When you go from a huge era, or an era that shows the promise of a long and eventful career and then the follow up is a complete disaster that literally ends you
Can you think of artists whose careers have derailed in the most spectacular way?

Fifth Harmony Meagan Trainor Nelly Furtado^ Nicki Minaj* Sam Smith
^Note: Nelly did go and do a Spanish language album after the massive Loose and that time away was really long and then the new album after that was just not what she needed at that time to be huge.
*Note: Nicki did have several top 10s off of the album already and also "Fefe" from Tekashi's record and that's nothing to sneeze at. But, with the type of hype and stuff for the album era and then all of the recent messiness for the rollout, it seems her team is more responsible for the poor performance than she is.

Iggy Azalea and maaaaaybe Katy Perry are the two best examples in here imo (just going from size of one album era to the next as opposed to a slower downfall). But Katy has American Idol so if we try to factor that in...

No mention of Fetty Wap??? Is one album and a handful of hit singles contained within a year or two considered a career?

No mention of Fetty Wap??? Is one album and a handful of hit singles contained within a year or two considered a career? I'm agreeing on Fetty. Even though his high was pretty short lived, he was too massive during that period for me to think he wouldn't apply here. He imploded spectacularly (and I'm sad about that too tbh).

Robin Thicke Blurred Lines to Paula Without a doubt, the best example of the last 20 years. GaGa, JT and Katy had all long established their legacies by the time their disastrous eras happened, and their successes will be remembered long after their missteps are forgotten. Robin went from having one of the biggest hits in music history to laughingstock in 12 months.

Sinead O'connor- she already had one somewhat successful album when she released "Nothing Compares To You" which exploded. She then ripped up a picture of the pope on SNL calling him/religion the real enemy never to be heard from again. (well barely). I'm not sure if that's what you meant though.
Vanilla Ice- Went from a num.1 7X's Platinum album to a non charting one. I believe he had a sdtk in between his first and second that produced a single that reached num.81. I can't imagine the sdtk did much better. His live album also reached num.30 that was before his 2nd studio album.

I don't think Fetty had a second album yet. Several mixtapes and EPs, but no album.
My answer would be Mindy McCready. She went from promising artist to "Where are they now?" thanks to two album flops from two different companies.

Having one successful era and then disappearing ins't an implosion. To implode, you have to have done something that makes everybody suddenly hate you. Sinead O'Connor's career imploded after SNL. Iggy's career imploded because she has a horrible personality and was a culture vulture that was exploiting black art. Alessia Cara is (thus far) a one album wonder. Nobody hates her, they just don't want to listen to her anymore.

The Chainsmokers.
They went from 61 straight weeks in the top10 and one of the biggest singles of all time to barely being able chart outside of the top40
