Drake's 'Scorpion' Set for Second Week at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Chart, Future Aiming for Top 3 News By Keith Caulfield | July 11, 2018 7:58 AM EDT
Drake’s Scorpion album should easily secure a second straight week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart next week, according to industry forecasters. Prognosticators suggest the set will earn over 300,000 equivalent album units in the week ending July 12. The album bowed atop the list dated July 14 with 732,000 units earned in the week ending July 5 — the largest week for an album in 2018.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The top 10 of the July 21-dated Billboard 200 chart (where Drake will likely hold at No. 1) is scheduled to be revealed on Billboard’s websites on Sunday, July 15.
If Scorpion secures a second week frame of over 300,000 units, it will log the biggest second week for an album in over two years. The last set to log more than 300,000 units in its second stanza was Drake’s own Views, which earned 313,000 units in its second stanza at No. 1 on the May 28, 2016-dated chart. The previous week, the album blew in with 1.04 million units.
Further, if Scorpion holds at No. 1, it will become just the fourth album to log multiple weeks atop the chart in 2018. It would follow Post Malone’s beerbongs & bentleys (three straight weeks at No. 1), Black Panther: The Album (three nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1) and The Greatest Showman soundtrack (two weeks in-a-row at No. 1).
The highest debut on next week’s Billboard 200 chart will likely be Future’s streaming-only album Beastmode 2. The set, released on July 6 via Freebandz/Epic Records, may earn around 60,000 units, and likely bow at No. 3. If Beastmode 2 arrives in the top 10, it will grant the rapper his ninth top 10 effort.
Post Malone’s beerbongs & bentleys will likely be sandwiched between Scorpion and Beastmode 2 with around 70,000 units earned.
The chart’s second highest new arrival may come from Meek Mill with his new four-song Legends of the Summer EP. The set, released through Maybach/Atlantic Records, could start in the lower part of the top 10. The effort is his first new album since his release from prison in April.

For the sake of comparison, 25 managed 1.16 million equivalent album units and 1989 402 thousand in their second weeks in the Billboard 200.

Can’t really compare 2nd weeks for albums released without streaming or even albums released with streaming that came out even a year ago.

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/8465460/drake-scorpion-second-week-at-no-1-billboard-200Drake's 'Scorpion' Scores Second Week at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Albums Chart7/15/2018 by Keith Caulfield Plus: Future and Meek Mill debut in the top 10. Drake’s Scorpion holds at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart for a second week, logging the biggest sophomore week for any album in more than two years. The set earned 335,000 equivalent album units in the week ending July 12 according to Nielsen Music (down 54 percent from its big start of 732,000 units a week earlier). Of its second week sum, 29,000 were in traditional album sales. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units are comprised of traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new July 21-dated chart (where Scorpion stays steady at No. 1) will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on Tuesday, July 17. Scorpion Spends Second Week at No. 1: Scorpion is only the fourth album to log multiple weeks at No. 1 in 2018. It follows Post Malone’s beerbongs & bentleys (three straight weeks at No. 1), Black Panther: The Album (three nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1) and The Greatest Showman soundtrack (two weeks in a row at No. 1). Largest Second Week for an Album in More Than Two Years: As Scorpion earned 335,000 units in its second week, it tallied the largest sophomore stanza for an album in over two years. The last set to log a larger second week was Adele’s 25, which earned 1.16 million units in its second week (chart dated Dec. 19, 2015). Third-Largest Streaming Week for an Album: Scorpion’s second week is fueled largely by its streaming activity, as the set collected 288,000 SEA units, which equals 390.98 million on-demand audio streams. That latter figure is the third-largest weekly streaming sum for an album’s tracks. The largest was earned by Scorpion in its debut frame (745.9 million), while the second-biggest was Post Malone’s opening week with beerbongs & bentleys (431.3 million) earlier in 2018. Drake’s 23rd Week at No. 1: As Scorpion spends a second week at No. 1, Drake’s cumulative total of weeks at No. 1 rises to 23. Notably, out of his eight No. 1 albums, only three have spent more than a single week at No. 1: Scorpion (two so far), More Life (three, 2017) and Views (13, in 2016). The only hip-hop artists with more total weeks at No. 1 are Eminem (with 32) and JAY-Z (with 25). At No. 2 on the new Billboard 200, Post Malone’s former No. 1 beerbongs & bentleys moves up one slot with 71,000 units (down 2 percent). Future’s streaming-only album Beastmode 2 debuts at No. 3 with 57,000 units (73.5 million streams), granting the rapper his ninth top 10 and the highest-charting streaming-exclusive album. It surpasses Chance the Rapper’s Coloring Book, which debuted and peaked at No. 8 on the June 4, 2016-dated list. It bowed with 38,000 units (57.3 million streams). XXXTentacion’s ? moves 5-4 on the new Billboard 200 with 51,000 units (down 16 percent), Cardi B’s Invasion of Privacy climbs 6-5 with 44,000 units (down 6 percent) and Juice WRLD’s Goodbye & Good Riddance is up one spot to No. 6 with 41,000 units (up 4 percent). The Greatest Showman soundtrack rises 11-7 with 30,000 units (down 6 percent) and The Carters’ Everything Is Love is steady at No. 8 with 29,000 units (down 21 percent). Meek Mill scores his fifth top 10 effort, as his four-song Legends of the Summer set arrives at No. 9 with 26,000 units (6,000 in album sales). The effort is his first new album since his release from prison in April. The rapper previously visited the top 10 with Wins and Losses (No. 3, 2017), DC4 (No. 3, 2016), Dreams Worth More Than Money (No. 1 for two weeks, 2015) and Dreams and Nightmares (No. 2, 2012). Closing out the new top 10 is Lil Baby’s Harder Than Ever, rising 12-10 with 27,000 units (down 6 percent).

Future's 'Beastmode 2' Becomes Highest-Charting Streaming-Only Album on Billboard 200 7/15/2018 by Keith Caulfield
A little more than a year after Future became the first artist to achieve back-to-back No. 1 debuts on the Billboard 200 albums chart, he now earns the highest-charting streaming-exclusive album on the tally. His new effort, Beastmode 2 -- which is only available on streaming services -- starts at No. 3 on the July 21-dated chart. The set was released on July 6 via Freebandz/Epic Records.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units are comprised of traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new July 21-dated chart will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on Tuesday, July 17.
Beastmode 2 arrives at No. 3 with 57,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending July 12 -- all from SEA units. The nine-track set was not released to purchase, nor were any of its tracks available to buy through digital retailers. Beastmode 2 launches with 73.5 million on-demand audio streams. The launch not only gives the artist his ninth top 10, but also the highest-charting streaming-exclusive album. Previously, Chance the Rapper’s Coloring Book held the record for the highest-charting streaming-only set when it debuted and peaked at No. 8 on the June 4, 2016-dated list. It bowed with 38,000 units (57.3 million streams). Coloring Book was the first streaming-only album to reach the top 10.
Here’s a look at Future’s nine top 10 albums on the Billboard 200: Title, Peak Position, Peak Date Pluto, No. 8, May 5, 2012 Honest, No. 2, May 10, 2014 DS2, Aug. 8, 2015 What a Time To Be Alive (Drake & Future), No. 1, Oct. 10, 2015 Evol, No. 1, Feb. 27, 2016 Future, No. 1, March 11, 2017 HNDRXX, No. 1, March 18, 2017 Super Slimey, No. 2, Nov. 11, 2017 Beastmode 2, No. 3, July 21, 2018

^With that the new lowest pure sales for a #1 in Top Album Sales is finally set this week by Scorpion. I don't think the record will last as long as it did for The Descendants soundtrack.

Wow Scorpion did MORE on Billboard than HDD, why it was the opposite last week probably because of this. and soundscan have more offline store and extra sales estimation thing, so more physical sales. HDD had 7k less SEA, I guess they have less service counted?

The top 6 tracks on Scorpion have gained 13% streams from Sunday to Sunday, mainly due to In My Feelings, meanwhile the remaining 19 tracks only lost about 32% streams. With IMF reaching its ceiling, the top tracks will probably lose around 10-15% next week, but that still means close to 250k SPS for week 3. I'm kinda wondering if he'll block Nicki and Ariana from debuting at #1...

Ariana's last album was blocked by Drake from hitting #1 and her lead single, NTLTC from debuting at the top.
Her last album debuted at #2, behind Views with 175,000 units (129,000 pure)

I don't think Scorpion can block Nicki and Ariana, although those are still several weeks away. It requires another gigantic streaming smash next to IMF.
And Kenny Chesney can very well be #1 in two weeks, Songs for the Saints is out on July 27. Does anyone know if he'll have a ticket bundle?

The ticket bundle is still for his live album not Songs for the Saints. However new tour legs are always a possibility. On a somewhat related news, Chris Stapleton's From A Room: Volume 2 fell off this week.

Thanks to oldbloke @ukmix for sharing this article about the record low set by Scorpion in pure sales (at this point it applies also to digital album sales, so replace physical copies with pure sales throughout the article):
Published on July 16th, 2018 | by Alan Cross
If you had any lingering doubts about the battle between CDs and streaming, this should sort things out. Almost no one bought CDs (or any new physical music) in America last week.
If you total up all the sales in the Top 200 on the US SoundScan chart, only 412,229 units were purchased in a country of 320 million.
The Top 10 features some insanely low numbers. Drake debuted at #1 with 29,354 physical copies of Scorpion.
And no, that’s not a typo. I had to look three times before I believed my eyes.
Let me state that again: The biggest single contemporary artist on the planet right now had a #1 record by selling less than 30,000 physical copies in the biggest music market in the known universe.
Not that Drake cares, of course, because Scorpion has been heard millions and millions and millions of times through streaming, delivering far more revenue that he’d ever see from physical sales.
Yes, it was a weak release schedule thanks to the July 4th holiday, but still…
Here’s the full Top 10 on the US SoundScan chart:
Drake, Scorpion (29,354 physical units sold) Various Artists, The Greatest Showman soundtrack (16,412) Panic! At the Disco, Pray for the Wicked (11,861) Gorillaz, The Now Now (9,774) Florence + the Machine, High As Hope (8,430) Taylor Swift, Reputation (8,174) Jason Alden, Rearview Town (7,861) Post Malone, Beerbongs & Bentleys (6.756) John Coltrane, Both Directions at Once (6,490) The Carters, EVERYTHING IS LOVE (6,118)
A few more things to note about physical music sales in America so far this year.
Despite being America’s music power couple, Beyonce and Jay-Z’s album (The Carters) has sold just 102,000 physical units. It was possible to make the US Top 200 SoundScan last week by selling just 572 records. Only eight albums in the Top 100 have sold more than a million copies. Only two (Tay-Tay’s Reputation and Traveller from Chris Stapleton) have sold more than 2 million.
It’s even worse in Canada. Drake finished at #1 by selling just under 2,900 copies of Scorpion. In all of Canada. For an entire week. Of those, exactly 471 were sold in his hometown of The 6.
Even with the Foo Fighters coming into the Rogers Centre for a show in front of 50,000 fans didn’t move the needle much on their latest album, Concrete & Gold. It sold 201 units in Toronto last week. Beck’s visit to Toronto generated 42 new sales of Colors throughout the city.
It was possible to make the Top 10 on SoundScan in Canada last week by selling just 778 CDs. That was Ed Sheeran’s Divide, by the way.
But here’s the most shocking number: All it took to make the Top 200 SoundScan chart in Canada last week was 82(!!!) CDs. I’ve seen bands sell more discs off the stage at the end of the night.
Bottom line? When someone brags about something hitting #1 on SoundScan, ignore them. It means nothing. Almost literally nothing.

For the first time, the entire top six albums and nine out of the top 10 are rap titles.
For the first time ever, the top six albums on the Billboard 200 chart (dated July 21) are rap sets, while a record nine rap titles populate the top 10. The chart reflects the top 10 most popular albums in the U.S. in the week ending July 12.
The record rap run in the top 10 was encouraged by a slim release schedule on July 6, absent of any major pop, rock or country albums, along with rap’s dominance with streaming services.
The lone non-rap effort among the top 10 is at No. 7: the pop soundtrack to The Greatest Showman.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).
The Billboard 200 dates back to 1956, when Billboard launched its first regularly published weekly albums chart, Best Selling Popular Albums. The chart would eventually become known as the Billboard 200.
Leading the way on the July 21 Billboard 200 chart is Drake’s Scorpion, which sits at No. 1 for a second week. Post Malone’s former No. 1 beerbongs & bentleys is No. 2, followed by Future’s debuting Beastmode 2 at No. 3.
XXXTentacion’s ? is No. 4, while Cardi B’s Invasion of Privacy and Juice WRLD’s Goodbye & Good Riddance are at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively.
Skipping past Showman at No. 7, The Carters’ Everything Is Love ranks at No. 8, followed by Meek Mill’s arriving Legends of Summer at No. 9 and Lil Baby’s Harder Than Ever at No. 10.
As previously reported, R&B/hip-hop is the most popular genre of music in the U.S., according to Nielsen Music. At the mid-year point (reflecting the tracking period of Dec. 29, 2017-June 28, 2018), the genre held a 31 percent marketshare of the combined sector of album sales, TEA and SEA on-demand audio and video. (On-demand video streams are not counted towards the tabulation of Billboard’s album charts.)
In the first half of 2018, equivalent album units (album sales plus TEA plus on-demand SEA) for the R&B/hip-hop genre totaled 70.13 million -- up 21.6 percent as compared to the first six months of 2017. R&B/hip-hop on-demand streams (audio and video combined) grew 46.3 percent to 121.3 billion.

Wow this really puts things into perspective about how irrelevant album sales have been. The fact that a 500k sales debut could be outselling the next top 200 albums combined... It's interesting because there's no such thing as "Album Artists" vs. "Single Artists" anymore - if you can sell singles, you default to longevity on the albums chart. For example, 10 years ago, "Low" by Flo Rida sold 7 million+ copies, and his album barely scanned 100k. It'd be a different story now - he'd be platinum by the sales of Low alone.
