Steppin' Out Joe Jackson
Total Points: 1636
Billboard Hot 100: 6
Billboard Top 100 of 1983: 82
From: Night And Day
Inspired by his time living in New York City, this was released as the second single from the album Night And Day. It reached the Top 10 on the Hot 100, Mainstream Rock and Adult Contemporary charts.
Losing a No. 1 with this leaving the rankdown, sorry singingrulebritannia and a further 3 of you lose a Top 5...this one just couldn't make up for the large number of low rankings it got.
I never really knew what he looked like until now. I always envisioned him to be someone with longer, mullet hair. I don't know why.lol

My mom loves I Know There's Something Going On but I used to hate it because I thought it was so repetitive. Listen through it for this rankdown WITHOUT my mother singing along made me really like it though.

Tied for the greatest thing Phil Collins ever did along with Land of Confusion.

I heard magic in the Frida song when I re-listened to it for this rankdown, and would've ranked it #5.

- Whoaaaa. Definitely thought Gloria was a solid top 10 contender. But HAISTLWY’s early exit probably suggests youse aren’t too hot on the late great Miss Branigan.
- Completely overlooked that Back on the Chain Gang was on the King of Comedy soundtrack. What a painfully good movie.
- Didn’t think She’s a Beauty would make it far but it’s such a standout for this year. Its parent album, Outside Inside, is like if David Foster produced a Wall of Voodoo album. To that point, Mexican Radio, another 1983 single release, would be an easy top 5 placement for me.
- Ugh, Overkill. You had so much life left in you.
- God You’re supposed to be my friend! My fff—my friend! My soulmate! My sister!

“Gloria” and “Overkill” deserved so much better! Two definite classics.

#40. She's A Beauty - The Tubes Surprised but very glad this one made the top 40 here. One thing I hardly pay attention to now a days are song lyrics, but back in the 80's, the songs really told a story. I love the coming of age story of the boy at the Circus. The circus was also the first place I saw scantily clad woman. As you can guess this ends up super high on my list as well all the way at #19. #39. Overkill - Men At Work This band was hard at work dishing out hit after hit. I'm glad "Down Under" comes in the highest. One of my favorite Australian acts. Up there with AC/DC, Rick Springfield, and Olivia Newton-John. #38. Der Kommissar - After The Fire This is one of those songs I like more and more each year. Last year I might have slotted it in the 50's, this year 30's and maybe in the 20's by next year. His unique vocal style is what does the trick each year. "Ja ja" #37. Steppin' Out - Joe Jackson (HOT 100 #6) (DOC #25)This is the Joe Jackson song I enjoyed the most. The combination of Jazzy pianos with 80's New Wave style really hit the mark. This was a hit in my charts, but didn't make my top 100 of 1982. #36. Promises, Promises - Naked Eyes While still filed under New Wave, Naked Eyes were more of a Sophistipop sound. I actually liked this one better than "Always Something There To Remimd Me" because of its originality. #35. I Know There's Something Going On - Frida Another great 80's songs. This one also got heavy airplay on the rack radio formats. How does a song that stalled at #13 make it onto the top 20 songs of the year? Probably had to do with spending 29 weeks on the Hot 100. #34. Our House - Madness First I have never seen that particular sleeve art for the single, so I had to grab it. This is such a fun song. The English 80's bands knew how to make long lasting party songs. #33. Back On The Chain Gang - The Pretenders Pretenders had so many great hit prior to this one. This is a good song, but if I was to compile a Pretenders' top 10, this one would end up right outside. #32. Too Shy - Kajagoogoo This is one of my favorite songs of all time, and it still missed my top 10 by a hair. The intro build up is incredible and made it sound very unique to other songs of its time. That's how versatile 1983 was. I charted 3 Kajagoogoo songs in 1983 and 2 more in 1984. Including Limah's solo material. #31. Gloria - Laura BraniganThis would be my favorite Gloria Branigan song. I gave it a few weeks at #35 in my personal top 40. It was a bit too simple with the melody always staying in the same key, but it was still a decent pop song. Another huge turn out from my own personal charts. Six of these were big top 10 hits on my personal chart. Here are the songs final top 100 rankings. I'll update a few more Doc Indie Party Rock only charting songs later tonight. 205. Laura Branigan - Gloria (HOT 100 #20) (DOC #35)143. Frida - I Know There's Something Going On (HOT 100 #13) (DOC #23)117. The Pretenders - Back On The Chain Gang (Hot 100 #5) (DOC #19)
47. After The Fire - Der Kommissar (HOT 100 #5) (DOC #5)43. Men At Work - Overkill (HOT 100 #3) (DOC #3)37. Naked Eyes - Promises, Promises (HOT 100 #11) (DOC #3)21. Madness - Our House (HOT 100 #7) (DOC #4)19. The Tubes - She's A Beauty (HOT 100 #10) (DOC #2)
18. Kajagoogoo - Too Shy (HOT 100 #5) (DOC #2)

Mickey Toni Basil
Total Points: 1391
Billboard Hot 100: 1(1)
Billboard Top 100 of 1983: 36
From: Word Of Mouth
Originally released in 1981 as a single in the UK, this eventually made its way over the Atlantic in August of 1982 and peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 the week ending December 11, 1982.
Starting off the day good for some, bad for some others...

In the debate over nature versus nurture, I believe that nurture has to have some degree of influence. Why? Because the music video for this song got me hooked on cheerleaders at a very young age and set my subconscious mind in motion to become the legs-and-ass fiend that I am today.

I'll Tumble 4 Ya Culture Club
Total Points: 1414
Billboard Hot 100: 9
Billboard Top 100 of 1983: 77
From: Kissing to Be Clever
Released only in North America and Australia, this continued the groups streak of Top 10's in the US, peaking at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 the week ending August 27, 1983 where it stayed for two weeks. This made Culture Club the first band to have 3 Top 10 singles from a debut album since the Beatles.
I lose my first Top 20 and a few others join me in my misery...

Sorry, the bass line annoys me in this song.

Electric Avenue Eddy Grant
Total Points: 1443
Billboard Hot 100: 2(5)
Billboard Top 100 of 1983: 22
From: Killer on the Rampage
Spending 5 weeks at its peak of No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 (behind "Flashdance...What A Feeling" and "Every Breath You Take”), this was originally released in 1982 in the UK.
It was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best R&B Song but lost to Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean".
Still clearing out those No. 100 placements and we see another Top 10 fall with this leaving the rankdown...
craziaskowboi - 8
This song screams "1983" out loud! The chorus is fun to sing along to, and I also get a kick out of that "synthesized lawnmower" sound that appears in different parts of the song.

You Got Lucky Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
Total Points: 1468
Billboard Hot 100: 20
Billboard Top 100 of 1983: 97
From: Long After Dark
First single from the album Long After Dark. It peaked at No. 20 in the US and No. 1 on the Top Rock Tracks chart. It was rarely performed live as it was not one of Petty's favorite songs.
10 Top 40 placements tumble with this leaving the rankdown...

Der Kommissar After The Fire
Total Points: 1633
Billboard Hot 100: 5
Billboard Top 100 of 1983: 30
From: Cargo
Cover of a 1982 song by Falco (who took his version to No. 1 in 6 countries), this was recorded in English by the group After The Fire and released in February of 1983 reaching its peak of No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 the week ending April 30th.
craziaskowboi - 24
They almost never play the full version with the synth interlude before the final chorus on the radio. That's the version I like.

I. LOVE. THIS. SONG. Through the decades, there have been many songs that I loved instantly, the very first time I heard them, and this is the very first song that I can say that about.

Promises, Promises Naked Eyes
Total Points: 1668
Billboard Hot 100: 11
Billboard Top 100 of 1983: 64
From: Burning Bridges
Featuring Madonna on backing vocals on the Jellybean 7" and 12" mixes of the song, this was released in July of 1983 and peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100.
craziaskowboi - 13
I like the uptempo pace of this song, and I also love the precision percussion work. They were able to add several elements of percussion without making it sound cluttered, which is very hard to do. There's so much percussion going on during the second verse in particular, and it all sounds awesome.

I Know There's Something Going On Frida
Total Points: 1672
Billboard Hot 100: 13
Billboard Top 100 of 1983: 20
From: Something's Going On
Huge international hit which reached the Top 40 in 17 countries, this was released in August of 1982, peaking at No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 the week ending March 26, 1983 (its 21st chart week) where it remained for 3 weeks.
Produced by Phil Collins, it was her biggest hit outside of her time with ABBA.
craziaskowboi - 20
Gated reverb. This song has Phil Collins' fingerprints all over it, which is probably how it ended up in my Top 20.
