With zaclord 🌈 's submission we are now officially at 10 participants (80's Ladies had 13 so I'm still hoping to exceed that mark). His list narrows that gap between the #1 and #2 songs to just 12 points and also changes up the top 5 a bit. Looking at the bottom 5 it has been going back and forth between a few different songs but nonetheless it's beginning to become more clear what songs are going to be rounding out near the bottom of the rankdown. The top 10 could really change course with just even a few more submissions so make sure not to procrastinate much longer! Participants:1. tim 2. George Strait Junkie 3. rgreen0625 4. austin 5. Kanenrá:ke 6. someguy 7. castleoblivion26 8. BlueShades874 9. Cody Wants Out... 10. zaclord 🌈

Finally got my list in. Incredible set of songs. Probably half of these are #1-worthy imo, and there were only about 3 that I found meh/skippable compared to the rest of the set, but nothing "bad" at all.

Our latest submission from .indulgecountry made for quite an interesting list as we now have another song sitting atop for first place while a previous song that was holding onto the #1 position for over five submissions is now fighting for third place. We also have a new song inside the top 10 that hasn't been there before which knocked out another song that has been a consistent top 10 performer for most of the time until now...leave it to him to change up everything This is a reminder that this is due MONDAY, DECEMBER 31ST (yes, that means TOMORROW). If any of the previous participants from the 80's Ladies of Country rankdown need more time (that includes bboat11 , sabre14 , BackwoodsBarbie , dub , Glove Slap , and LBTrocks ) let me know and we can work that out, otherwise I do plan on closing this out as I've given plenty of time to get this done! There's a chance it could be one song that I put in my 30s, but I know there's no way it's in my bottom 10 because looking at all of those, surely none of them are contenders for #1 in this.

A truly incredible decade, spent more time revising my list after ranking them. I doubt my #1 makes it far

There have been five additional submissions since yesterday which saw some surprises and shakeups along the way with one list that is bound to stir up a bit of controversy later in the rankdown. The top 5 has all but settled in and barring any changes from a last minute submission there is now a clear frontrunner for #1 that has been in the top 10 the entire time. The bottom 5 hasn't seen many changes overall, however one song was given a lifeline and rescued from finishing there. We are up now up to 17 submissions and so this a reminder that this is due TONIGHT. Again if any of the previous participants from 80's Ladies of Country ( sabre14 , BackwoodsBarbie , dub , Glove Slap ) would still like to participate let me know as I probably won't be presenting until Thursday so that still leaves a small window for y'all to get this in and maybe get us up to 20 lists! I'm horrible at this, since it requires knowing Pulse's opinions of different artists enough to make a good guess, but here goes:
1) What will be #1 and what other songs will be Top 5 contenders? "Strawberry Wine." "Fancy," "Wide Open Spaces," "Does He Love You" for others at the top.
2) What will be #51 and what other songs will round out the Bottom 5? "When You Are Old," "Girls With Guitars," possibly "Guys Do It All the Time"?
3) Only three songs held the #1 position at one point in time or another. What were those three songs? "Strawberry Wine," "Fancy," "Wide Open Spaces."
4) The winner of the 80's Ladies Rankdown Reba McEntire is competing yet again for the throne of 90's Ladies. Will she be able to win again? I hope so, but there are so many great songs that nothing would surprise me.
5) Which one of the two sisters featured (Shelby Lynne and Allison Moorer) will place higher? Lynne.
6) Of the three singer-songwriters showcased (Kim Richey, Matraca Berg, Gretchen Peters) who will place highest and lowest? Peters for last. Not as sure about first, but I'll go with Richey.
7) Were there any discoveries from the 90's that you really liked? "Outbound Plane." "I Wanna Fall in Love" and "He Thinks He'll Keep Her" weren't new to me, but it might have been since the '90s since I last heard them and I enjoyed rediscovering them.
8) Who is your favorite 90's Lady of Country and why? A tossup between Reba and Sara Evans. Not only did they put out some of their best work in the '90s, but they're still making music I love 2 decades on.

1) What will be #1 and what other songs will be Top 5 contenders?
I think "Strawberry Wine" will be #1. I could see "Fancy" also taking #1. Both of those will be Top 5 along with "You Can Feel Bad", "He Thinks He'll Keep Her", and "Whatever You Say" (Martina BETTER be Top 5 with my absolute favorite from her!!!)
2) What will be #51 and what other songs will round out the Bottom 5?
Not really sure what will be #51 but I think it'll be between "You'd Think He'd Know Me Better". "You Really Had Me Going", "Feelin' Kind of Lonely Tonight", "Baby Take A Piece of My Heart", and "Now That's All Right With me"
3) Only three songs held the #1 position at one point in time or another. What were those three songs?
"Strawberry Wine", "Fancy", and "He Thinks He'll Keep Her". I could see "Wild One", "XXX's and OOO's", or "You Can Feel Bad" also being one of the 3.
4) The winner of the 80's Ladies Rankdown Reba McEntire is competing yet again for the throne of 90's Ladies. Will she be able to win again?
Absolutely! I'll be shocked if "Fancy" is not in the Top 3 minimum
5) Which one of the two sisters featured (Shelby Lynne and Allison Moorer) will place higher?
I think Allison Moorer will place higher but not by much. I think both will be eliminated before the halfway mark.
6) Of the three singer-songwriters showcased (Kim Richey, Matraca Berg, Gretchen Peters) who will place highest and lowest?
I think "When You Are Old" is gonna place the highest but I could see "That Train Don't Run" doing slightly better. I think "Just My Luck" will be the lowest.
7) Were there any discoveries from the 90's that you really liked?
"Dark Horse". I always loved Mila Mason's "Closer To Heaven" but had never heard "Dark Horse".
8) Who is your favorite 90's Lady of Country and why?
This question is hard because there are so many that I love and choosing one to be my favorite gets harder and harder as the years go on. Martina McBride has always been my go to favorite but Patty Loveless is just incredible and I love Suzy Bogguss, Faith Hill, Jo Dee Messina, Pam Tillis, and Deana Carter as well.

1) What will be #1 and what other songs will be Top 5 contenders? "Fancy" or "Strawberry Wine" would be guess. "Stand Beside Me" will probably be pretty high, too. Maybe "When You Say Nothing at All" and "Wide Open Spaces" up there as well.2) What will be #51 and what other songs will round out the Bottom 5? Something more obscure, like "Lucky in Love" or "Just My Luck" is my guess. Thinking "You'd Think He'd Know Me Better" will probably be near the bottom too.3) Only three songs held the #1 position at one point in time or another. What were those three songs? Guessing the two I predicted for the win, plus maybe "Wide Open Spaces."4) The winner of the 80's Ladies Rankdown Reba McEntire is competing yet again for the throne of 90's Ladies. Will she be able to win yet again? I think there's actually a solid chance of this happening, honestly.5) Which one of the two sisters featured (Shelby Lynne and Allison Moorer) will place higher? Allison Moorer.6) Of the three singer-songwriters showcased (Kim Richey, Matraca Berg, Gretchen Peters) who will place highest and lowest? Kim Richey will be lowest imo. I think the other two could be close, but I'm hoping Matraca is the highest.7) Were there any discoveries from the 90's that you really liked? "Walking Away a Winner" was my favorite discovery.8) Who is your favorite 90's Lady of Country and why? Sara Evans, for obvious reasons. ... though if we're going by an artist who actually peaked/had most of their success in the 90s, then my favorite is Deana Carter.

Even though I'm the host I want to answer the last two questions 7) Were there any discoveries from the 90's that you really liked? While I grew up with country radio in the 90s there were still a handful of songs I had all but forgotten about. The first one that stands out is Bobbie Cryner's "You'd Think He'd Know Me Better" because that's the one song that I probably like more now than I did back then. And although Kelly Willis resides in Austin, I had all but forgotten about her early career in country music when Nashville tried to turn her into a star. I can't say I really remember hearing or seeing the video for "Baby Take a Piece of My Heart" back then, but it's another song that I ended up liking quite a bit. 8) Who is your favorite 90's Lady of Country and why? This is a hard one to answer, but looking back during that time I was most influenced by the music of Reba and Tanya Tucker. My mom was a fan of both and I remember her playing Tanya's What Do I Do With Me album quite a bit. Reba's Read My Mind remains one of my fall time favorite albums from the 90s and it's one I still play from time to time to this day. I also remember the first time I heard Mindy McCready's "Ten Thousand Angels" and just being taken away...her debut album is another that I played nonstop back then. As I've grown, though, I'm now more influenced by the likes of Mary Chapin Carpenter who I honestly never really listened to much back when I was younger. I suppose her lyrics resonate differently with me now and I've come to appreciate and respect her craft.

1) What will be #1 and what other songs will be Top 5 contenders?
"Wide Open Spaces", "Fancy", "Strawberry Wine", "Stand Beside Me", and I have no clue for a fifth. I honestly, have little idea of this is going to go. 2) What will be #51 and what other songs will round out the Bottom 5?
"Dark Horse", "A Soft Place to Fall", "I Will Be There For You", "Single White Female", and "Please"
3) Only three songs held the #1 position at one point in time or another. What were those three songs?
"Fancy" and "Strawberry Wine" Drawing a blank on the third.
4) The winner of the 80's Ladies Rankdown Reba McEntire is competing yet again for the throne of 90's Ladies. Will she be able to win again?
Considering that I am apparently tanked the consistent number one rank at the last minute, I would say no. I know I probably ranked "Fancy" way lower than most.
5) Which one of the two sisters featured (Shelby Lynne and Allison Moorer) will place higher?
Shelby Lynne
6) Of the three singer-songwriters showcased (Kim Richey, Matraca Berg, Gretchen Peters) who will place highest and lowest?
Highest - Gretchen Peters Lowest - Kim Richey
7) Were there any discoveries from the 90's that you really liked?
I really loved the Pam Tillis song "All the Good Ones Are Gone". I generally enjoy Pam Tillis, but I have never really explored her discography and feel like I need to now. The song itself is just so relatable even if I'm only 25 right now...I'm sure if I'm still single 10 years from now it will be even more so. All that being said, I probably over ranked it way too much.
8) Who is your favorite 90's Lady of Country and why? Not sure really. Martina McBride is one of my favorites, but that has more to do with her having memorable/large amount of output post millennium than in the 90's. Although, I must say that I enjoy her 90's output much more than her post 2000's output overall. I was never really past the age of 6 in the 90's so a lot of these songs were new to me, as well as quite a few of these artists.

1) What will be #1 and what other songs will be Top 5 contenders?* Hmm, this rankdown was stacked with potential winners imo, so I can't really provide an accurate guess on what'll win this thing. However, I feel fairly confident that Reba will be in the top five. I'm also anticipating Deana, Shania, and Faith will be in the top five. 2) What will be #51 and what other songs will round out the Bottom 5?* I think either Jessica or Allison will be in last place, and Kim, Kelly, and Sherrie will round out the bottom five. 3) Only three songs held the #1 position at one point in time or another. What were those three songs?* "Strawberry Wine", "XXXs and OOOs (An American Girl)", and "Fancy". 4) The winner of the 80's Ladies Rankdown Reba McEntire is competing yet again for the throne of 90's Ladies. Will she be able to win again?* Actually, I think she easily has top ten in the bag, but I have a feeling there'll be some hardcore competition for the top spot so I don't think a second win here is a guarantee. 5) Which one of the two sisters featured (Shelby Lynne and Allison Moorer) will place higher?* Please oh PLEASE let it be Shelby! 6) Of the three singer-songwriters showcased (Kim Richey, Matraca Berg, Gretchen Peters) who will place highest and lowest?* Highest: Gretchen. Lowest: Kim. 7) Were there any discoveries from the 90's that you really liked?* "Give Me a Ring Sometime" and "Dark Horse" were my favorite discoveries and "Lucky in Love" grew on me a little bit also. 8) Who is your favorite 90's Lady of Country and why?* SHANIA TWAIN! I am head over heels in love with the attitude and personality she brings in her music and she always looks flawless doing it too!

1) What will be #1 and what other songs will be Top 5 contenders?
I think Wide Open Spaces, Strawberry Wine, Stand Beside Me, When You Say Nothing at All and He Thinks He'll Keep Her are all top 5 contenders. Based on how well it did in 1998 rankdown I think Wide Open Spaces has a chance to win.
2) What will be #51 and what other songs will round out the Bottom 5?
#51 will be When You Are Old. Other songs that will end up in bottom 5: You'd Think He'd Know Me Better and Soft Place to Fall
3) Only three songs held the #1 position at one point in time or another. What were those three songs?
Open Spaces, Strawberry Wine, Stand Beside Me
4) The winner of the 80's Ladies Rankdown Reba McEntire is competing yet again for the throne of 90's Ladies. Will she be able to win again?
I hope not. Her best song was part of 80's rankdown and it was a deserving winner.Based on a fact that Fancy didn't even make it into top 5 of Reba McEntire rankdown I sure hope that it won't make it into the top 5 of this rankdown.
5) Which one of the two sisters featured (Shelby Lynne and Allison Moorer) will place higher? Shelby Lynne
6) Of the three singer-songwriters showcased (Kim Richey, Matraca Berg, Gretchen Peters) who will place highest and lowest? Highest - Matraca Berg Lowest - Gretchen Peters
7) Were there any discoveries from the 90's that you really liked?
You'll Never Know is my favourite discovery of this rankdown. I knew a few Mindy McCready songs before this rankdown and I only really liked Ten Thousand Angels so I was pleasently surprised by how good You'll Never Know is. Other good discoveries are (also counting songs that I heard before but I started to like them now): You Can Feel Bad, Better Things To Do, One Way Ticket, That Train Don't Run, Outbound Plane...
8) Who is your favorite 90's Lady of Country and why?
Dolly Parton - she is simply the best. For longer answer read the 80's ladies rankdown. I think she released some amazing albums and songs in the 90's and majority of them are really underrated because she was already past her commercial peak (this statement is even more true for the 2000's and 2010's). The Grass Is Blue (1999) is one of my all time favourite albums.

I'm going to make some predictions. I didn't get a chance to listen and rank these unfortunately and I'm really bummed because these 90s ladies are everything. Please tag me in the reveals :)
1) What will be #1 and what other songs will be Top 5 contenders? I'd like to see "Wide Open Spaces," "Wild One," "No One Needs to Know," "When You Say Nothing at All," and "One Way Ticket" in the top 5. BUT I could also see "Strawberry Wine" and maybe "Fancy" in the top 5? Not sure what will be #1. I'd probably put Dixie Chicks or Faith Hill there.
2) What will be #51 and what other songs will round out the Bottom 5? Literally I don't know but I would guess the Kinleys and Bobbie Cryner in the bottom? The stuff that's not on Spotify.
3) Only three songs held the #1 position at one point in time or another. What were those three songs? My official guesses are "Wide Open Spaces," "Strawberry Wine," and "When You Say Nothing at All."
4) The winner of the 80's Ladies Rankdown Reba McEntire is competing yet again for the throne of 90's Ladies. Will she be able to win again? ~anything is possible~
5) Which one of the two sisters featured (Shelby Lynne and Allison Moorer) will place higher?
6) Of the three singer-songwriters showcased (Kim Richey, Matraca Berg, Gretchen Peters) who will place highest and lowest? Hoping for Matraca Berg because "Train Don't Run" is a BOP
7) Were there any discoveries from the 90's that you really liked? "Outbound Plane" was really cute!
8) Who is your favorite 90's Lady of Country and why? Shania Twain is a pop-country idol who smashed through glass ceilings in the 90s. Alison Krauss has one of the most incredible voices I've ever heard. Faith Hill is a classy queen and has some of the catchiest songs in country music. Patty Loveless is an underrated icon. LeAnn Rimes is another favorite, because she can sing pretty much any genre. I can't get enough Dixie Chicks. SHeDAISY had no business not being a huge pop act.

1) What will be #1 and what other songs will be Top 5 contenders? I think the top 5 contenders will be "Wide Open Spaces", "Strawberry Wine", "Whatever You Say", "No Place That Far", and "Stand Beside Me". Maaaaaaaaaybe "Fancy" has a shot, but I'm honestly not as sure about it as most people seem to be. Sara's song seems to have been neglected in these predictions so far, and I'd just like to remind everyone that she is basically always a top 5 contender when the songs are really good, and this song IS nothing short of phenomenal! I think Dixie Chicks will likely pull off the win, but Deana will put up a hell of a fight with her career song.
2) What will be #51 and what other songs will round out the Bottom 5? No idea... I honestly couldn't even find 5 of these songs to dislike. The ones that aren't on Spotify/Apple Music are probably going to suffer. As will songs by artists that many people had never even heard of before. I just hope that "Girls With Guitars" is towards the bottom, as that's the only one I can think of that left me totally underwhelmed.
3) Only three songs held the #1 position at one point in time or another. What were those three songs? "Wide Open Spaces", "Strawberry Wine", and maybe "Fancy".
4) The winner of the 80's Ladies Rankdown Reba McEntire is competing yet again for the throne of 90's Ladies. Will she be able to win again? It's possible, but I am certainly not rooting for her this time. "Fancy", as iconic as it is, is also incredibly overrated. Several songs in this list are better songs, even if that one is one of the most widely-known songs of the list. Plus the competition in this list is much stronger than that of '80s Ladies, so that won't help matters. Again, she could still win, and I would welcome it because I love Reba! But there are at least 30 songs from her own '90s hits catalog that I would have preferred to see in this over "Fancy".
5) Which one of the two sisters featured (Shelby Lynne and Allison Moorer) will place higher? Don't know, don't care. (Jk, maybe Allison? Neither song was particularly memorable, imo...)
6) Of the three singer-songwriters showcased (Kim Richey, Matraca Berg, Gretchen Peters) who will place highest and lowest? Highest, Kim Richey. Lowest, Matraca. Gretchen's song was by far the best of the 3, but I know from Martina's debut album rankdown that "When You Are Old" is likely to be a pretty polarizing song! I would love to see that one be the highest of the 3 though. Gretchen is such an insanely talented songwriter!
7) Were there any discoveries from the 90's that you really liked? Even though I could see it leaving in the bottom 5 here, Bobbie Cryner's song was probably my favorite discovery here. The lyrics to "You'd Think He'd Know Me Better" were so well-crafted! I also liked "Take It Like A Man" and "Now I Know" quite a bit. However, in general, when I was listening to this list I thought it was pretty apparent why the songs I already know have been the ones that have held up over time versus the ones that have faded into obscurity. I enjoyed pretty much everything here a lot, but none of the new discoveries even came close to matching the iconic greatness of songs like "When You Say Nothing At All".
8) Who is your favorite 90's Lady of Country and why? Lmao I'll give you one guess...

So to answer that last question seriously, Martina is my favorite '90s lady, as I am sure everybody has gathered by now. For me, it honestly comes down to the voice. Artists' voices can be so variable in so many different ways. Voices can be powerful or weak. Emotive or stagnant. Smooth or rough. Twangy or not. Higher or lower. Large-ranged versus narrow-ranged. Able to nail one style really well, or able to nail literally anything. Some are immediately identifiable, some don't have a clear identity. And it goes even deeper, into things such as whether an artist is able to enunciate clearly, whether their performance is consistent in a live setting, whether their songs choices are good or not, or even whether they are just plain good people that I want to support.
For me, Martina is the one who checks the most boxes. She has an extremely powerful voice, but her vocal tone is also so warm, and pleasant, and just plain consistent. I never find her to be overbearing when she belts, unlike some of her peers who have a rougher edge to their voice. Plus she is equally strong in her low-range, mid-range, and high-range. She is able to sustain notes longer than anybody else in the business. She is certainly not like Reba or Jo Dee Messina with their ability to ooze charisma regardless of the song, but she is definitely a skilled enough interpreter to be able to pull off just about any song she wants to. She is undeniably rooted in country, and has always stayed closer to her roots than many of her peers from the same era. Yet she is not really twangy, so I can usually still listen to her around my friends who hate country. She doesn't have the largest range in the world, but she does know how to use it very well; and when she does push her range, she can stay at the top of her range without wearing out, which is why she is one of the best power-ballad deliverers in the business. She is also somebody I can understand at least 98% of the words she is singing, which is way more than can be said about most people. Not to mention that her live performances are famous for improving on the studio versions, and her band is SO freaking good, and many of her songs have held up well production-wise over time, and finally she is just plain one of the best role models to have ever graced the celebrity world.
I know that some would not agree about her tone being consistently pleasant, because she gets a lot of flack for belting too much... But for me she sounds way more consistent than most of her peers. Many people don't like her song choices, and while I agree her late-career quality dropped off a bit, for me it doesn't matter too much because she still sounds incredible. A "bad" song for Martina is basically just "bad" because it's not something that Ten Pound Hammer can relate to, or could be seen as a bit boring; she's never released anything actively terrible such as "You Broke Up With Me" or "Sun Daze"
To sum up my thoughts on the matter, Reba McEntire once said that Martina has the voice that she and everybody else wishes they had. Coming from the Queen herself, that is just about the highest compliment an artist could receive
