I really like most of the album. After "Midnight Sky" (which I adore) and "Prisoner" I hoped she would serve more of that on the album, and I got my wish. She's found her niche in this music echoing early-80s new wave/rock. Good for her.

First listen review of Plastic Hearts.1. WTF Do I Know (8/10) | Pull through modern day Ashley Tisdale! The chorus is so explosive. Some of the melodies remind me of "Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)". A great opening to the album. 2. Plastic Hearts (7/10) | Interesting intro. Wow the chords in the chorus sound very retro. The post-chorus is great. The song is very Halloween-esque imo. Yesss guitar solo A grower overall. 3. Angels Like You (8/10) | Wow this is sooooo '70s. I love the chorus. I could see this on Younger Now so much. I thought this would be more rock leaning. Okay, the song is slowly building. It went from The Beatles to "Already Gone" Kelly Clarkson. I had high expectations for this from the snippet so it's gonna be a grower. 4. Prisoner (9/10) | pretends he's never heard of this song even though he's been jamming to it for an entire week The transition from "Angels Like You" was... interesting. The song is a banger though. 5. Gimme What I Want (9/10) | YES DISTORTED BASS. I want more of this please. This is probably my favorite so far. This is like a Hannah Montana song remixed to sound like Arctic Monkeys... and that's a compliment. Brb, gtg jam real' quick. 6. Night Crawling (8/10) | Oh wow. I was wrong before, this is the Annie Lennox moment. What a banger. I'm gonna need a minute to get used to the '80s synths. 7. Midnight Sky (10/10) | I don't think she will top this and that's okay. Other artists wish their magnum opus was as good as this. The perfect lead single. 8. High (8.5/10) | This is a beautiful listen. This would also make a great closing track. I have to listen to the closing track first to see though lol. 9. Hate Me (8.5/10) | Interesting beat. Very late '90s imo. This will probably end up as one of my favorites. 10. Bad Karma (9/10) | Oh God I've been waiting for these moans since January 1st, 2020. Omg Joan Jett snatching wigs on a fucking Friday Was NOT expecting that bridge. Very in-your-face. 11. Never Be Me (8.5/10) |I'm loving this. It feels so modern yet it has obvious 80s references. The chorus is probably the weakest part imo and it's not even weak. I missed that kind of mid-tempos from her. This will be a moment live. 12. Golden G String (9/10) | And we're back to the '70s. This song is great for the winter. The echoing beat reminds me of something but I can't put a name to it. Got it. It's Chariots of Fire. This is honestly top 3 of the album for me. 13. Edge of Midnight (9.5/10) | I thought no remix of "Midnight Sky" would ever get a decent score from me... until this came out. What a breath of fresh air. Love their chemistry. 14. Heart of Glass (8.5/10) | Such a good song. And she did it justice. I'm glad it brought Miley a new wave of (mostly rock listening) fans. I only gave this an 8.5 cause I don't want it to surpass the new songs just because of familiarity 15. Zombie (8.5/10) | Same with "Heart of Glass". Also, I used to love this song as a kid. RIP Dolores. First listen rating: 85,4% (12 tracks) // 86% (15 tracks) First listen review: I really enjoyed this first listen. I can't wait to put the record on repeat. I actually thought it was going to be more rock but it actually delivered a significant amount of mid-tempos and ballads. Her vocals are great as always. Hope it's a hit for her

Truly incredible, stunning, stellar album. I'm gonna give it a few more listens before I do any track-by-track review, but this is her best work. I can't pick a favorite or least favorite. Miley Cyrus was truly made for rock music and I hope she keeps this genre with her for a very long time. Worthy of the 2022 AOTY Grammy. A+ from me. Wow.
LOVE THE DUETS (and "Edge of Midnight" grew on me too)

Absolutely fantastic album. I loved every single track. There are two things I do wish were a bit different. First, Gimme What I Want ends abruptly when it should’ve been extended for few more seconds to die down. Second, Golden G String needs a longer outro.
But again, this is an amazing album, and these are just two minor changes I would’ve done personally.

It’s only my first listen through, but this is definitely one of my top albums of the year. There’s not a single song that’s a skip & she really seems to have found her ground with this retro-inspired pop-rock thing.
Initial favorites: WTF Do I Know Midnight Sky Night Crawling Hate Me Plastic Hearts

Ok, here's the thing. I've never listened a Miley album before, but have always appreciated her voice. I've watched some of her live performances lately and thought rock suits her very well. I'm on track #4 now and I must say I'm really impressed. It kind of give me Breakaway vibes (which is probably the best compliment I could give to an album)!

So, to be abundantly clear, this is AOTY. No question. Full thoughts later, but this throttled every other major release this year. Easily.

I've always enjoyed Miley, but I've never fully liked any Miley album. This is definitely her best work. It sounds like an album I'll be listening to for a very long time. This sound is perfect for her voice. All the 80s collaborations were fun as well (Billy Idol, Stevie Nicks, Joan Jett).

Highlights
Angels Like You Prisoner (feat. Dua Lipa) Midnight Sky High Bad Karma (feat. Jon Jett)
Everything else sounds like it has the potential to grow on me. Overall this a solid effort, I hope the first week numbers are favourable.

So, to be abundantly clear, this is AOTY. No question. Full thoughts later, but this throttled every other major release this year. Easily. I recently started reading Notes to Myself by Hugh Prather. Dug it out of my (limited) library to find that my aunt gave it to my mother in the 80s, don’t know how I ended up with it, but the subtitle stood out to me: “My struggle to become a person.” I think that could have just as easily worked as an alternate title for Plastic Hearts. This is lyrically chaotic in a human condition kind of way. I’m honestly shocked that the same woman who dropped Bangerz and Dead Petz, Christ, put this out so casually. This album works so incredibly well as a Miley Cyrus album that her older records may as well be completely disregarded in their entirety. It’s as definitive as it is in the moment (for her, anyway), grappling with rediscovering oneself amidst loss, encapsulated in a genre famous for this sort of thing. I was initially surprised by the sequencing of it, more lyrically than sonically, but a few listens through and it makes more sense. Processing grief is not linear. If the album is telling a story, it doesn’t finish it either. I’m not sure it should; that ambiguity begs the question of whether or not “moving on” is a fool’s errand. That’s probably not intentional, but that’s how I interpreted it. Earlier, I read a comparison to Breakaway. I think that comparison is, frankly, bad, but in fairness I also think Breakaway is bad. It’s supposed to be a cathartic album, but it’s painfully dull and whiney. Where Clarkson was bemoaning everything around her, Plastic Hearts forces Cyrus in front of a mirror. They’re both deeply personal records, but Hearts went to press without the restraint that a rushed sophomore album like Breakaway had to have. One possible result of that, and it’s a stark contrast, is that Miley is not a victim here. Hell, she’s the villain, or at least that’s how she sees it. The only track that feels out of place is “Golden G String”. I don’t really understand how it fits in with the album thematically, and honestly now that I’ve heard the album in it’s entirety “Slide Away” would’ve been a fine replacement for it. At the very least, “G String” could have been relegated to a bonus track. It’s not bad, sonically fits right in, just really out of place (and a little... I don’t want to say preachy, but I don’t really care about her world view). One dud tacked on at the end, and I’m using “dud” loosely, out of twelve very strong cuts is much better than most artists can say of their work though. I couldn’t even pick out highlights because they’ll likely change overnight, and everything is so consistently good, but the immediate standouts are “WTF Do I Know,” “Angels Like You,” “Night Crawling,” “Bad Karma,” and “Never Be Me.” Even “Prisoner,” which I was initially quite cold on, clicked with context. It’s digestible, personable, even relatable; folklore is the only other major release that even came close, but it doesn’t have nearly as much going for it as a complete body of work. This is, again, my AOTY. It’s not even close.

^ Yeah I agree, I like Golden G String but it doesn't really fit on the record lyrically It feels out of place and I do think Slide Away could have closed the record
Either that or I'd remove Golden G String and add Mother's Daughter somewhere in the first half since I think it fits the album too Only other option is the scrapped Win Some Lose Some which would also still work on the record too

The album works so well as is that I trust anything that was left off was done so for a reason. Not sure I agree with “Mother’s Daughter” being on the album, lyrically or sonically. This is not an empowerment album. The closest cut that comes to that is “Midnight Sky”, but even that belies some level of insecurity. All these things she’s doing, that she wants to do, that she can do, she’s only doing them to prove she doesn’t need to be loved by someone else... which breaks character in a pretty big way. It’s not about her, it’s about them. She’s trying to convince herself it’s not.

Miley seriously outdid herself with this album. Wow! This rock sound is perfect for Miley and I wouldn’t mind if she continues exploring this sound.
Midnight Sky and Prisoner are still both pop gems. And I absolutely love the title song Plastic Hearts. Some of my other favorites include WTF Do I Know, Gimme What I Want, Night Crawling, and Hate Me. I personally preferred the first half of the album over the second half, but it’s an overall extremely strong album.
Also, I love the 3 bonus covers/remixes at the end of the album. Miley sounds so natural on all of those covers. This is definitely one of my favorite albums of the year and I think I might be a Miley stan now!
The pop girls have done nothing but serve quality this year <3

This is a VERY strong album. I am still partial to Miley's Bangerz era, but this is better and more...HER, I feel. That said, she is a capable chameleon. After ignoring Younger Now or whatever the hell it was called, I am glad to be back for a full Miley project. Having pretty much one team of producers and writers helped this greatly, as well. I'm glad I ignored whatever I read that said this sounded like 90s pop rock because literally NOTHING here sounds like that, LOL and I wouldn't want it to because that is easily one of my least favorite genres. I wish this had made the Grammy cutoff because if they f**k up the single releases, this will probably be forgotten for Grammys 2021 and it should be a frontrunner. Anyway, here we go:
1. Angels Like You (What. A. f**king. Song. This will go down as a classic from her and easily a career highlight.) 2. Midnight Sky (I can see why this was the first single. Still potent. I DO wish they had just went with the Stevie Nicks remix though. That's the version I really listened to first and now I can't un-hear it, but even on its own, this song goes hard.) 3. Never Be Me (I am a SUCKER for songs in this style. Gives me Drive by The Cars vibes, which is one of my ALL-TIME favorite songs.) 4. High (f**k, why is she bringing it THIS hard on this album??) 5. Night Crawling (WHOO CHILE! This slaps! I grew up with a mom who loved Billy Idol though. What an inspired pairing.) 6. Gimme What I Want (sexy, 80s, radio-friendly, gives me I Want Your Sex by George Michael vibes mixed with Closer by Nine Inch Nails) 7. Prisoner (This is a jam and a great choice for a single, especially with It Girl Dua on it.) 8. Golden G String 9. Plastic Hearts 10. Hate Me 11. WTF Do I Know 12. Bad Karma

Now that I've given the album a closer listen in full, I wanna give a (short because I'm not good at writing whole essays about individual songs lol) track-by-track review. Here goes:
WTF Do I Know (10/10): Perfect opening to this album. One thing I really love about "Midnight Sky" is the (without album context) feeling of empowerment the song gives off and "WTF Do I Know" seems to give off a similar vibe. This song does an incredible job of setting the scene for the album and the kind of music people are in for. That instrumental bridge between the final two choruses is HEAVENLY.
Plastic Hearts (8/10): This one took awhile to get fully into tbh. BUT it is still incredible. I love Miley's vocal delivery of the chorus, and again that instrumental bridge between the final two.
Angels Like You (1000000/10): Very easily one of Miley's best songs on record, period. The vulnerability is staggering and the lyrics are incredible and the vocal delivery is perfect and the chorus is heavenly and this song better be a f**king single I SWEAR TO GOD.
Prisoner ft. Dua Lipa (9/10): In context of the album, this song does a great job of continuing the story of getting over this person she left. The line distribution is great, and the melody is so infectious. RADIO BETTER DO THIS ONE JUSTICE DAMNIT.
Gimme What I Want (10/10): THE DISTORTED BASS!!!!! THE CHORUS!!!!! THE DELIVERY!!! One of my absolute favorites and I hate that it's only 2:30. :'(
Night Crawling ft. Billy Idol (9/10): Miley x Billy delivered!!! Love the chorus to this one too and that yowl from Miley towards the end added 20 years to my life expectancy!!
Midnight Sky (10/10): This song would've been a massive staple had Miley been one of the 80s rockstars in real time. I still never tire of it. That baseline is delicious and it's yet another chorus that Miley hits the bullseye on. This also made a great lead single, because having not heard the album one might feel that this is more of an empowering song. However, listen closely to the album and you find by now that this song is a total façade. I can't explain it as eloquently as Koochie did so just refer to him because basically...everything he said lol.
High (9/10): I love this second show of real vulnerability. I particularly adore the second verse; WOW did I feel that part. Miley did some great runs throughout this song!
Hate Me (9/10): Sometimes I feel the lyrics to this song lol, the chorus especially, of which I adore the delivery.
Bad Karma ft. Joan Jett (8/10): Get these features Miley!!! I really enjoyed this song, but during the verses I couldn't get past that strange "ah-oh-oh-o-AH-ah" that kept going on. It just felt really weird and hindered my overall enjoyment of the song by just a tad if I'm being quite honest.
Never Be Me (10/10): THIS is the final track of the album. I don't know what the hell a golden g string is but it's not the final song on this record. That's what "Never Be Me" is because...it's just perfect. The story this album has been telling up to this point ends here, and I ADORE the way it ends, with the chorus twisting on itself. Suddenly, Miley hopes she can be everything the person she's singing to needs and is willing to try her best to stay. It's really beautiful.
Golden G String (6/10): Again, I don't know what this is because it's not on my copy of this record. Imo, this song is great but has nothing to do with the album and very easily could've (and quite frankly should've) been left off. Doesn't even feel like an epilogue; it just sticks out like a broken--not just sore--thumb.
The three bonus tracks: All stellar, all 10/10. I said in a different thread when it was first released that "Edge of Midnight" felt un-needed but it has since grown on me and at least makes a good bonus track. "Heart of Glass" and "Zombie" both snap hard, and both original artists loved them. The Cranberries themselves said Dolores would've loved it. Enough said; Miley Cyrus is a F**KING ROCKSTAR.
Again, all in all this is an A+ record that had BETTER be nominated for the 2022 Grammy Awards. They have become stale and useless these days, and low-key always have been to a certain extent, and they NEVER (or at best not always) define artistic merit, but damnit Miley deserves AOTY and anybody at the Recording Academy who thinks otherwise must be ousted immediately. I'm gonna be jamming to this record for QUITE some time, and I really hope Miley sticks with this genre/sound from here on out, because it really can't be stressed enough that this is her sound.

Y’all are bold grading and ranking these songs. This album works so well as a complete body of work that I honestly don’t see myself revisiting a lot of these individually, bar “Midnight Sky” and “WTF Do I Know.” I’d almost say “Gimme What I Want” too, but why would I ever separate it from “Night Crawling?” Its so hard to rank them, much less grade them, on their individual merits because each one sounds so essential to the whole. Absolutely wild to me that “Prisoner” came to life the way it did on the album when I felt absolutely nothing for it when it debuted as a single.
Except “Golden G String,” that’s been made abundantly clear, but even that isn’t a bad song necessarily.

This album is absolute gold. Bop after bop after bop. The first seven songs are bliss. The remaining five (outside of Hate Me) are a bit meh but still good. I can’t decide what my favourite is yet. Either Night Crawling, Plastic Heart (next single!), Hate Me or WTF Do I Know. Miley absolutely delivered on this. Lyrics, production, vocals, all her layers of background vocals. I haven’t been in love with an album this much since Future Nostalgia. Stuck on repeat

As a closer on an album that is the most unapologetically HER, Golden G String is a PERFECT closer and sums everything up nicely. Very Miley and a great way to end the story.
Also, I REALLY wish the Midnight Sky with Stevie was the main version of the song. It just makes sense. They also should have tacked on the covers on the Target version, at least.
