I admittedly have an aversion to Christian music... which is simply a relatability issue. I can't relate to lyrics of worship. But when a song (vocal, production, whatever) manages to get me in my feelings, I'm open to it. Jars of Clay did it a couple times in the 90s. That "I Can Only Imagine" song kinda crept into my feelings (even if I felt emotionally manipulated in the process). It may be the Adele-esque quality of this record, but I do like it. She's a talented vocalist. Does she have any songs that aren't all about Jesus? Asking for a friend. Nah, she's pretty blatantly Christian in all of her music really. But she has several other songs that are the same caliber as "You Say". Here are some of my favorites from her first album if you're looking to check out some more of her stuff: Then her Christmas album is also INCREDIBLE. Very classic jazzy sound while still sounding modern. She's an amazing vocalist:

Hot 100: #77 (+8)
According to Headline Planet, a Hot AC station added this. Her label needs to take this opportunity to cross over.

Yes, the song is clearly Christian, but it is empowering and inspirational and timely. It's a sad day in my opinion when you have to say "but" after labeling a song Christian as to why it can crossover. Back in the days of Sam Cooke and Elvis Presley, Christian songs were expected and delivered routinely. I know plenty here disagree, but the message is never dated.

Back in the days of Sam Cooke and Elvis Presley, Christian songs were expected and delivered routinely. I know plenty here disagree, but the message is never dated. America is less Christian than it's ever been. And a lot of people prefer secular music. But even as an atheist, I can enjoy songs like this and "Dear God" by Hunter Hayes. As long as it's not a message "you're gay and you're burn in hell hahaha!" I don't really care. Positive messages are generally fine. Why the sudden boost on iTunes? No clue. But it could have made #1 if not for the VMAs.

As much as I get Adele vibes from this, I actually had no idea that Lauren is Christian, until I read up on her. I am so sold! Beautiful voice, beautiful lyrics, beautiful soul that pours forth. I will stan if the rest of the album is anywhere near this. Rolling Stones is just OK.

#12 on iTunes behind 11 BTS tracks. Would be #1 if not for them.

I saw this on the iTunes charts at #2 and was like, who is that. Couldn't believe how much she sounds like Adele. You could definitely fool someone into thinking this was Adele. I also was shocked when I realized it was a Christian artist/song. The lyrics make it clear this is a Christian song but the sound and production is so much more mainstream. Christian songs always have this clear sound to them and she really breaks the mold here.

I was just online sampling her previous albums and this cover pose reminded me of Ray of Light. Anyway, she does have a nice voice and I do like the jazzy sound of her Christmas album. Christmas Time Is Here is really nice. It does sound like what I imagine an Adele holiday album would sound like - I know, I know, the comparisons are probably annoying for fans. But they've got a very similar tone and timbre(?)

Someone wrote a review saying “shame on her” and that she copied Adele.
She can’t change her voice :( People need to chill.

I mean, it's not just her voice...You Say and Keep Rolling Stones are (good) rip offs of Adele.

I'd have to agree that musically as well, there are similarities. There's another Christian song when it comes on I keep thinking that it's One Republic. If this song takes off, that controversy will surely follow.

Which song reminds you of Onerepublic?

It's the musical style as well.

That's interesting because Ryan Tedder has always sounded like CCM to me, his melodies sound very much like Chris Tomlin or Hillsong, and he uses similar vocal techniques to a lot of worship leaders/singers. A lot of his productions are CCMish as well (mix of live and programmed drums, Acoustic Guitar for rhythm low in the mix, layers of simple electric guitar parts, not huge emphasis on the bass, simple piano arpeggios throughout etc.) I know Ryan grew up in church and with Christian music, so i wouldn't be surprised if its not coincidental!

Sales for this are great, but without streaming or radio crossover, this won't get much higher.

Hot 100: #55 (+1) Sales for this are great, but without streaming or radio crossover, this won't get much higher. It's been top 100 on US Youtube for a while now (it looks so out of place in the chart full of hip hop songs). It's doing better currently on US Youtube than Travis Scott - STARGAZING and Ariana Grande - Breathin', for example: charts.youtube.com/charts/TopSongs/us So it's not doing awfully. But yes, it needs to do better on Spotify and Apple Music.

Her album could get around 100,000 units. I wonder where "You Say" will be album week.
