2. "Adalida"
Track #2 Runtime: 3:36 Songwriters: Mike Geiger, Woody Mullis, Michael Huffman
Placement in the Singles Rankdown: #39 out of 100
Without a warnin’, you’re outta control. The ground shakes and the oceans roll. This is the big one; There’s nowhere to run.
On the Richter scale of romance You hit twelve, and you don’t stand a chance. This is the big one; I’m fallin’ in love.
1. "The Big One"
Track #8 Runtime: 2:08 Songwriters: Gerry House, Devon O'Day

There you have it! Our runaway top 2 was the top 2 for practically the entire submission process once "Adalida" recovered from my and tim's #7 ranks early on! However, despite the fact that they were the runaway top 2, they really were not that close to each other. "The Big One" had this in the bag without any trouble whatsoever, despite finishing 11 positions lower than "Adalida" in the singles rankdown. "Adalida" is super catchy, and the cajun flavorings make it very unique. It was a huge hit despite being the only non-#1 on the album, as it peaked at #3 on Billboard. (Like I said before, "Lead On" peaked at #7 on Billboard, but is still considered a #1 because of one of the other charts). Tbh, I am continuously shocked by how much Pulse seems to love this one! It is very unique, which to me means it sounds like it should also be very polarizing. But Pulse's love for it is near unanimous, it seems, based on how it has performed in every rankdown it has ever been in. It will be an interesting one to watch in RotB Part 5!!!! "The Big One" is such a compact and FUN listen!!! Seriously, this song never gets old to me!! The melody and arrangement are both pure ear candy! I love the "And it's beat, beat, beat, my heart's sending out a message" line in particular. It is impossible to listen to that and have it not stuck in your head for the entire day. I actually remember this one being on the radio back when I was a toddler. It was a HUGE hit, definitely the signature hit from the album. I am so excited to see this song finally get its moment in the sun, because this is one of those songs that absolutely deserves to be a rankdown winner, but will probably not get there in a giant year-end rankdown or artist rankdown or anything like that. It's catchy in a way that I could see turning off the people who hate good music just because it's catchy. Thank you all for submitting!!!! Stay tuned for two of his most exciting albums......

Once again the superior single that does better in the big rankdown does worse somehow in the album RD... </3
"Adalida" is one of the best uptempo jams of his entire career. Fortunately, "The Big One" is also a pretty big jam of its own too, so I can't be *too* upset by this outcome.

Wish I could've been on here Sunday evening for the final results, but alas all I could do was watch it unfold on my phone (hence the blank message with the GIF lol). Anyways, going to pick back up where I left off: 9. "I Met A Friend Of Yours Today"bboat11 - 10 I should've guessed that knowing Pulse this song was a sure bet to place in the bottom two, but to see you put this dead last?!? You should really have your George Strait stan card revoked. Anyways, I mentioned that "No One But You" was a bore and it's always been one of my least favorite album tracks from George. When this popped up on the b-side to "The Big One" I honestly probably set my expectations a bit lower going into the album just based on that song alone. Needless to say that worry was for not because I hold this album in pretty high regard now. I was a bit disappointed to see "What Am I Waiting For" out in the bottom 3 because that has always been one of my go-to tracks from the album. Lots of songs written by Jim Lauderdale happen to suit George's style quite well and this song is no exception. I'm kinda sorta, not really surprised though that not everyone was a fan of it. "I'll Always Be Loving You" is an okay album track, but this was an easy bottom two for me because more than not I'd say I skip over this song. I wasn't too surprised to see "Nobody Has to Get Hurt" perform well because it's another album track that I've long enjoyed, but on album as strong as this one it just wasn't able to escape my bottom 3. This is another Jim Lauderdale co-write that as usual you can always find something catchy or quirky to like. I have to say that this was a perfect top five as each one of the songs belonged there. Knowing how poorly "Lead On" performed in George's singles rankdown I set my expectations low here, so I'm pleasantly surprised that it managed to even make the top 5 but not shocked it was the first one out. I remember George saying at one point back then that this was his favorite song from the album so I don't think there was any question as to whether or not it was going to be a single. "Down Louisiana Way" is not only the best album track here, but I'd say is one of his ten best album tracks from the 90s. I felt pretty confident that this would be the top track and I'm glad to see y'all didn't disappoint! There also wasn't much question as to what the final 3 songs would be as they've long been fan favorites, but I wasn't feeling very certain in which way the cards would fall. I had just assumed that "Adalida" would come out ahead because it best both of the other two songs in George's artist rankdown, so its top two showing in turn wasn't a shock. Much like bboat11 , I'm surprised how much of a favorite this is on Pulse! My ranking for this is probably just more reflective of the fact that I've heard this played on the radio since 1994 and still hear it to this day on Texas stations, so for that reason it fell a bit further back on my list because I don't feel the need to revisit it much. I had my fingers crossed that "The Big One" would eke out a win because it's a childhood favorite of mine and it's also the first song I ever called in to request on a country radio station! George never really sang this live much after this tour, however, as I can't even recall ever hearing it myself in all of the times I've seen him. Based on the Las Vegas clip, though, I'd have to guess that it's a bit out of his comfort zone vocally hence why he probably didn't include it much thereafter. Phew...and I'm caught up! And this is why I hate missing the reveals for George's albums

I forgot to add that "The Big One" originally ended with the sound effects of an earthquake rumbling, however George stated he remembered how much he hated the seagulls squawking on "Marina Del Rey" so he asked his producer Tony Brown to take that out lol.

George has mentioned through the years that he pretty much instantly regretted doing that high note at the end of "The Big One", because he felt kinda like Tarzan when he had to sing the song live Can't say I blame him, 'cause that G#4 is definitely out of most of our comfort zones! I can't even imagine trying to do it in front of thousands of people every night, and having to nail it every time!

At long last, we have finally reached the set that George fans have been looking forward to the most!!!! Blue Clear Sky and Carrying Your Love With Me are two of his hardest hitting albums, each one bringing a quartet of MASSIVE hits. It would practically be an understatement to say that these albums launched him into a somehow even higher degree of mega-stardom than he had obtained before. He was one of the big power players on country radio for the majority of the 80s-00s, but THIS stretch right here in the middle was without a doubt his most impactful phase.
Buckle up and settle in, because this is going to be FUN!!!!
We'll try to set a deadline for 3 weeks out. There are literally no rankdowns due in November yet, so y'all should have nothing else to do on Pulse for, like, two of those three weeks :)
Blue Clear Sky (1996)
Tracklist: (Runtime 37 min)
1. Blue Clear Sky 2. Carried Away 3. Rockin' In The Arms Of Your Memory 4. She Knows When You're On My Mind 5. I Ain't Never Seen No One Like You 6. I Can Still Make Cheyenne 7. King Of The Mountain 8. Do The Right Thing 9. I'd Just As Soon Go 10. Need I Say More
Carrying Your Love With Me (1997)
Tracklist: (Runtime 34 min)
1. Round About Way 2. Carrying Your Love With Me 3. One Night At A Time 4. She'll Leave You With A Smile 5. Won't You Come Home (And Talk To A Stranger) 6. Today My World Slipped Away 7. I've Got A Funny Feeling 8. The Nerve 9. That's Me (Every Chance I Get) 10. A Real Good Place To Start Due: November 11, 2020

Sorry for the lack of reminders lately. I have been soooooo slammed this past week with work. And on top of all that, I, like most of us, have been glued to the election! What an insane week it has been!
Things are starting to calm down though, so here we go. This rankdown is supposed to be due in just three days! Remember, I don't want to push it back because I would also like to finish the Extras by the end of the year... So please make these albums part of your day soon!! LBTrocks has already submitted, and he's the one who always keeps us waiting, so....
(I would consider pushing it back a couple days until the weekend if it ends up being necessary. But I would rather not!) Blue Clear Sky Participants: 1. tim 2. LBTrocks 3. George Strait Junkie
4. gardyfan 5. ClevelandRox 6. fearlessarrow Carrying Your Love With Me Participants: 1. tim 2. LBTrocks 3. George Strait Junkie
4. gardyfan 5. ClevelandRox Due: November 11, 2020

With the CMA Awards airing this week I thought this would be a good time to look back on October 1996 which forever cemented George's status as the King of Country:

And for what it's worth his performance of "Blue Clear Sky" at the CMAs in '96 is quite possibly one of his best performances ever:

Blue Clear Sky Rankdown: Results Time!
Final Participant List: (16)
1. tim 2. LBTrocks 3. George Strait Junkie 4. gardyfan 5. ClevelandRox 6. fearlessarrow 7. castleoblivion26 8. someguy 9. .indulgecountry 10. bboat11 11. taylor 12. lady𝓐fan 13. gonecountry 14. Cody Wants Out... 15. kw9461 16. Kanenrá:ke Wow, what a fantastic turnout!!! If any last-minute stragglers try to come in overnight or tomorrow morning, I'll still take them. Otherwise, this is what we've got! We'll start tomorrow afternoon/evening after those who want to make predictions have had a chance to do so!
Questions to get us started:
1) What will be #1?
2) What will be #10?
3) Which songs belong in the top 5?
4) What song will be most polarizing? Least polarizing?
5) Which of the singles will place highest? Where will it place? (Blue Clear Sky, Carried Away, I Can Still Make Cheyenne, King Of The Mountain)
6) Do any of the singles have a chance of missing the top 5?
7) What will be the highest-placing album track? Where will it place?
8) Which album tracks would you prefer to see do the best?
9) Any other thoughts/predictions?

1) What will be #1? “Blue Clear Sky”
2) What will be #10? “Need I Say More”
3) Which songs belong in the top 5? The three singles “Blue Clear Sky”, “I Can Still Make Cheyenne”, and “Carried Away” will all be vying for the top 3 with the fourth single “King of the Mountain” also being very deserving of a top 5 finish despite its lack of success on the country charts; “Do the Right Thing” will likely make it in as the lone album track.
4) What song will be most polarizing? “Rockin’ in the Arms of Your Memory” and “I’d Just As Soon Go” Least polarizing? “I Can Still Make Cheyenne” or the title track
5) Which of the singles will place highest? Where will it place? “Blue Clear Sky” at the top followed by “Carried Away” and I Can Still Make Cheyenne” dueling it out for a top 2 position
6) Do any of the singles have a chance of missing the top 5? Possibly “King of the Mountain” but it should still be able to squeeze in
7) What will be the highest-placing album track? Where will it place? It’s hard to guess but I’ll go with “Do the Right Thing”
8) Which album tracks would you prefer to see do the best? Can I say all of them lol?
9) Any other thoughts/predictions? Knowing that this is the second to last album is a tad bittersweet, but I'm glad that we're ending with two of George's most critically and commercially successful albums. This happens to be one of my more overplayed albums amongst George's discography and therefore I find that I don't often seek it out as much nowadays, but it is still such an earworm. I had a really hard time ranking this as I love each and every one of these songs and so therefore for any first time listeners I forgive you ahead of time for any errors in judgement you might have had in your rankings.

1) What will be #1? I have a hard time seeing anything but “I Can Still Make Cheyenne” hitting the top, but maybe that is because I have such a soft spot for Wyoming
2) What will be #10? “Rockin’ in the Arms of Your Memory” was a snoozer IMO
3) Which songs belong in the top 5? “Blue Clear Sky”, “I Can Still Make Cheyenne”, “Carried Away” “King of the Mountain” all are pretty solid top 5, IMO. “Do the Right Thing” or perhaps " "I Ain't Never Seen No One Like You"
4) What song will be most polarizing? “King of the Mountain” Least polarizing? “I Can Still Make Cheyenne”
5) Which of the singles will place highest? Where will it place? "I Can Still Make Cheyenne” is ICONIC, but perhaps “Blue Clear Sky” squeak out a win somehow
6) Do any of the singles have a chance of missing the top 5? Maybe "King of the Mountain”
7) What will be the highest-placing album track? Where will it place? Really no clue, but I'm guessing it will land at #4
8) Which album tracks would you prefer to see do the best? "I Ain't Never Seen No One Like You"
9) Any other thoughts/predictions? Really solid album. After listening to all these albums for these rankdowns, I'm going to say that two of the albums I go back to the most are "Strait from the Heart" and "Right or Wrong"
