Dire Straits- Money For Nothing, The Rolling Stones- Brown Sugar, Nirvana- Rape Me, Rod Stewart- Tonights The Night. The DJ 45 edit of "Money For Nothing" pretty much cleans up the song and shortens the LP version significantly as it runs 4:05.

That was controversial when it was released, less than a decade ago. Became a hit anyway (it may have helped that Mark Foster didn't make it that easy to understand all the lyrics).

I didn't realize how many hits have (implicitly or explicitly) promoted statutory rape... Wild Joan Jett was 24 singing about taking a 17 year old she picked up in a bar home in I Love Rock N Roll. Of course, Alan Merrill who wrote the song in 1975 was also 24 singing about taking a 17 year old girl home...

"Half Breed" by Cher. Cher has no Native American ancestry so everyone would rag on her for cultural appropriation. Same thing with "Dark Lady" where she talks about being a gypsy psychic witch, which is a tired ass sterotype which will be ripped apart by twitter today.

Stan by Eminem. I think the lyrical content towards women would cause alot of controversy The whole plot of the song is that Stan is psychotic. There might be some but it would die down fast

Besides, Eminem was controversial back then too.

Ricky Nelson - "Travelin' Man" (1961). The whole song is ethnic stereotypes and objectification of women.
And similar lyrically, but in a totally different style and era, Jay-Z's "Girls, Girls, Girls".

And similar lyrically, but in a totally different style and era, Jay-Z's "Girls, Girls, Girls". Girls Girls Girls is way worse than Travelin' Man, although I agree. It's definitely problematic for a white man to be singing a song about having a crew of nonwhite women at his beck and call, but Girls Girls Girls is like next level. Jay refers to Indian Women as red dots, calls an African woman "Ms. Fufu", has a line about dumping a Chinese girl for selling bootlegs of his records, and one about a girl from Peru smuggling drugs. Like, that shit would never get on a the radio today.

Whitney Houston - "Miracle" (1991). No way that song gets recorded by a secular artist today. Much less reaching #2 R&B/HH, #9 H100.
