The annoying pattern with album bombs is that the opening track(s) always debut the highest, which means it's essentially people checking the album out passively and not returning who get these "hits" so high. Also, "Butterfly Effect" was a bonafide radio hit in the fall but because it's so "old," it re-enters in last place. It'll go down in chart history books as the smallest "hit" from the album based on peak when in reality it'll end up as one of the better known.

I guess Sicko Mode ended up being the Astroworld's biggest debut largely thanks to Drake's uncredited rap.

Zedd, Maren Morris & Grey's 'The Middle' Breaks Record For Most Weeks at No. 1 on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs Chart
8/14/2018 by Gordon Murray
Plus, moves for Loud Luxury, REZZ, Tony Moran & more.
Zedd, Maren Morris and Grey's "The Middle" sets a new standard for the most weeks at No. 1 in the five-and-a-half year history of Billboard's Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart, remaining atop the tally (dated Aug. 18) for a 28th frame.
Dating to the January 2013 inception of the chart (which blends streaming, radio airplay and sales data), "The Middle" stands above all, eclipsing The Chainsmokers' "Closer" featuring Halsey, which led for 27 weeks in 2016-17. Avicii's "Wake Me Up!" ranks third with 26 weeks at No.1 in 2013-14.
Grey, Zedd and Maren Morris, attend the 2018 Billboard Music Awards at MGM Grand Garden Arena on May 20, 2018 in Las Vegas. Read More Zedd, Maren Morris & Grey Talk 'The Middle,' Remember Avicii at Billboard Music Awards: Watch
Two other tracks have lead Hot Dance/Electronic Songs for 20-plus weeks: The Chainsmokers and Coldplay's "Something Just Like This" (25 weeks, 2017) and Major Lazer and DJ Snake's "Lean On," featuring MØ (23 weeks, 2015-16).
"The Middle" leads Dance/Electronic Streaming Songs for a 27th week (10.3 million U.S. streams in the week ending Aug. 9, according to Nielsen Music) and Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales for a 25th week (8,000 sold).
TALKING "BODY": Also on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs, Loud Luxury completes its slow build toward top 10 status, lifting 12-10 with "Body," featuring Brando. The first top 10 for both acts, "Body" breaks into the chart's upper tier in its 37th week; only Galantis' "Runaway (You & I)" took longer to reach the top 10: 40 weeks, reaching the region in July 2015.
HIGH REZZ: REZZ rolls in at No. 12 on Top Dance/Electronic Albums with Certain Kind of Magic, her third and highest-charting effort. The LP opens with 2,000 equivalent album units, with half from traditional album sales. The latter sum sparks the set's No. 1 launch on Dance/Electronic Album Sales, where it's the Canadian DJ/producer's first leader. REZZ (real name: Isabelle Rezazadeh) previously appeared on Top Dance/Electronic Albums with the EP Something Wrong Here (No. 18, October 2016) and Mass Manipulation (No. 16, August 2017).
MORAN'S NINTH NO. 1: DJ/producer Tony Moran and featured singer Jason Walker top Dance Club Songs for a ninth time with "I'm in Love With You" (2-1). Walker earns his fifth No. 1 and third via a Moran collab, following "So Happy" (June 2016) and "Say Yes" (December 2016). "Love" was remixed by Rosabel, Mauro Mozart, and Dinaire + Bissen, among many others.

"KISS" ON THE LIST: Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa lift 2-1 to lead Dance/Mix Show Airplay once again with "One Kiss." It's the track's ninth non-consecutive week at No. 1, dating to its first frame in top on June 2. Plus, Post Malone parades 13-6 with "Better Now," becoming the rapper's fifth top 10.

How did the middle outpeak closer .. a 12 week number 1.. and closer was better on streams, AirPlay, and sales when it was charting?? Is it because there’s less competition this year in dance/electronic charts

Weezer's 'Africa' Cover Hits No. 1 on Rock Airplay Chart
8/14/2018 by Kevin Rutherford
The band earns its first leader on the list, as the track tops Alternative Songs for a second week.
Weezer tops Billboard's Rock Airplay chart for the first time with its cover of Toto's "Africa."
The remake, which concurrently leads Billboard's Alternative Songs airplay chart for a second week, rises 2-1 on the all-rock-format Rock Airplay survey with 10.9 million audience impressions (up 7 percent) in the week ending Aug. 12, according to Nielsen Music.
Weezer posts its first Rock Airplay No. 1 (which began in 2009, about 15 years after the band first made a Billboard chart) with the song; the four-piece peaked at a previous No. 3 best with "(If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To" in January 2010.
"Africa" is the first cover to rule the Rock Airplay ranking. Toto's original topped the Billboard Hot 100 in February 1983.
Concurrently, "Africa" spends a second week atop Alternative Songs, where it became Weezer's first No. 1 since 2008 and the first remake to reign since 311's update of The Cure's "Love Song" in 2004. "Africa" also ranks at No. 38 on Adult Alternative Songs.
Elsewhere, "Africa" becomes Weezer's second top 10 on Adult Pop Songs, rising from No. 11 to a career best-tying No. 8. Previously, the band reached No. 8 with "Beverly Hills" in November 2005.
On the all-format Radio Songs chart, "Africa" ascends 43-36, marking Weezer's first top 40 hit since "Hills" reached No. 17 in October 2005. The band also hit the chart's top 40 with "Buddy Holly" (No. 18) in 1995.

Brett Young's 'Mercy' Extends Country Airplay Reign, Old Dominion Turns 'Key' Into a Top 10 Hit
News
By Gary Trust | August 14, 2018 4:56 PM EDT Brett Young, Mercy
Brett Young's "Mercy" holds at the summit of Billboard's Country Airplay chart (dated Aug. 18), increasing by 4 percent to 40.1 million audience impressions in the week ending Aug. 12, according to Nielsen Music.
Co-penned by Young and Sean McConnell, "Mercy" is Young's third total and consecutive Country Airplay leader, all of which have now ruled for multiple weeks. "Like I Loved You" led the survey dated Jan. 3 for its first of three weeks on top, after "In Case You Didn't Know" reigned for two frames in June 2017. Young's debut song, "Sleep Without You," peaked at No. 2 in December 2016; all four songs are from Young's eponymous 2017 debut LP.
"'Mercy' is the last song we recorded for the album and I always knew it was something special," Young tells Billboard. "Sean and I wrote it from such a raw place and I hoped it would connect with fans in the way that it has. I'm proud of all of my songs, but this one digs deep and I think that it's the perfect last single before album two."
Young's next single, "Here Tonight," is due in September as the first taste of his next LP, expected later this year.
Notably, 14 of the 22 Country Airplay No. 1s in 2018 before "Mercy" spent a single week in the top spot. The last artist before the 37-year-old Young -- who hails from Anaheim, California -- that logged three or more consecutive multi-week Country Airplay No. 1s? Blake Shelton, who posted five straight such leaders (counting singles promoted to country radio, not including holiday fare): "Honey Bee" (four weeks, 2011), "God Gave Me You" (three, 2011), "Drink On It" (two, 2012), "Over" (two, 2012) and "Sure Be Cool If You Did" (two, 2013).
On Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart, which blends airplay, streaming and sales data, "Mercy" climbs 4-2 for a new high. Bebe Rexha and Florida Georgia Line's "Meant to Be" leads the list for a record-extending 37th week. During the duet's reign, five songs before "Mercy" reached No. 2 peaks: Thomas Rhett's "Marry Me," Jason Aldean's "You Make It Easy," Kane Brown's "Heaven," Dan + Shay's "Tequila" and Kenny Chesney's "Get Along."

I’m not sure why anyone gets bent over songs going recurrent - they’ve already peaked and are below the 25 or 50 threshold. No impact whatsoever on that track’s peak, etc. In fact, bombs actually provide opportunity to flush out dead weight. It’s too bad BB hasn’t rolled out a comprehensive tracks chart similar to album chart - say a Top 200 that would include recurrents. I don’t really that much of a difference between a catalogue album and a recurrent song - especially with streaming being a large component of both. There was a discussion about this recently, and I think it's as simple as Billboard not wanting a chart to compete with their flagship Hot 100, for one. And more than that, it's not really something the industry is asking for, because as you mentioned, recurrency has no impact whatsoever. So watching songs linger around on a super comprehensive chart seems like a waste of time, specifically for an industry-targeted publication. Thoughts? Well, reccurency absolutely does have an effect on songs for purposes of tallying up points for the Year-End, Decade-End, and All-time charts, etc., as well as bragging rights for passing certain thresholds, such as "this song has spent this many weeks in the top 40," "this song has spent over a year on the chart," etc. But I do think the bragging rights and peak position are probably more important than the year-end/all-time rankings, for the vast majority of even hardcore pop music listeners probably don't remember or even look at them at all. Like, besides us, I bet no one goes, "oh this song was #5 for 1996 - that was a huge hit, but this other one - only #35, flop!!" Maybe the #1's might matter the most for year-end, but especially who wins the Billboard Music Awards, because as that is (at least up until this year) a televised performance, it receives the most audience, and it's easier to remember or look up who won each award. It's a bit confusing now since the awards use a different tracking year than the year-end rankings, but I'd still bet most people remember the awards more.

I wish there was no recurrent rule but if there wasn't one, I'd probably wish one existed.

It's a bit confusing now since the awards use a different tracking year than the year-end rankings, but I'd still bet most people remember the awards more. I know and understand everything you said, and I agree. I should have been even more clear, as the "recurrency has no impact whatsoever" was meant from the label's perspective, as the Hot 100 is a tool designed for the industry. All these longevity stats aren't really a thing that labels focus on or use. They focus on what's being currently/actively worked, not what's lingering around for record amounts of time. Same goes for year-end tallies and awards - these things aren't part of the week-to-week purpose of the Hot 100 as a tool - they are perks that come long after the fact. It's really just about getting a song to its highest peak and doing what they can to keep it there, and then moving on to the next single. Recurrency, specifically on the radio charts, is actually beneficial for the labels, because it allows the focus to shift and maximize the potential of the new and active single on the charts. If the labels had a huge problem with recurrency rules, they probably wouldn't exist. It would be great to see a comprehensive chart each week as a chart nerd, but from Billboard's perspective as an industry publication/tool, I don't think it's going to happen. There's no real viable reason for it to exist within the industry.

The "tallying up points" for year-end charts concerns only happens in threads like this. All time rankings and other stats too.
Reality is few outside of people like us when chart runs get cut off because of a recurrent rule, will care.

The predicted "future number one" aka Don't Matter to Me drops out of Hot 100 after five weeks Why is that surprising? It was originally slated as a single and got pulled after "In My Feelings" became a viral blockbuster, so of course it's not going to perform as well as its predictions based on a cancelled single release. It'll be back if they choose to promote it later on.

I think most Scorpion tracks have already burned up enough demand that reaching #1 is not likely for any of them, even with radio.
Then again, I said the same thing about "I Like It" and here we are.

Hot 100 Chart Moves: Travis Scott Lands Two Top 10s, Ella Mai and Juice WRLD Debut
8/17/2018 by Gary Trust
Plus, DJ Khaled's all-star 'No Brainer' drops 5-11 but gains in airplay.
As previously reported, Drake's "In My Feelings" logs a fifth week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (dated Aug. 18). Notably, the song decreased in streams in the first full tracking week following the Aug. 2 premiere of its official video, after it had been heavily driven in recent weeks by the viral "In My Feelings" challenge.
Plus, Travis Scott debuts two songs in the Hot 100's top 10, "Sicko Mode" and "Stargazing," at Nos. 4 and 8, respectively, as parent set Astroworld launches at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart.
Who else makes noteworthy Hot 100 chart moves this week?
"No Brainer," DJ Khaled feat. Justin Bieber, Chance the Rapper & Quavo The collaboration drops to No. 11 on the Hot 100 following its No. 5 debut a week earlier, but gains in airplay. The track falls 5-17 on the Streaming Songs chart (23 million U.S. streams, down 23 percent, according to Nielsen Music) and 2-13 on Digital Song Sales (14,000 downloads sold, down 65 percent).
After making the highest debut of 2018 on Radio Songs, "No Brainer" bounds 28-20, up 29 percent to 46.3 million in airplay audience. On Rhythmic Songs, it surges 15-10 as the chart's Greatest Gainer (up 39 percent in plays), becoming Bieber's 12th top 10, Khaled's eighth, Quavo's fourth and Chance the Rapper's third.
"Beautiful," Bazzi feat. Camila Cabello The track debuts at No. 60 on the Hot 100, as it jumps 48-19 on Digital Song Sales (12,000, up 78 percent), while adding 9.8 million U.S. streams and 3.9 million in radio audience.
Bazzi, the opening act for multiple dates on Cabello's Never Be The Same Tour since its April kickoff, tallies his second Hot 100 entry, after debut hit "Mine," which reached No. 11 in April (and now ranks at No. 35).
"Trip," Ella Mai, "Lean Wit Me," Juice WRLD As Ella Mai and Juice WRLD continue in the Hot 100's top 10 with their first respective top 10s, each debuts new tracks. Mai bows at No. 79 with "Trip" and Juice WRLD arrives at No. 87 with "Lean Wit Me."
The former begins with 7.2 million U.S. streams and 9,000 sold (as it debuts at No. 31 on Digital Song Sales), while the latter starts with 10.9 million clicks and 1,000 sold.
Juice WRLD's "Lucid Dreams" holds at No. 7 on the Hot 100 after reaching No. 3 and Mai's "Boo'd Up" ranks at No. 10 after rising to No. 5.
