Our House Madness
Total Points: 1679
Billboard Hot 100: 7
Billboard Top 100 of 1983: 53
From: The Rise & Fall
Peaking at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 on July 23, 1983, this was released as the first single from the album The Rise & Fall. It reached the Top 40 in nearly a dozen countries and has been used in numerous television commercials and other media since its release.
Those Top 10's keep dropping like flies...
craziaskowboi - 48
I would have ranked this higher if I wasn't burnt out on it.

Too Shy Kajagoogoo
Total Points: 1707
Billboard Hot 100: 5
Billboard Top 100 of 1983: 50
From: White Feathers
Aided by high-rotation on MTV, "Too Shy" reached a peak of No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 the week ending July 9, 1983. It was a major international hit, reaching the Top 40 in over 15 countries.
After being fired from the group, lead singer Lamal would move onto solo work, most notably "The Never Ending Story" which came in 1984.
Duran Duran keyboardists Nick Rhodes and Colin Thurston produced the song.

I have a vivid random memory of this song during a family road trip back in the 1990s. It was a Sunday evening on Labor Day weekend in 1995, and my family was on its way back home from a road trip to Missouri. As we traveled on I-24 eastbound from Kentucky into Tennessee, we tuned into the Top 40 station in Nashville (formerly WYHY, currently WRVW, 107.5 FM), which had an all-'80s show going for a few hours that evening. The sun was setting by the time we passed Clarksville, and the sky faded into evening twilight as we zigzagged our way through the jagged Highland Rim toward the city of Nashville. During this time, "Too Shy" came on the radio, and the uneasy sound of the song fit the fading twilight perfectly as I watched all the headlights on the westbound vehicles shoot by. Ever since then, I think of sunset and evening twilight every time I hear this song.

- Whoaaaa. Definitely thought Gloria was a solid top 10 contender. But HAISTLWYโs early exit probably suggests youse arenโt too hot on the late great Miss Branigan.
- Didnโt think Sheโs a Beauty would make it far but itโs such a standout for this year. Its parent album, Outside Inside, is like if David Foster produced a Wall of Voodoo album. To that point, Mexican Radio, another 1983 single release, would be an easy top 5 placement for me.
"Self Control" is my favorite Laura Branigan song of all, and I ranked it #2 in the 1984 rankdown. "Mexican Radio" would be firmly in my Top 20 if it was included in this rankdown.

Look, after "Breaking Us in Two" went out so early, I was expecting "Steppin' Out" to go out much earlier than this. Honestly, I thought it would be my second top ten loss, not my first. The song in my top ten that I expected to lose first knows what it is.
I'm actually more bitter about "Overkill". That song is great. What are you bottom rankers doing?!

I think I love every single song that has been revealed in this top 50 so far...sadly I think that means a couple of clunkers await in the next round of reveals

Um, what's The Safety Dance still doing here Edition:
40. She's a Beauty---Solid rock song. Almost feel like I've heard this in commercials?
39. Overkill---Yeah, those Men at Work songs are going in the right order. Although this could have shown up about 15 spots or so sooner.
38. Der Kommissar---Um, if I have to go with a foreign pop song from the 1980s, I'm going with Rock Me Amadeus every time. This was alright, but eh.
37. Steppin' Out---It's decent for being an AC song, but that only goes so far with me. I do like the mix of jazz and pop, it has an airy feel.
36. Promises Promises---I forgot about Naked Eyes when it came to artists with more than one good song in 1983. Thankfully, they went in the right order, but I'm A-OK with this placement.
35. I Know There's Something Going On---Had no idea this was one of the women from ABBA! I'm glad at least Ky had some good news knowing one of his songs didn't get tanked. It was one of those that I didn't recognized the title, but I remembered the music.
34. Our House---Oof. My second top 10 falls (and surprisingly, neither one was the one I'd thought would go first!). The writing is crisp and superb, the singing is memorable and on point. Will agree with Doc that it's a ton of fun as well. How did Daniel beat me?
33. Back on the Chain Gang---Chrissie Hynde is on point as per usual, but while the sound effects in Allentown added to its song, the effects here detracted a bit. But still a solid pop song that just fell outside my top 10.
32. Too Shy---Even as a kid, I don't think I ever got into this one for some reason. Maybe it was the hair? Dunno, but although it was an OK listen here, it never broke out of my bottom half.
31. Gloria---Easily her best song outside of Self Control, I do wish this waited another day to reveal itself. It's used to great effect in 2013's Gloria from Chile where an older woman learned about life and love.

I thought Science would have been top 30.
Twilight Zone is great, it started in my top 20 and just kept tumbling from there like rankdown casualty.
I love Gloria, Laura's voice was amazing, sigh. It was in the film Flashdance but it wasnโt included on the soundtrack. I hope to not see a certain song included on that sdtk for a while yet.

I Know There's Something Going On Frida
Not exactly the type of sound you'd expect as a lead solo single by a chanteuse whose band created some of the best pop classics in music history. It was refreshing. Glad she made it this far with the Russ Ballard tune. Coincidentally, Russ penned another track that also peaked in 1983, which Frida's former band-mate took to the Top 30 in the US.

Few more Doc Indie Party Rock missing numbers on this update. Up next? My top 40 of 1983. 50. ? 49. Huey Lewis & News - Heart And Soul (HOT 100 #8) (DOC #4)This is the first song from 'Sports' I charted. It easily made my top 50, but somehow misses Billboards 1983 top 100, even after reaching #8. 48. ? 47. After The Fire - Der Kommissar46. Neil Schon and Jan Hammer - No More Lies (DOC #5)Years before Jan Hammer released the "Miami Vice Theme", he teamed up with Journey's Neil Schon on this rocker. Neil did guitars and vocals, while Jan played drums and those cool Guitar held Synthesizers . This was another song I flipped for after viewing it on MTV and another Doc Indie Party Rock only charting song.. 45. ? 44. Culture Club - Do You Really Want To Hurt Me43. Men At Work - Overkill42. The Fixx - One Thing Leads To Another (HOT 100 #4) (DOC #4)Can't recall if the song got shut out of the 1983 year end chart or was taken into account in 1984. Either way, both HOT 100 and I peaked it at #4. This is also my highest charting Fixx song. 41. Peter Gabriel - Shock The Monkey (HOT 100 #25) (DOC #5)Another Favorite among the 1982-83 New wave charts was this song. This was the first Peter Gabriel song I recall hearing on the radio. I remember instantly loving that Japanese like synth hook.

SW is my #95, not #59.
I've tried to like it, but it's just made me dislike it more ยฏ\_(ใ)_/ยฏ. I think I underranked Faithfully though.

One of my favorite 80โs songs growing up, โThe Safety Danceโ remains a fun listen. Glad to see that it made it so far.

Bite your tongue. One of the BEST ever made! Oh don't get me wrong, I agree, that wall-keyboard alone makes it iconic! I've just seen it on a lot of "worst-of" lists...
I've even professed my love for it here.
