Billboard 200 Chart Moves: 'Moana' Soundtrack Surpasses 1 Million Copies Sold in U.S.

It's just the third soundtrack released in the past four years to reach the million-sales milestone.

On the latest Billboard 200 albums chart (dated Aug. 25), Travis Scott’s Astroworld held firm at No. 1 for a second week, earning 205,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Aug. 16, according to Nielsen Music. It blew in atop the list the previous week with 537,000 units earned – the second-largest week of 2018 for an album.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the week’s most popular albums based on their overall consumption. That overall unit figure combines pure album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).

Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the rest of the Billboard 200:

— Soundtrack, Moana – No. 62 — The soundtrack album to Moana reaches a sales milestone: it has now surpassed 1 million copies sold in the U.S. The set, which moves 59-62 on the chart in its 91st consecutive week on the tally, sold 2,000 copies in the latest tracking week, bringing its total sales sum to 1.001 million.

Only eight albums released in the past two years (dating back to August of 2016) have sold a million copies in the U.S. No albums released in 2018 have cleared a million yet. The last-released album to reach a million sold was the soundtrack to The Greatest Showman. It was released on Dec. 8, 2017, and has sold 1.252 million.

Notably, Moana is also only the third soundtrack released in the past four years to clear 1 million sold, following Showman and Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1 (2.191 million).

— Panic! at the Disco, Death of a Bachelor – No. 94 — Sale pricing of the set at digital retailers helps pump a 36 percent sales gain, as it rises to 3,000 sold for the week. In terms of overall units, it jumps 13 percent to 8,000 units. The former No. 1 has yet to leave that chart after 135 weeks.

— Tyler, The Creator, Flower Boy – No. 117 — The album gets an 18 percent boost in units (to 6,000) mostly owed to streaming activity. Interest in the set was perhaps driven by its new music video for the album’s song “See You Again.”

— Dave Grohl, Play – No. 124 — Dave Grohl’s 22-minute, single-track concept album Play bows at No. 124, earning 6,000 equivalent album units. The instrumental set also doubles as the soundtrack to the mini-documentary of the same name. Grohl plays all the instruments on the album, which will be released on vinyl on Sept. 28. The set is currently only charting from digital album sales and streaming activity.

Play also bows at No. 6 on Hard Rock Albums, No. 10 on Alternative Albums and No. 15 on Top Album Sales (6,000 sold).
