As predicted by most of you "A Soft Place to Fall" leaves in the bottom 5 and yours truly loses his first Top 30 right out of the gate while Kanenrá:ke and Troublemaker lose a Top 20. I have long had a soft spot for this song as I've always loved the movie The Horse Whisperer that it was featured in, however most of you couldn't find that same love in your heart. The song went on to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1999 where Allison also performed the song during the Oscars ceremony. On a side note...if you're a Hays Carll fan you'll want to check out his upcoming album as Allison Moorer co-produced it!

The oldest sister of Alison Moorer immediately leaves the rankdown next as Shelby's 1993 single "Feelin' Kind of Lonely Tonight" went on to receive little fanfare (it's also not featured on Spotify or Apple Music which may have attributed to its lower ranking). This song went on to be the least polarizing song of the rankdown, however!
Shelby went on to have success outside of the country genre and with the release of her pop rock album I Am Shelby Lynne saw her achieve greater success which led to her winning the Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 2001.

Mandy Barnett’s “Now That’s All Right With Me” becomes the final song to leave the Bottom 5 which see’s our first Top 10 loss from gardyfan while three others lose a bottom 5 ranking. This song received about as much support as I could expect it to and it’s long been a favorite of mine. Mandy released her self-titled debut album on Asylum Records in 1996 and it’s one that I had on repeat growing up. Unfortunately radio never warmed up to her much and this song went on to be her highest charting single at #43.

Our next song to leave came in as the third most polarizing song of the rankdown that see’s three Top 10 loses for kansasmeetsmo , Troublemaker and Kanenrá:ke while .indulgecountry loses his #51. In all honesty I never cared much for this song back when I remember seeing it on CMT, however the song resonated completely differently with me now and going into this I thought it would end up in my bottom 5 but it managed to make it all the way into my top 25. As bboat11 mentioned the song is so well-crafted and this also went on to become one of my favorite re-discoveries for this rankdown.

Encore!
Allison Moorer & Shelby Lynne "The Color of a Cloudy Day" Since they are the only sisters showcased in the rankdown I decided to select a song from their most recent duet album Not Dark Yet. The song was written by Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires.
Gretchen Peters "Arguing With Ghosts" Highlighted from Gretchen's amazing discography is my favorite song from her critically acclaimed album Dancing with the Beast released in early 2018.
Kelly Willis "Heaven's Just a Sin Away" I almost selected this song as it's one I remember seeing on CMT quite a bit back when it was released in 1993. This is from Kelly's third self-titled album released on MCA Records and is a cover of a song made famous by The Kendalls in 1977.
Mandy Barnett "The Whispering Wind" Selected from Mandy's early discography is the second single from her 1999 album I've Got a Right to Cry.
Bobbie Cryner "I Didn't Know My Own Strength" This was the final single from her sophomore album Girl of Your Dreams but unfortunately failed to chart.

I didn't know before this rankdown that "You'd Think He'd Know Me Better" had been sung by someone else other than Lorrie Morgan. Honestly, I would've ranked it quite a bit higher if it was Morgan's version, since I didn't care for Cryner's voice.

I did want to come back around and comment on Gretchen Peters as she's the first singer-songwriter to exit and unfortunately for some of us leaves all too soon as "When You Are Old" garnered two Top 20 rankings as well as three Top 30 rankings. This was the first single selected from Gretchen’s 1996 album The Secret of Life which included songs that went on to become hits for Faith Hill, Martina McBride (“Independence Day”), and Trisha Yearwood (“On a Bus to St. Cloud”). Martina also covered "When You Are Old" on her debut record as well as the song “This Uncivil War” from her album Emotion (and it most recently ranked in at #3 for bboat11 ’s album series!). Alright y’all as I mentioned in a previous post I’ve had quite a long day (and thanks for bearing with me through the initial hiccup!) but I really wanted to get this going for everyone. Here's a quick recap: Bottom 5:51. "A Soft Place to Fall" - Allison Morrer 50. "Feelin' Kind of Lonely Tonight" - Shelby Lynne 49. "When You Are Old" - Gretchen Peters 48. "Baby Take a Piece of My Heart" - Kelly Willis 47. "Now That's All Right With Me" - Mandy Barnett 46. "You'd Think He'd Know Me Better" - Bobbie Cryner I'll be back this weekend to get us to into the Top 40!

Yay, I didn’t start off as badly as I thought I might. 😂 Shelby’s record was fun and I may have over ranked Kelly’s record a bit but I enjoyed it.

It's a shame Bobbie Cryner never made it to top 50, "Daddy Laid the Blues on Me" and "You'd Think He'd Know Me Better" will always be among my favorites of hers

I’m partial to Lorrie Morgan’s version (which was a single for her in 1998), but I really like “You Think He’d Know Me Better”. It has such great lyrics.

So Lorrie and Bobbie both sang versions of "You Think He’d Know Me Better" and "I Didn't Know My Own Strength"? Because I'm getting confused, lol.

Lol I knew including that song as an encore would cause some to scratch their heads...but no Lorrie covered and released “You’d Think He’d Know Me Better” which was on her 1997 album Shakin’ Things Up. Bobbie’s “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength” is similar in title only.

Gretchen Peters deserved better but of course it was tanked by people who cannot handle anything that is slow. All the rest I expected to be out early, though I really did not expect to see Allison Moorer out first, I thought people would like that one. I've never been able to get into it myself so glad to see it leave early.

Wow I'm gutted with that bottom 5 lol
Allison's always been this severely underrated gem of an artist and I can't believe she came in last. Being near the bottom sure I get that since she wasn't ever big in the mainstream but I was hoping for her to last a bit longer.
Her sister being near the bottom doesn't surprise me either, she's never been well known for her early country material, even I preferred her sister's country output more.
I think if a different Gretchen song were picked she may have lasted a bit longer but lack of familiarity did this one in the most I think.
Kelly like Allison is one of the most slept on artists from the 90's. Her voice is such a beautiful country voice and she had a wonderful run of albums from the 90's-early 2000's. Her album from last year was great as well!
Mandy's sound was always a little older than her contemporaries which I think is why she didn't hit it big, which is a shame as her voice is such a classic sounding one that I would've loved to hear tackle more material. Luckily she has continued to release projects every now and then.
And Bobbie is such a great songwriter and vocalist. "You'd Think He'd Know Me Better" is one of the best singles of the 90's imo and I'm just glad you all had to listen to it even if it wasn't received as well as I'd hoped lol

Our next reveal is Mila Mason’s “Dark Horse” which was released as the second single from her debut album That’s Enough of That. This song was actually first recorded by Canadian pop single Amanda Marshall and was released as the fifth single from her 1995 self-titled album. Both .indulgecountry and sabre14 lose a Top 15 while two others lose their bottom ranking. While this song was able to garner five Top 30 rankings, the lower rankings in the mid to upper 40’s kept this song hanging close to the Bottom 5 for a period of time before finally settling in at #45.

We say goodbye to our second singer-songwriter Kim Richey as her 1995 single “Just My Luck” leaves just inside the Top 45. austin loses a Top 20 while six others lose a Top 30. This song received one lone Bottom 5 ranking from Cody Wants Out... who also just finished wrapping up his Brooks & Dunn rankdown which featured the Kim Rickey co-write “Every River”. This was another one of my favorite re-discoveries and I had almost all but forgotten about this song even though I do remember seeing it quite a bit on CMT growing up. Kim is still recording music today and just last year released her ninth studio album Edgeland. Kim’s presence remains in the rankdown as she is a co-writer for Mindy McCready’s Top 20 hit “You’ll Never Know”.
