What do you think is the weakest song that won SOTY at the Grammys. Taking into account the actual song from a songwriting perspective (lyrics, melody). Don't look at chart success, if a more deserving song lost, your opinion of the artist, how many writers wrote it, whether it's iconic or not, etc. Just the actual songwriting. Lets look at the winners of this century:
2000 Smooth 2001 Beautiful Day 2002 Fallin 2003 Don't Know Why 2004 Dance With My Father 2005 Daughters 2006 Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own 2007 Not Read To Make Nice 2008 Rehab 2009 Viva La Vida 2010 Single Ladies 2011 Need You Now 2012 Rolling In The Deep 2013 We Are Young 2014 Royals 2015 Stay With Me 2016 Thinking Out Loud 2017 Hello 2018 That's What I Like

I've seen a lot of people on various forums name "Single Ladies" as the weakest example of songwriting. So I'm curious to hear what others feel.

I'd rank them as such, in terms of songwriting. The song is parenthesis is the nominated song that "should have" won that year
1 Rehab 2 Not Ready to Make Nice 3 Rolling in the Deep (All of the Lights but this is fine) 4 Royals 5 Hello (this or Formation) 6 Fallin 7 Viva la Vida 8 Smooth (Unpretty) 9 Single Ladies (Poker Face) 10 Need You Now (this or F**k You) 11 Beautiful Day (Say My Name) 12 We Are Young (Call Me Maybe) 13 Don't Know Why (A Thousand Miles) 14 Thinking Out Loud (Alrght) 15 Sometimes You Can't Make it On Your Own (Ordinary People) 16 That's What I Like (horrible set of nominees, I don't know) 17 Daughters (Jesus Walks) 18 Dance with my Father (Lose Yourself) 19 Stay With Me (Chandelier)

The weakest in terms of songwriting in my opinion are easily Single Ladies and Stay with Me. All the others are great songs from a songwriting perspective. Stay with Me is decent as a song and is a pretty good record given Sam's performance. Single Ladies... uhh... idk why that's there.

None of these are bad, though "Dance With My Father" may have been overrated due to sentiment (Luther was incapacitated due to a stroke at the time, and died a year later). And while I think the attacks on the Dixie Chicks for criticizing the Almighty Dubya were total BS, I think giving them Song, Record, and Album of the Year was a bit much.
But a decent case can be made for all of these, even if I would have personally voted for others. Regarding "Single Ladies", I'd have voted for "Use Somebody" on that ballot, but the Beyonce song is fine and arguably iconic, even though one can argue it wasn't really one of 2009's best (as opposed to most popular or meme-worthy) songs.
Before 2000, some of the weaker choices IMO are "You Light Up My Life" (not bad, but geez, 10 weeks at #1? Talk about overrated); "Don't Worry Be Happy" (basically a novelty hit that got old fast); "Unforgettable" (classic song, but songs written 40 years earlier really shouldn't be picked even if they became hits again that year); and "My Heart Will Go On" (another that quickly fell into the "ENOUGH ALREADY!" file)

I actually find a lot of these to be poor, especially lyrically.
I'm surprised at all of the hate for "Single Ladies." The line "If you like it then you shoulda put a ring on it" is more iconic than the writing in most if not all of the other winners.

"Single Ladies" definitely. Probably followed by "That's What I Like", then "Stay With Me".

Yeah that line is iconic but I find the lyrics the most basic of all the nominees and melody the weakest. Still a great record though but it's mostly the production and vocal that take it there.

I agree with all that you said and was surprised "SL" was in Song and "Halo" in Record, but between that iconic line and also the general construction of the song I don't fully hate the win. Plus, that type of song rarely wins, so it was a nice surprise. I actually liked that entire group of nominees.

Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own
Then maybe Stay With Me (in the same year as Take Me to Church).

I'll go with Thinking Out Loud. It is a cutesy wedding song, but not much more. I think he has much better songwriting in his trajectory.

Single Ladies is a great record, but it's not a great song - at least in the way that the Grammys typically uses those terms. Four people were able to make a catchy jam with some catchphrases, but if I strip it down to just the lyric, it doesn't stack up. It's more about the production and Beyonce's sass than the songwriting, for me anyway.

"Stay With Me" or "That's What I Like".
People, educate yourself about Urban music before you dragged the hell out of "Single Ladies"!"

Single Ladies, should have been nominated in Record of the Year and not Song of the Year and won there. Really trite and meh song writing.

I won't say it based on quality but on success. I don't think TWIL is suitable for SOTY considering it never hit #1.

Is that not what this award is for? I don’t agree it’s the weakest but I agree that it’s a good *record*, not a great *song* and should have won the former category if anything.
